Tail docking
 
I thought I would share this article. I know it can be controversial but I am a huge fan of outlawing tail docking or at least changing the standard. If I am lucky enough to have another yorkie in my life I will insist that the tail is NOT docked. There is ZERO reason to subject the dog to such pain

That’s a great idea if you are on a waiting like list for a breeder. I normally end up with the pups no one wants so all but Joey have docked tails. I absolutely love Joeys full tail it gives him so much personality.

There is a petition online, but it seems to lump dewclaw removal in the same camp as tail docking and ear cropping.

Like Lovetodream88, I don't put dew claw removal in the same camp as tail docking/ear cropping

Just shy of 19,000 have signed the petition (not many).

I just wonder if online petitions really do anything or not. I feel like dew claw removal really does keep dogs from serious injury. Callie once ripped hers off and the nerve and vein was all right there hanging out. Some how we got lucky and there was no blood but I still had to wrap it and get her to the vet where they had to sedate her to cut it back and cauterize it. I also grew up with a beagle that had terrible dew claw issues constantly. I have been lucky so far with Joey. Penny and Ollie don’t have any but I think one of Penny’s was done wrong it’s weird.

I forgot to ask if Penny's vet had a chance to see the strange dew claw site--did it turn out that not all of the joints were removed?

I completely forgot to ask her :eek: it was a long night before and I don’t think my brain had enough sleep to function. It’s not bothering her but hopefully I can remember next time I go in.

I think the problem with outright banning is that it's hard to ban one thing and not the other. Many will argue that tail docking is "to prevent injury" just as you believe removing dew claws is.

I'm a huge fan of leaving things au natural. I don't believe most Yorkies are working animals anymore, but pets, so tail docking really seems useless and outdated. I love a full tail!

But, I also hesitate to insist on banning things in regards to our dogs as I feel it is a fine line of what some people find acceptable and what others don't.

The article talks about how injures are not that common with tails. I am not sure but I think dew claws might be a higher instances of injury. One issue with the fact the breeders sometimes do this on their own is lots of crappy breeders mess up too. I think one fun thing about Jackson and Joey are their tails.

Oh yeah I agree that I've never been one to believe there are THAT many injuries with tails. Does it happen? Yes. But dogs can break legs, toes, etc, we don't chop them off as a "preventative". That's just silly.

I just wish people would admit it's for cosmetic reasons. Show dogs for example do not have a high chance of winning in the ring in the US if they have a full tail. It's allowed but often judges won't choose them as the best of breed etc. It's all politics. :rolleyes:

Our breeder didn't let us know which puppy we'd be taking home until we got there, as the other boy was going to be a show dog and they were waiting to see which had the most "potential." We also didn't find out about the breeder until after all the puppies already had their tails docked. We keep Fabian in a puppy cut, except for his tail, which is long and swishy, like a pretend undocked tail.

AKC just seems out of date on this topic. See "Official Standard of the Yorkshire Terrier"--approved 10 July 2007. From the section "Tail"
Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back

The big thing is that the AKC gets their breed standard from the breed club like for us it would be the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America so essentially the YTCA would have to change it for the AKC to change it. I just don't get why Peta and other animal rights group have not jumped on the tail docking band wagon. Not that I am a fan of Peta but they sure can make some change happen sometimes.

I didn't have any choice in the matter. I got my Freya at five months old. Her tail is either docked or partially. I'm not sure how short they do Yorkies. All I know is the nubs I've seen on pit bulls; my brother and mom had one. If I'd had a say in the matter, NO. I don't like the idea of mutilating a dog for appearance.

The issue is the US show judges. It is improving, but many are older and s9me don’t like the change the standards, and in the end the standards are what the judge must follow.

Contact YTCA if you want to voice you opinion. That is where training judges starts.
