Two Yorkie Babies
 

Hello All!

I will be picking up my yorkie babies next weekend. I am getting a male and female. They are from different breeders, the female was born April 10 and the male born April 29.

Will I have any problems other than the normal puppy problems?

They will be to young to leave their mom so you could have lots of issues. Biting issues, possibly hypoglycemia, socialization issues and since the breeder obviously doesn’t know to keep the pups until 12 weeks or isn’t keeping them because she doesn’t want the added cost then you could be looking at a breeder who didn’t do any genetic testing or really care about breeding good which could end you up with pups with genetic illnesses. Do you plan on trying to breed these pups?

Then you need to very careful and spay before her first heat. I am very concerned with the breeder letting this pups go early.

I was always told its best to have two pups and never both of the same sex because they become a little more aggressive.

The male, at 6 weeks, is extremely young to be leaving the litter already. I will let some of the more knowledgeable folks on this site give you some helpful hints on what to watch for. Yorkie puppies are the cutest things out there so we would love to see some pics of your furbabies when you get them. Good luck!

The one born on April 29 will be only 5 weeks old if you're picking him/her up next week, that is way to young to have a puppy leave it's mother and it's against the law to sell a puppy under 7 weeks old in some states. By law the youngest a puppy can be sold is 8 weeks old in many states, this is not a reputable breeder but a back yard breeder (BYB). Be very, very careful if you bring a 5 week old puppy home.

Yep, the previous comments are correct. Reputable breeders keep their puppies with their mother and litter mates until they are at least 12 weeks old.
Also realize they are not safe to be outside and around other pups for several weeks after their immunizations. Sounds like you are going to have a house full of Yorkie fun:D

Sadly, many people who breed dogs want to be rid of them at six weeks because that is when the mother stops cleaning up after them as they begin to eat real food. Any reputable breeder would keep them until at lest 12 weeks when they are better ready to face the world, both physically and emotionally. It IS a lot of work to clean up after a litter of puppies for those additional weeks so you know you have someone who really cares and knows what they are doing when you find one.
You could have some real problems with your pups. They are just beginning to eat solid food. Even a change in water can make them sick. Just a bout of diarrhea can kill a small breed puppy of that age.
Larger breed dogs are also more prone to be sold off at the age of six weeks but have a better rate of survival because of their size. They still have the same adjustment problems like biting and potty training issues.
The muscle that controls the flow of urine in a dog does not mature enough to stop the flow until the age of 14 weeks. Until that age the game is about being close enough to the potty to make it in time. People end up punishing the poor pups for something that they have no control over. There are reputable breeders out there but it takes a little more investigation to find them. People who have bought young pups have often come to this form for help, many times way too late.

Separately, one or more comments above mention state laws concerning the separation of pups from their mamas. Located this 2017 article by Rebecca F. Wisch for Michigan State University College of Law, "Table of State Laws Concerning Minimum Age for Sale of Puppies," on Animal Legal & Historical Center.

"Approximately twenty-five states have laws or administrative regulations that state how old a puppy must be before it is offered for sale or adopted out to an owner."

Kentucky does not appear to be among the states that has a restriction. See the chart at the bottom of the article--it lists Kentucky, but there were no requirements summarized.

YES, you will very likely have MANY problems, and a very good chance that those problems will be severe and potentially life threatening -- all due to the age these breeders are allowing you to take them - which is just *astounding* to me. In many states, it's so dangerous to release pups this early that it's against the law!!

In addition to just the age related issue -- you have to question just what kind of unethical breeders would even release pups this shockingly early. The fact that they are unethical means their pups were likely improperly bred, the parents were *not* properly tested prior to breeding, they likely lived in very poor conditions that were actually hidden from your view, the Moms/Dads do not get proper care or health maintenance, there are likely congenital issues bred into the line that are just ignored (LP etc), and they are likely not fed the correct nutrition.

In addition to all of that, these puppies will never, ever, ever be properly socialized bc they are being taken WAY too young from their Mom and littermates. That can equal overwhelming behavioral issues down the line that you may not be able to correct bc you cannot change the fact you took them early.

These poor innocent little pups should *not* be taken home until 12 weeks old. If you care anything about them at all -- or about dogs in general and how they should be cared for and respected and/or how we all should consider their well-being and what's best for THEM -- you would not take them home until it was the right time for them.

Please put the puppies well-being first...doing anything less than that is not just negligent, but it would reveal that you aren't in any way yet cognizant as to what it means to be a Mom to a vulnerable little puppy.
