At What Point Do You Say Enough is Enough?! I just don't understand why anyone would risk taking their pet to this place. But more importantly, why is this place still operating? Corgi Dies During Grooming at New Jersey PetSmart: 'Absolute Worst Thing', Says Owner - entertainment - att.net |
I don't ever take my dogs to groomers, nope nope nope, NO WAY. Way too vulnerable. Not gonna happen. |
1 Attachment(s) I agree and therefore find myself at a standstill when it comes to having Piper groomed. I trusted my Nevada groomer, Carolyn, completely and without reservation, but she was a rare find and since moving, lil' Piper has become scruffier and scruffier--because I don't trust anybody!! I now have a great set-up for bathing Pipe, but am clueless and just plain scared, when it comes to trimming, etc. I will say that I am awed by Piper's willingness to sit very still (for a short time) and her patience, but it'd destroy me if I caused her pain due to my ineptness. 'course, I think she's still the cutest little thing ever in the universe--even scruffy! |

I trim Pfeiffer and Marcel - and for me, the key is using a very small-bladed scissors and good lighting. My grooming does not look awesome, lol, trust me! But I know their grooming sessions will be safe with me, as compared with a stranger...which just freaks me out. Those dryer boxes also freak me out! |
Is that the third death there? Crazy. If it’s the same person I don’t know why they haven’t been fired. I love my groomer we do mobile grooming except maybe once a year if the van breaks down then we take them in but its the same person . She calls them her babies and is absolutely great with them. Sammy used to hate groomers but he loved her. |
I don't trust places like PetSmart for grooming Gidget. The groomers are all paid by the hour, have no vested interest in the store or the grooming area. They are there to do a job and that's it. I take Gidget to a private groomer. This is her business and it's in her best interest to do a good job so I'll keep coming back. Also, if I had a real problem (not taking an interest in her, not really caring about anything but her money) I would certainly not recommend her to anyone. This is her business and she has a vested interest in caring for my Gidget and doing a good job. |
2 Attachment(s) I just love you, Ann; thank you for lovely compliment! I like to keep Piper's little muzzle and chin trimmed, so maybe to start, I could attempt a careful snip or two under her chin--using rounded scissors and with Piper's cooperation. Gulp! But you're so very right, Ann, it needn't be perfect! I reckon I'd better learn some basics because I don't have my Carolyn here and I'd never ever risk Piper's comfort, let alone her safety, for something cosmetic with an unknown 'professional' groomer. Piper with Carolyn's care--trimmed ears, lower legs shaved, neat and tidy--and Piper without Carolyn--little shaggy snout! |
I will using a new groomer next week and very nerves about it. |
I have a mobile groomer as well . I don’t like how long a dog has to sit at the groomer when it’s at a place like Petsmart. It’s unfortunate that this keeps occurring at the same location . I imagine the deaths can be linked to he box dryers . |
I'm going to a new groomer next week. It is set up to where you can watch the groomer. You can also do your own grooming and they provide the sink and apron and shampoo. I'm afraid of cutting Zeke's nails though. |

