Dog flu? I saw a thing that the dog flu is in almost every state now. Do y’all vaccinate for it? How do you feel about it? Callie dearly loves her pet expos and has a weakened immune system so I’m wondering if I need to get all my babies vaccinated for it. Plan on either calling my vet about it today or bringing it up at Callie’s recheck next Monday? Opinions, ideas, thoughts and information welcomed. |
Gee, to bad you didn't hear this earlier last week, I just took the kid to the vet yesterday, I would have asked her. Codys isn't around dogs or goes to doggie parks, just the groomer but that's enough. I had read last year when this flu just started that it would spread to other states due to ppl vacationing and traveling with their dogs. It was to early for me to question my vet about it last year. With Callie’s weakened immune system I would check with your vet on that, but get the two younger ones vaccinated if you plan to go to pet expo's. Callie may miss out on these events, but always better to be safe then sorry. |
I just googled this flu, the strain is called H3N2, the site I read this flu is in my neighboring states, New York and New Jersey, I advise checking the state you live in to see if there are reports of this flu. |
It was recommended by my vet last summer in central Illinois because of a huge outbreak in the Chicago area and I declined at the time. After reading about it, I will probably have Bella vaccinated at her next annual checkup. |
Here's a good article from the University of Illinois Vet Med College: Update for Veterinarians on Canine Influenza - Vet Med at Illinois My vet is quoted in the article: Quote:

A couple months ago Cali’s dental was due. It the vet was so full of flu pups they delayed it because they didn’t want her exposed to all those illmpups My friend who own a kennel are insisting on seeing proof of flu immunizations alone with the other usual vaccinations. |
Is there a certain time of year to get vaccination? Any known side-effects from vaccine? Piper isn't around other dogs necessarily, but we go all over the place and to a variety of stores, walking paths, etc. I think this vaccine is in order... |
OMG I was on the internet for an hour checking out this H3N2 flu and found it IS in Pa. I emailed my vet with the info. I found, asked can I bring the kid in for the vaccine. My vet said she hasn't seen canine influenza in our area for at least 3 years. If there appears to be a threat she will let me know. I suggest anyone reading this thread to contact their vets to see if they have treated any of their furry clients. I read infected dogs can pass this flu on to cats. |

the canine influenza virus transmit? The canine influenza virus can pass from dog to dog through virus particles in the air (that is through coughing or sneezing) or by coming into physical contact with other dogs (touching noses). It can also be picked up if a dog touches or plays with objects that were touched by infected dogs (food bowls, toys). Humans can even transfer the virus between dogs on clothes and shoes. For example, they may spread the virus if they touch an infected dog, or even touch a toy or a doorknob that the dog has made contact with, and then touch another dog before washing their hands. |

Some years back when dogs were getting infected with Lyme disease in my county, on one of my visits my vet advised me about this and suggested to get the dogs vaccinated. In my county Lyme vaccine is now a core vaccine. Do not go by what "my" vet told me. I have been using this vet since the 80"s. Last year when I read about this new strain of flu it was in the Ill. area, I knew if there was a threat in my county she would advise me. Yesterday when I was researching this flu I read it was in NY, NJ which are my neighboring states, in read further I saw it was also in Pa. I just saw my vet this past Sunday, I "know" if there was cause for concern she would have told me, but to put my mind at ease I sent her an email inquiring about vaccinating my kid. Reason why she told me if there is a threat she would notify me. I have to assume any vet with steady clients do the same thing. You do not have a vet, so who is going to inform you? Make some calls to vets in your area, ask about this flu, make several calls to see if they all tell you the same thing. This is my advise to you and anyone that reads this thread. |
Which is exactly why I turn to you --and Yorkie forum--for guidance. Will do and thank you so very much! |

So my vet has treated a few cases of the dog flu and does recommend the shot for my dogs due to all the pet events and training. Here is my issues even if we got the shots this week they wouldn't have full immunity by next Saturday I don't think (Phil ?). So not sure whether I should take everyone in to Callie's recheck appointment Monday for shots or not. Joey reacts poorly to shots so I always have to give Benadryl to him before any shot. |
My dog is not subjected to any dogs, just the groomer. If my vet told me she treated a few cases I would be getting my kid vaccinated. Even if the vaccine doesn't kick in for this upcoming event, there will be others, besides that, this flu is in your area, get your babies protected, ask about Calli tho. |

Just a heads up it’s one shot for each of the two strands. |

Primary immunization requires two vaccinations given two to four weeks apart. Annual revaccination with one dose is recommended. |
Here's another website that goes into greater detail about dog flu and the vaccination: https://www.dogflu.com/about/products Keep in mind that this website is maintained by Merck, the manufacturer of the vaccine. Quote:

A link to the product label can be found here, as well as a summary of the recommendations for the use of the canine flu vaccine: https://www.merck-animal-health-usa....Flu-Bivalent/1 When I google side effects for the vaccine, the only reputable site I've come up with so far is the AVMA general page for vaccine reactions: https://www.avma.org/public/PetCare/...ccination.aspx If I can find something more specific, I'll post it. |
A lot of good links about canine influenza (dog flu) here on the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) web page: https://www.avma.org/KB/Resources/Re...kgrounder.aspx |
AAHA vaccination guidelines I found a FANTASTIC link to the latest AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) vaccination guidelines here: https://www.aaha.org/guidelines/cani...alculator.aspx Quote:
