How cold is to cold to walk How cold will you take your fur kids out for a walk? |
First of all, I'm not a fan of cold weather but our little ones need to do outside to do their business. However, Gidget does have a pee pad that she uses when it's impossible to go outside (she doesn't like it though). As long as it's not raining, sleeting or snowing I try to get her outside at least once a day. Our winters aren't usually that cold (seldom gets below 32 during the day). I just bundle us up in a sweater for her and a jacket, hat and gloves for me and take her out even if it's just for a short time. |
I was taking Dexter for half hour walks. I just want to make sure it’s not too cold for him. I don’t know if I’d want to walk him below 32’ |
When I had my pack of 3 they had to be walked every day, they were house broken and would not use indoor pads. Rain, hail, sleet, snow, they were walked. Make sure you put a sweater or coat on Dexter to keep him warm on these walks. If he is pad trained or yard trained there is no reason you should walk him in temps of 32. I had no choice with my girls, no matter how cold it was they had to be walked, they just pottied faster and didn't smell everything in sight lol. |
I worked out in the basement and after I got done Dexter let me know he wanted to go. It was 39 and we just walked to the park and not around it. |
Temp of 39 even for a 10 minuet walk he should have a sweater on. I'm sure you know yorkies do not have under coats therefore they get cold faster then dogs that do. |
Depends on the dog. You can bundle them up. Jackson prefers walking in the cold honestly. As long as it's not like anything below around 25/30 degrees, we will walk. |
First I had to look up what the conversion of Fahrenheit to Celsius. 35 sounded so warm compared to 1. We've taken ours out in minus -1 to -3 which would be 30.2 to 26.6. But they are big Yorkies are wearing coats and one of them mostly rides the mobility scooter, while the other runs. Caleb won't get out of the mobility scooter, (he'll cuddle to my leg) if anything is falling from the sky, rain, hail, snow.. Pip goes a little stir crazy when she can't get out, even though they use a treadmill when we don't go out. She wants to run every day. It gets a lot colder in the states than here, so you must deal with dogs indoor more than us. How do they do when stuck in for long periods? |
My boy does ok up to 8 hours in the house. I think I’ll hold off on the walks if they get colder then the mid 30’s |
1 Attachment(s) This is what Dexter needs for longer winter walks, which may actually be shorter walks lol, I call it the statue suit, my kid doesn't move when he has on lol |
He’s not going to let me put something like that on him |

Dexter has me follow him to his leash and make me walk him. It’s his daily routine |
lol, he has you trained perfectly. |
Lol You have no idea |
Love the statue suit😆 My Cali is not too fond of extreme cold and doesn’t spend much time out in it. She was a show dog when I got her and didn’t know what outdoors and grass was! Now she loves her little yard and chasing squirrels. Still comes in to use her pad though. |

I never catered to my son as I did with my passed girls and now my rescued boy lol. |
Dexter gets to whining for me to take him for a walk now that it’s a pattern |
Any dog, once you start something they expect it all the time. I tell anyone, never start something new that you cannot commit to every day. These yorkies are relentless, they will whine, whimper, bark, make the strangest sounds or stare at you forever until they get what the want lol. How can they be ignored lol :) |
I love it when he talks to me lol |
I have a talker here too, one of the many reasons I just love the yorkie breed, my girls didn't talk as much as this guy does lol. |
Pretty funny isn’t it to hear them try and talk to us |
This guy sometimes makes sounds like a whale and porpoise lol, I ask him if he's singing to momma lol, he also howls in his sleep lol. I never know what will come out of his mouth next lol. It's funny and so cute lol. |
He ever howl in his sleep from a bad dream? |
I never had a yorkie howl while they were sleeping, he is always near me when it happens, I gently stroke his back to let him know he's safe. I don't know if dogs actually do dream, in any case I am always near him, I don't wake him up, just lightly run my hand over his body in case he is having a bad dream. |
If it were left up to Duchess, she would walk in -32 weather :p. She loves being outside and because she doesn't walk (she runs everywhere), I honestly don't think she even gets cold:D. She doesn't stand still long enough to get cold. When the weather is cold, we take short walks and of course she wears her winter coat. I personally don't like cold weather but Duchess insists that I take her out......the things we do. |

:D:D:D:D:DHow adorable. Duchess has a flannel one that is similar to yours. I gotta get a pic of hers. |
I might consider getting something for Dexter to wear. Where would be a good place to purchase a sweater etc. ? |
Pet Supplies, Pet Smart or PetCo, they have nice sweaters and jackets. Cody is a big boy weighing in at 12 pounds, I cannot buy anything on line for him. I take him to one of the above stores and try on before I buy, I hate making special trips to return things. I did however buy the statue one piece sweater for him on line, I had to buy 2 sizes lol and return the one that was to small so there went my free shipping lol. |
