Grooming Trouble I've been taking my little girl to get groomed since she was 4 months old (she'll be two in January) and she has always done pretty well. The groomer progressed quite slowly with her as she didn't want to spook her and wanted her to get used to being groomed. But lately (the last few appointments) she will not stand still or will squat right down on the table when the groomer tries to do her underbelly and legs. She seems to be getting worse with each visit. Is this the 'terrible twos' or does anyone have any other advice? |
My yorkie take Trazodone, 2 hours before they do to the groomer. |
Two fingers one to each side just in front of hind upper legs ,she should not be able to squat then. And how about teaching your dog to stand and stay? |
Grooming I have a home groomer. I can be there and watch. Sometimex i help hold Daisy. Be very careful who grooms your yorkie. Groomers need to be gentle and knowledgable. I do nott trust pet shop groomers. Put yorkie in a hot dryer. No way! |
1 Attachment(s) My new groomer (here in Wisconsin) grooms the dogs behind a fence, but right out in the open of her salon/store. Piper is super-dramatic when going to get groomed--shivering, cowering, saddest lil thing ever. But when we walk in, Piper perks up and is completely calm and relaxed when Lisa holds her...I looked for a groomer for year before finding someone I felt I could entrust Piper; and Lisa listens to me, even takes notes as to my grooming requests. It's a tricky bit this grooming business because one never knows--not really...ONLY WITH MY GROOMER IN SPARKS NV, WITH CAROLYN, WAS I EVER COMPLETELY SURE AND COMFORTABLE. I think Lisa is doing a terrific job and we're thrilled to have "found" her... |
It's so frustrating trying to find a groomer who will not only listen to what you want but is also good with our babies. I'm also very hesitant to take Gidget to a pet store groomer. They are paid by the store and have no vested interest in doing a good job. |
Grooming Hope is three months old and I am thinking of grooming myself. Thus far I comb, clip where needed, brush teeth etc. She allows me to do anything I need to. I watched professional groomers on UTube, and I have the equipment. We also have a Cairn I groom, but she is very difficult to manage. Doesn’t like being touched. Hope is so gentle I’m thinking she will allow it. How many others groom your own? Just curious. The videos give me confidence...just hope it isn’t false confidence 😍😍😍. |
1 Attachment(s) I love grooming Deuce myself. He is brushed and the topknot is done every day. For us a haircut is a three day process. I usually do the job when he relaxed (usually between 10 a.m and 2 p.m.) I speak very softly to him and tell him to "stand like a show dog". He actually listens to me stands still and lowers his head. I support him lightly with my left hand on his back legs or under his tummy. I think he likes the vibration of the shaver on his back though. My hubby assists with holding him up so I can shave or scissor clip his chest, tummy and private areas. You need to be careful not to nick your pup in the areas where the skin is super soft. I scissor a little at a time. Less is always more and less chance for a big error. The worst that could happen is that it will need to grow back. I'll shave his body, neck and under area on the first day. Then I give him a bath. (He hates a bath) I like to bathe and blow dry before I begin scissor clipping his legs so they are fluffy. (He loves the blow dryer) Second day I scissor his legs, trim his paws and trim the pads with the mini shaver. I gauge how cooperative he is to see if I should continue with his head. Sometimes on day 2 but usually day three I scissor his beard, trim his topknot, and shave and trim his ears. At that point he's done but if I see a spot I think needs trimmed I'll clip as needed. Below is one of his most recent haircuts. This response is probably TMI but I'll put it out there anyway. |

Oh no, not too much at all. Which size blade do you use on his different areas? I have a four and ten. The video showed a five on the back, but one article I read said a four. I have trimming scissors and blunt scissors as well. I have been introducing the feel of the trimmer to her, but not using on her anywhere. She doesn’t seem frightened. I’m sure our first time will be trial and error, but she trusts me, and I believe we can do it. If not, I’ll find someone I feel comfortable with! |

I’m doubting I would have the patience to do as many as you have. Not sure I’ll get Hope done, but will try at least once! By the way, she is now sleeping all night. Not sure if you remember me posting last week about her crying all night? But, you gave me good advice! Only problem, she wakes promptly at 6 a.m. Can’t have everything, so we get up and have coffee and her breakfast together! Amazing how this little one has changed my life in a month. |

We just got done with our three-day grooming weekend here. First, we start with calming treats for all! Beau, at twelve, has let me groom him for most of his life. I usually groom his face and head first...getting that sculptured poodle "poof" takes patience. Then I scissor his torso and tail. On day two, I finish his legs and give him a bath. Gus, the baby, has a serious cotton coat. Unfortunately he tends to mat at his haunches when I let his coat get the slightest bit long. I start with his ears, and work as much of his head as I can cut before he gets too wiggly. When he stops cooperating with his head, I do his torso, then call it a day. Day two I finish his face and beard and do a "rough cut" on his legs. He then gets a bath, with a SERIOUS five minute conditioning. Day three I even up any hairs which pop out from his former mats and sculpt his legs. Tyrone, the muscle man, is DEATHLY afraid of water! At nine pounds, I cannot wrestle him in the bath, but he is getting better as he gets older and will let my husband bathe him. He has a floor-length beautiful silky coat, and we only do a sanitary cut and scissor around his beautiful green eyes. After his bath, we use spray conditioner and comb through his coat as we blow him dry. We have had luck spreading the grooming process over a few days, and working on them for short periods at a time. Everyone is rewarded with plenty of little salmon bites (which are their "special" bath and grooming treats), and they all get cuddled in a warm towel after their baths for a little one-on-one time. It is exhausting, but if they try my patience, I can stop and come back to it...that would not be the case for a groomer. |
