New Puppy/New Member! I have been reading your posts for a week or so, but finally decided to join in! I have my first sweet Yorkie, Hope Joy! She is three months old, and I have had her one month. She is a delight, and we are doing better than I ever expected with the house training. Mostly because I never let her out of my sight😍😍😍. We have always had Cairn Terriers who are very independent, thus my reason for this little angel. My problem: she will not sleep at night. I’m crate training her and the moment I put her in the crate she starts crying, moaning and barking. She might stop for awhile, but begins again. At first I was getting up with her every time and taking her outside. Now I believe it has become a habit. The crate is near me, a foot away😢😢😢. I read on other Yorkie sites to let them cry it out because getting up with them makes them worse? Advice from you all would be appreciated. I’m on my iPad and unable to post pictures yet, but she is beautiful and spoiled! |
Hello and welcome. What I have always done with mine is put them in the crate where they can still see you. Ignore the crying when you first put her in. If she wakes up crying then take her potty and put her right back. Every time she wakes up crying take her potty and back in. Don’t make it cuddle time or play time. Sometimes this can take awhile but she needs to be crate trained for safety purposes and if they need to crated at the vet or groomer or in an emergency. |
New Puppy Thank you for responding Lovetodream! How many times per night seems reasonable? I was taking her three or four times. Down to two, with lots of crying in between. I read on a Yorkie site that waking up becomes habitual so I should let her cry it out. Not working well. She is right next to my bed, and knows I am there. Housebreaking is going much better than sleeping!!! |

How long has it been going on? I know with my little stinkers, it usually becomes a battle of wills to see who will give in first......persistence and consistence wins the battle every time. Can you put an old t shirt of yours in the crate? Maybe she just wants to be closer to you. Yorkies love to be close to their hoomans. |

Can all dogs be crate trained? We tried with Max but he just did not want to be in that cage. Maybe if we had been more persistent but it just broke our hearts to hear him cry the ENTIRE time he was in there. |
Since I got her, December 18! But, I expected that in the beginning because she was just ten weeks old. I fully expected to get up multiple times per night for housebreaking purposes thinking she had a small bladder... I’m just curious if others have had this experience and how to overcome it. I had a nightgown in her crate, and yesterday put in a T-shirt! I also bought a stuffed toy for her to sleep with! I do not want to move her to another room because I fully believe my fur babies are family. We have another dog who has always slept in our bed until she got too old to jump up. When I’m comfortable with Hope’s housebreaking, she will probably move into our bed🥰🥰🥰. Thank you for your advice. It is great to find this forum! |
I think crate training is good. Especially if you plan to take your baby to someone else’s home. My daughter doesn’t like dogs in the bed, thus my persistence!We also have a puppy playpen I purchased from Amazon and she really like it. I keep it in the great room/kitchen area. She can watch me cook and not feel neglected. Surprisingly she doesn’t cry������. |

Cody is a rescue, his prev. owner kept him in a crate all day while she was working. When hurricane Sandy hit he was in a shelter for 16 days crated without his family. Some groomers I had used had crated blowers and he thrashed about. At the groomer if he's crated he goes ballistic, I get there before he's finished so crate time is just a few minutes. I have to assume bad experiences in his past created fear of crates. |
