Well, the first 3 callers suck, but I must say the 4th caller wasn't too off base. There are warnings posted all over the net about having the breeder send pictures to you of the pup other than what they are using to advertise with...... Angie |

Gee, I'll never be nervous about calling a breeder again, I know I don't sound THAT ignorant. :rollingey (or rude.) |

A friend of mine has this problem all the time. Recently she had 1 phone call just the same but asking if they can have a pup for 300 dollars. She also got an email from someone saying Im interested in your product aqnd would like you to mail me the puppy.I live in the UK and will send a money order for payment. Whats weird is that he called the babies a product and who pays with a money order from that far away.I told her its a scam with the recent scams that have been popping up.Most people that call her for a pup are just like that. They call like you are a pet store just questions and no friendliness. She stays away from people like this. If the phone call is cold then their not going to get sneak peak at a picture. As the little cuties are running around its hard to give your babies away to someone that you dont know .Its hard for me to see them go and their not even mine .good luck with your future phone calls. |

I'm nervous searching for a dog Yikes! I could never be a breeder and have to go through that. I've been so nervous just searching for the pup that I want. I had specific things that I wanted from the breeder. I called two people from the paper and they were insulted that I would ask questions about there lines and health and what they feed and so on. I did most of my questions by email. I figured, if the breeder was really interested, he/she could respond to the questions he/she wants to. I had some breeders say they were impressed with my knowlege and research and some I could tell thought I was crazy. I found one woman who seems so nice. She emails me a lot (I think my pup is in this litter). I am STILL nervous even after hearing good things about her because I have never done this before. Especially because she lives 5 hours away and I have not got to meet her or her dogs in person yet. I had a nightmare about it last night. Anyways, price was never an issue. She will probably be over $1,000 but she hit most of what I wanted on my list (well, that is if she is being honest I have no way to prove it) and she seems to have a good reputation. I am VERY limited in my funds and $1000 is A LOT of money to me. I am going to have to give up some other things this year because I don't want to drain my savings. I will pay the price for what I want and my house is just too empty to not have a Yorkie here. Following my dreams without my furry buddy next to my side just doesn't seem right so I decided that it is worth it for me to spend the $$. My first questions weren't even about money. That was the last one. suzie |

Sometimes I receive phone calls like : 1 ) Hello , What is the price of your puppies ? I am very poor , is it possible to have a breeding quality puppy for $200.00 or less ? You know I will giver her all the love she needs . 2 ) Hello , Is is possible to have an auto-cleaning puppy ? I heard that this breed of dogs don't need to have a bath ? 3 ) Hello , Someone gave me your name and phone number . What is the price of your puppy ? I want him or her as small as possible ? I want the puppy with a full floor lenght coat and champion ? Sometimes those peoples tell me that I know nothing about the breed and they will buy somewhere else . Some phone calls can be very annoying . |

Geez, I suppose there are people all over that speak like that but it still surprised me. Most of the experience I have had with Oregonians they are much better spoken than that! |

[QUOTE=Olivier]. 2 ) Hello , Is is possible to have an auto-cleaning puppy ? I heard that this breed of dogs don't need to have a bath ? Are they thinking that a Yorkie is like a oven . Peoples can be really stupid from times to times . |

I'm amazed at the things people ask! Some people can be so rude...I can't believe they didn't even say hello or introduce themselves to you. I'm sure those are automatic NO's! |

It's so sad, some people just don't have a clue!!! They have way too much time!!! |

 I get those kind of calls all the time. I just love it when the caller doesn't say anything more than "how much are they?" I tell them and they're absolutely STUNNED!! They say, "HOW MUCH?" Or "Oh my!" And hang up. Then there's the ones that say, "I'm on a fixed income and can only afford $100.00 or $200.00, so if you don't sell them all, can you call me back and I'll pay you then?" My ad's usually say something like: "AKC Yorkshire puppies. 3M, 1F. blk/tan. Tails docked and dew claws removed. Call _ _ _ _ _." People call and say, "Do you have any males? What color are they? Are they registered? What's a dew claw?" I have caller ID and when they start calling, I usually let my machine pick it up and call them back. You can usually tell by the message they leave whether they're serious or just looking. I really like the people that say "Well, I can buy one at so-in-so pet shop for $XXXX!! I tell them if that's what they want to do, I wouldn't recommend it, but go ahead! It gets nerve racking at times. Suz |

Looking is tough too I must say finding a good breeder is tough also! I called one guy and the only thing he could tell me about the puppies was how big they would be. I wanted to know more personal stuff about the pups but he gave me nothing! That is kinda scary. Then another lady I emailed just told me to 'pick one from the website and then come and pick it up." Honestly, I have a budget too, mostly because I am also thinking about the expenses AFTER I get my baby, does this sound alright to say to a breeder? Are there good breeders out there who do not just care about money (I am not judging any of you who are breeders, just want to know how people feel about that)? I mean, I am willing to spend around $1000 and all, but much more then that and I am broke. |

