Yorkie weight

I just bought a male yorkie today. The breeder told me that he was under 1 pound. He is 8 weeks old. I weighed him when I got home and he weighs 1 pound and 5 oz. Just wondering is there a formula to figure out what he will weigh? Also when are they considered full grown. I was told he would only be around 2 1/2 to 3 pounds full grown. But why would the breeder lie about his weight.

The easy formula is 3x weight at 8 weeks, 2 x weight at 12 weeks. At the top, admin has a growth chart you can check. He will still be very small when grown, even if he is 4 pounds or so. I am sure he is adorable. Have you posted pictures? Does he have a name yet?

I personally have been taught to double their weight at 13weeks and add another half a lb.. But there is no real way to know how much your baby will weigh full grown. My Harleys parents were 7 and under and he's almost 10lbs! hehe Congrats on your new furbaby btw!

5 oz. isn't very much and I sure wouldn't worry about it. I hope you trust your breeder enough that you don't feel you were lied to. It sounds like your pup will be smallish. There are a couple different formulas to figure weight but at 8 weeks they say multiply by 3. Any dog under 4 lbs. is VERY small.

They stop growing at different rates. Some are full grown at 6 months. Mine is still adding weight at 9.5 months. She weighs just over 3 1/2 lb. and she weighed the same as yours at 8 weeks.

Right now I hope you concern yourself with keeping your little baby safe, warm and with a full tummy. These tiny ones can go downhill fast so you have a big job ahead of you. The recommended age for acquiring Yorkie pups is 12 weeks b/c they are so small. Yours is smaller than average. (i didn't get to bring my girl home until she was 2lb. at 12 weeks.)

Please get some nutrical (petstore) as soon as possible and give him about an inch of it 3x a day for the next few weeks. If you don't have any or can't get it tonight start giving him a little Karo syrup. This is to prevent hypoglycemia attack which is very common. Make sure your puppy is eating a little every 2 hours. If you need ideas to get him to eat this is a great place with lots of helpful people. I don't want to overly concern you but you have a tiny, young pup and your work cut out for you. good luck and remember we are here to help.

Congratulations on your new addition. Can't wait to see pictures. The weight issue could be an honest mistake. Her scales could be off. I would take her to the vet as soon as possible and have them weigh her on their baby scale so you will have an accurate weight. If it is really bothering you, after your vet weighs her, then call the breeder and ask about it.

Five ounces at 8 weeks can translate to another pound as adult if you use the 3 times 8 week weight. If this is an issue for you, maybe she would take the puppy back..

I want to agree with Shelbysmom, 1 pound 5 ounces is very very small. I think most breeders like the pup to be 2 pounds before leaving home. 8 weeks is not a common age for yorkie pups to be placed at their new home. Take care to make sure your baby is warm, and be careful of stepping on him. Congratulations on your new baby!
