screaming in the car I need ideas or any kinda help with this. Joey screams in the car I mean like non stop and I have no idea how to stop it. It doesn't matter if I hold him or he is in the snoozer. It doesn't matter if his sisters are with him or not. He did it the whole hour and half to the pet expo over the weekend. I have no idea what to do. He doesn't seem anxious he almost seems over excited and I'm at a loss. He rides in the car a lot and has since he was a puppy. He starts agility Wednesday so I will talk to the trainer then and see if she has any ideas but I was hoping someone here might. |
You may want to check out his thread...lots of ideas and it's fun reading! Thread is entitled (I think): All of a Sudden Charlie is Going Nuts in Car [QUOTE=SWOwner;4608459]We take Charlie (9 month old Yorkie Going Nuts in Car) everywhere we go without a problem. We have a carrying case for him that has been just fine since we got him. We place the case on the floor - he would jump in it and off we would go. We would zipper it up when we get out of the car (he has a hole to stick his head out) of and screens all the way around - no problem. Now, he is fine (in his carrying case) until we pull out of the garage. All of a sudden he goes nuts just about jumping out of the carrying case. I tried holding him but can’t stop this behavior. It is though he sees a ghost! He barks, screams and scares us - we have tried to quiet him down without success. He gets so worked up that we are afraid he will nip us - his legs going 100 miles an hour, etc. If we can get him in the store - he quiets down completely - always loved going shopping with us. It all started recently when he would know we were going to stop the car to go into the store - he would go nuts until we got him into the store. Now – he just won’t stop the moment he gets in the car - we simply don’t know what to do and hoping that someone has gone through this. We take trips and this just isn’t going to work. |
Have you tried putting him in the car and not going anywhere and just giving treats and talking or playing with him. |
I have heard some say their pup does better in a rather enclosed crate than an open car seat. |

Sure hope so! In the meantime, don't forget earplugs or earmuffs or some such, for yourself--you're such a good, good mom!! |
Does he do it even if the other pups are with him or just when he is alone? |

Hmmm... that's a tricky one. I would say a crate possibly, with a blanket on it... first get him used to it to make it a positive experience, of course. Don't put him in the car when he's in that excited state. Walk him first, even if it's for like 10 minutes? Then try to put him in the car. If he starts screaming, take him out, try it again. It sounds like he looks at the car as a reward. So don't give him his reward (the car ride) until he does the behavior you want him to (calm and quiet). I'm sure it wouldn't be an easy fix but maybe set aside a day when you have nothing else to do but to desensitize him to the car. Leash on, walk towards car, the minute screaming starts, walk away from the car. ANY little bit of quietness from him even if it's like 3 seconds gets a reward (his fav treat). It likely won't happen overnight but maybe if you can get the excitement less down *first* prior to getting in the car, it could help alleviate some of the screaming during the car ride? |

We used to travel with our Zuzi since she was already 4 months old. I can say that she is already used to the drives, doesn't scream but still, I can see that she is not completely calm. Even after so many trips and hours in the car she will never rest and fall asleep. Lately, I observed that when I keep her in her transport bag, she is completely different. She will lay down and sleep. Just giving an idea that you might want to try. |
