Don't put him in the car when he's in that excited state. Walk him first, even if it's for like 10 minutes? Then try to put him in the car. If he starts screaming, take him out, try it again. It sounds like he looks at the car as a reward. So don't give him his reward (the car ride) until he does the behavior you want him to (calm and quiet).
I'm sure it wouldn't be an easy fix but maybe set aside a day when you have nothing else to do but to desensitize him to the car. Leash on, walk towards car, the minute screaming starts, walk away from the car. ANY little bit of quietness from him even if it's like 3 seconds gets a reward (his fav treat).
It likely won't happen overnight but maybe if you can get the excitement less down *first* prior to getting in the car, it could help alleviate some of the screaming during the car ride? |