I can't stay and watch Cody get groomed, he's such a momma's boy and drama queen, he would never behave for the groomer, with my girls I could stay, they were so well behaved. |
I am so thankfully for my mobile groomer. She has become like family. We always chit chit for 30 mins or so afterwards. Jackson still hates it because that's just him... he's a freak about vets/groomers/etc and always has been. But I KNOW she is good to him because afterwards he goes up to her happily for a treat and will lay by her while we talk etc. She is a good person and more importantly does a great job. I kind of inherited my moms cockapoo, Lola, LOL (I'm the dog person in the family) and I used to take her to Pet Valu... she started getting horrible skin rashes etc after and I wonder if she was getting razor burn because once I started using my mobile groomer for Jackson for her... she never once had one of those horrible rashes!! So I wonder if the poor thing was being roughed around. :( |
This is EXACTLY why I need your help!! My precious Yorkie died tragically at a groomers. When another dog died at the same groomers, in the same way. I started a petition to change the law! I would be most grateful if you’d sign and SHARE the petition with all dog lovers. (more details are in the petition itself). Thank you for your help with this important issue!!! Right now national news NBC is featuring information about theses deaths. They pointed out that the groomers in all of these states are not licenses. People licensed, like nurses, doctors, and I think hair dressers, are held responsible for their actions as it relates to the professions standards, and most carry professional liability insurance to protect themselves and their clients. I groom Cali’s full coat and she is blessed with a great coat that does rarely tangles, I top off the tips of her ears, scissor around her feet and brush her teeth every day. Other than that let the hair just grow. |
My In-laws use petsmart and petco for grooming. They know about the deaths because I have told them. It comes down to the attitude many people have about even their own health...."it won't happen to me." |
I have never used a chain store for grooming for 3 reasons. 1-I want my pups to get use to one person handling them so they won't be afraid when they go. 2-these chain store groomers have no investment in the business, they couldn't care less if they give the dog a good or bad hair cut. 3-you never get the same groomer Now with these deaths I would never use them. I believe it's carelessness of the groomer. Didn't a dog die because the so called groomer put the dog in the blower crate and forgot the dog was there, the dog was found DEAD. |

May be "not true" in your area, not so in "my" area. I have heard this many times from ppl that have / had used used a chain store groomers. I personally choose to use a private groomer that owns their business, "my choice". You're lucky you to had the same groomer for a year. |

My comment came across harshly and I did not intend it to. Sorry, I was short on time, and posted too succinctly. The feeling this kind of thing will not happen to us is a common occurrence among us all. I believe all of us have something we should do, yet we do not because the risks seem so minimal that we just assume the worst will not happen to us. For example, checking the air pressure and tread for our tires regularly to prevent blow outs, seeing a doctor every single year, etc...... We all want to believe the best the possible outcome will happen. Sadly, sometimes that simply does not happen. |

I am in sc/nc and my daughter started her job in PetSmart and worked her way all over store until she got the position in grooming and they sent her to school. She always was very professional and loved what she did.. never any complains on her.. now she is a vet tech at banfeild in PetSmart and is very good at it too. But she does still go and groom on the side. And still has loyal customers. And they never have a complaint.. niether do I.. she is my personal groomer also with my Yorkie. She bought him for me..I think u have to find the one groomer who has their whole heart in it , I don't think it is the company fault.. they gave my daughter a way to learn and do what she loves and it shows in her work.. guess I am lucky my baby knows his groomer. Honestly I would start taking applications for the best groomer if I had to..lol alot of groomers is just making a buck and don't love it.. or they did it thinking it was what they wanted and found out different.. |

Chloe my little yorkie who passed away last year went to PetSmart once and only once. I picked her up and she had a top knot. When I removed it I saw a fairly large cut on her head. I called to complain and they insisted it happened at home. Seriously how does a pup get a cut under a top knot? I never took her there again. Sophie my new furbaby goes to the most amazing groomer. I have never met a groomer so fiercly protective and loving with dogs. Sophie adores her. The last time I went to get her she was asleep inside Katy's coat all snuggled up. I got very lucky finding her <3 |
Some of us live in a place where there are no mobile groomers or any experienced, stable private groomers. We only have a Petsmart (no Petco). My husband and I typically groom both our boys; however, we do take them to Petsmart every once in a blue moon. We take him to the same guy, and he is the only one who is allowed to groom them. He calls the minute they are finished for us to come and get them. He is sensitive to Zeus having had LCP and that his left leg/hip "gives out," so he does him in two separate intervals with time to rest in between. While Zeus is resting, he cuts Perseus. He has Yorkies at home himself, so he loves the breed. If he ever leaves, I would probably not trust anyone else even though it's the same people at our Petsmart since it opened. Just wanted to point out that not everyone has choices, which is why we typically groom our own babies. |
Grooming your own babies is the best way to go!! :D Saves money, more bonding time, and safer! And, practice makes pawfect. It's okay when they don't look good the first few tries. ;) |
