Hair cut My little Yorkie boy is almost 3 years old. He has always had long silky hair. Thinking about getting him a puppy cut. Love his long hair but so hard to maintain. Brush him everyday, but he plays so rough it's an on going task. My concern is if I have him cut short would it affect the texture of his hair if I let it grow back? Has everyone had any experience with their baby's hair changing after a major cut? |
My groomer said yes, but I need something I can deal with...... so his is not super short but he still looks fuzzy.:p |

1 Attachment(s) Piper had longish hair when I got her and she was about three years old. The first groomer (and I use the term loosely) chopped her hair all up; I mean it looked like groomer literally grabbed pieces of Piper's hair and cut at random with dull scissors. As Piper's hair grew out it looked as it had and it felt as soft as before--probably a little silkier and softer, truly. Howsabout some photos of your little gent?! |
Lacie's hair was floor length when she was on the show circuit. After she championed and retired from the show ring I had her buzzed and then cried for days. Immediately we started regrowing her coat. Her hair is once again floor length - it took about a year. It is the same beautiful tan and blue silky coat. Lacie had her spa day today and I am going to get pics tomorrow. |
Long hair, short hair, no hair...Your sweet baby girl is a little peach, for sure!! |
Anyone with thoughts of going from long hair to a puppy cut? I've never done a short cut on my Yorkies & kind of nervous. |

My 4 girls now all passed were kept in full coat, I had lost two before I moved to the country and had two left, both in full coat, now they had a yard to run and play in and I was always picking leaves and what not out of the smallest ones hair, so in she went and got her first puppy cut, she was 10 yo, I LOVED it, now I was able to mush her up and smother her body with smooches. My adopted boy is kept in a puppy cut year round, I can love him up without concern of matting his hair, I LOVE puppy cuts. I also get to see that cute little butt wiggle when he trots lol. Love my boy. |
I also get to see that cute little butt wiggle when he trots lol Gotta love that hitch in their get-along, that's for sure!! |
Thank you guys so much with your positive words. I have an appointment with groomer this Tues. we'll see. Love the little butt trot. I can't even see Rugers' butt for all the hair. Hopefully he has a manly butt 😆 I will try to send before & after pictures. But, how do you resize pictures from an iPad? I'm a dummy at this. 😝 |

Hair grows back. Emma is in long coat, I don't brush her out like I should and I pay for it because she gets a few matts and then I cut them out. Luckily they are usually underneath and you can't tell I cut a huge chunk out but I'm saying that to say Long coat requires some work. Puppy cuts are cute and are a perfectly nice option. Our Troy was kept short and it worked just fine. I think because Emma is female and her coat is so silky I love the longer coat on her. So I make it work. |
Personally, I love long floor length coats, but keeping one "in coat" requires a lot of grooming and with some dogs it just isn't practical. Lollie is my "tom girl" yorkie. She plays hard and loves to roll in - well just about anything. She is much happier when she doesn't have to endure lengthy grooming times. A quick bath and blow dry between clippings suits her just fine. Lacie, on the other hand, is much more mellow- and loves to be groomed, alas she has a beautiful floor length coat. Hair grows back. It took about a year the one time I cut Lacie down from dragging the floor to short puppy cut to back to floor length. BTW, there were many tears on my part during the process - the moment I had Lacie cut down I knew I had made a mistake  My best advice is to follow your  and do what feels right. |
I had Deuce in somewhat of a long coat for the first 5 years then we moved to a lake and ticks were a problem. I lamented for many months and finally cut him down. Now It's so much easier to manage and guess what . . . no ticks. I don't know if they just don't come around much because we're always here or if because we have shorter hair and different flea and tick meds. My boy loves to be groomed with a little massage. It was so difficult for me to decide to cut him down. |
