CMCANULTY, I hope you reconsider the electric fence. Gidget is always on a leash when we're outside PERIOD. These little ones have a mind of their own even when trained to "come". Instinct pops in and off they go chasing something. The electric fence will keep them inside the yard area but the danger comes from critters who can get inside the electric fence. Please reconsider and just walk and have outside with leash. They are so little and so vulnerable. |
To make this perfectly clear.....I would NEVER have a wireless fence but...if I did, Cody would take the bolt of electric shot if he saw a critter including dog, bears, deer, matters not he would be outside the wireless area. Terriers were originally bred to hunt, this instinct can never be bred out of them, many terriers will take the hit to chase after anything. But we are not talking just about terriers, any breed, any size should not be contained with-in a wireless fence. To much danger lurks outside the wireless fence area. A dog cannot miss what they never had. If they are leash walked only that's all they know and are happy with that and yes, snow, sleet, rain or shine if they are outdoor trained, and leash walked you take them out regardless of the weather. Before moving to Pennsylvania and buying my own home, I lived in NY, The Bronx, I had had dogs for 30 years, at one time I had a pack of 3 all my dogs were house broken, I leashed walked them in all types of weather, snow, hail, sleet, rain, out we went, dogs had raincoats and warm coats. They never knew the freedom of off leash running until we started camping. So to reiterate this thread never put a dog of any size or breed in a wireless fence. No matter how big or how small the area is, if another animal gets in there will be no time to get to your dog to save it. |
OK I see it wouldn't be a good thing for my Denny, thanks to everyone https://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/mo...r-marker-1.png |

For example, then its even safer to put my dogs in crates in a windowless room with the door bolted!!! Wouldnt that make them even safer? They couldnt escape or be stolen or fall or get stepped on etc. But safety isnt the only thing a doggie wants and needs and life is a trade off between risk and safety and life!! (I know this is a silly example but the point is the same) It is a balence! I respectg how you draw the balence for you and your dogs. |

My dog runs free in my fenced in yard with me there watching him, he is never left unattended and he is not a wee little 5 pounder. I take all measures in keeping him safe, if anything happened to him due to my negligence I would never be able to forgive myself, my choice. We all have choices and we have to live with the choice we make. |
