Feeding Schedule I'm wanting to get Gidget on a regular meal schedule. Up until now, she's been "grazing" all day long. I'd like to get her on a morning and evening meal schedule. What is the latest you feed the evening meal. Do you give any kind of treat at bedtime. |
I feed mine twice a day mostly between 5 am - 8 am in the morning based on when I go to work and in the evening around 6 pm. However if I am home they want to eat earlier no later than 5 pm. They love their routine and know when to wake me up when it is feeding time. The hardest part is when the clocks change because they don't know the time difference. |
Mike eats 3 times on schedule, dinner is around 8 pm and I save few pieces of kibble to give him before bed. If I don't give it he wakes up earlier for food. I think schedule is great for appetite stimulation. |
I'm a big fan of free feeding. I have at least 2 that are pickers and would never eat enough if I tried to limit it to certain times a day. I'm sure its possible but just not something I'm into. I kinda liken it to if I'm hungry between meals I can go get a snack but they can't. Also I think Penny was not given much food when she was with her previous owners so she kinda goes into a panic if there is not food. |

Cody eats at 6AM and 4PM, at 8PM he gets a treat after he has gone through all his commands and tricks. I do this because all commands and tricks are not used everyday, to keep everything fresh in his brain we go through it all nightly. Schedules with dogs are the best way to go and dogs like routines ;) |

My first Yorkie was a grazer and it worked fine for him; however, he didn't go with me everywhere I went during the day. Gidget does so her grazing doesn't usually start until 2 or 3:00 in the afternoon. Sometimes, I leave the house around 1:00 and don't get back until 6 or 7:00, which means she hasn't had anything to eat since the night before. Don't like that idea at all. So, I put her food out this morning (1/2 her daily amount). She finally ate it around 3:00. Put the other 1/2 out and will take it up at 8:00 even if she hasn't eaten it all. Will be rough for a couple of days but she'll soon learn to eat the food when it's out because it might not be there later. |

Yes, Yorkies are stubborn but they'll eat dirt before they will starve. |

I feed mine three times a day. 7:30am 12:30pm and 6:30pm. I wished I could just leave a bowl of food out but she would gobble it down. If she got into a bag of food she would pig out , she loves her food. Susan |
Twice a day, at vet's insistence. Sometimes, I sneak Fabian some chicken or blueberries at lunch because otherwise he's ravenous by the time I get home from work at the end of the day. No matter the quantity put out, he eats like he's just breaking a month-long fast, so grazing doesn't work for us either. |