Most breeders I talked to... probably thought I was "dumb". The first question I did ask was, "How much is your puppy?" Even though having a pet, or in this case, a yorkie shouldn't be our first consideration but it is. If the puppy is out of my price range, why should I bother to continue the conversation? For example, I've heard it from $500 ~ $4,000. Now, before I pursued for a yorkie, or started talking to breeders, I surveyed newspapers and online site to "check" the market value of a yorkie. Then, I have an idea what an "okay" price will be. If the breeder's price is what I can afford then I'd continue. BTW: I paid mine for $1,200. |

I have found that with my experience in talking with breeders that I have not once ever had to mention price. Normally that usually comes up in conversation by the breeder(s) after we have spoken awhile. I would find it terribly hard to be in a breeder's shoes and finding that "perfect" home for one of their fur babies. I give the breeders a lot of credit for screening/interviewing and finding out as much information about the "adoptive parents" as the breeder can. The bottom line is the Yorkie's well being is top priority and everything else just follows. :p |

Kimberly...haven't you heard???? This is a NEW breed of dogs. They even poop gold nuggets and wipe their butts! :D Phone calls like that are annoying. My favs are the one that want you to sell them dirt cheap. |

When I was looking for Bridget I had a very disturbing conversation with a "breeder" I found on the web. When I inquired about her pups for sale, she indicated that they "get all their puppies from Europe, cause that's the only place you can get the good yorkies". When I asked about the parents, she said "what on earth would you need to know about the parents for"? Needless to say the conversation didn't go much further after that. That night I found YT and learned all about breeders, questions to ask, etc. When I later adopted Bridget, I was much more informed and educated. Go YT!Wouldn't it be great if all these folks calling you had visited YT first! :D |

Please Advice. I'm so glad this thread got started!! I wanted to ask for advice but afraid to start a thread and attrack the person I'm dealing with. I'm presently in dealing with a new YT breeder for a puppy. She had never been here (YT) before posting her puppies for sale. 1st of all I have never purchased a pup out of state and she has never shipped, but by luck her hubby if fly to Pheniox and can stop in CA to drop off the pup. This is very good right?? Payment: She does not have Paypal so she said I can send her a ck. to cover air fair, med. certificate, hubby's extra fair for stopping (this was my choice) and 100 deposit total 315.00. Not bad...bal. 600.00. Now my question: What is the best way to pay this bal. ? she said I can pay cash when I pick up my puppy is this ok? Testing: I'm no expect but I think she might be a new breeder, I could be wrong but if I'm right thats ok. I asked about testing for Liver Shunt she never has so she looked into it for me and its 180.00. Now my question: Who should pay for that me or her? she does give a 2 yr warenty. What else should I be doing? Last Q. I need names for boys :D |

LS testing ? The breeder would pay for her dog's testing........not you, If you choose to buy a pup without it being done, that's on you. If your asking who should pay for the pup.......the breeder could have the pups tested before the sell and add the cost to the purchase price........every breeder is different, a lot of breeders do this testing as a standard and their prices are set, etc...... but, if this person is new to breeding I wouldn't count on her to pay for it if she dosen't have her breeding program set to require all puppies to be tested before selling. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with asking for price first thing in a conversation, but the best way I feel to lead but to it is say your first name maybe, what you are looking for and then ask "May I ask the price for your yorkies?" Last week I had a lady call about a future female. She wanted a pet she said. She was very friendly until I told her my practices had changed and my AKC puppies papers were limited with a spay, neuter contract at certain prices. Her whole demeanor changed and so did her story "well I just want a couple litters" when I didnt change what I had said "she continued with "Ive been searching for a yorkie and Ive never heard any of this sh*t before you" I only responded with "This is common practice with breeders" I have purchased a new male and it was requested I not sell with open registration. I will honor it. I was also asked not to breed to my CKC females. I will also honor that. This is the way the breeder felt and I respect them. With experience you learn a few tricks. One is that not everyone is totally honest with you. I beleive now by experience and good advise that limiting registration is a good practice. It helps a breeder also learn quickly the intregity and intent of the individual you are dealing with on the other side. I dont have a problem with someone wanting to breed, but I do have a problem with someone lying to me. |

wow this thread is helping me know what I should say to breeders and how I should approach my conversations with breeders. Somethings I know I shouldn't ask/do just by having common sense. Thanks a bunch though :) |

Breeders have it just as hard as Buyers! You have to watch for people scamming you out of a puppy and deal with people who don't even really care about your furbabies! |

 they don't have to call http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29118 |

Looking at it from both sides, when I was looking for my babies, when I called I introduced myself, also told about life style..no kids and such.then asked about thier puppies, asked about the size of parents, did they own both, told them up front I didnt want a lilttle sicky, that I wanted it to be akc standard, then asked about the price, told them upfront that price was not the real issue, but was it what I was looking for..if it was more than I had in mind and I really liked what I heard..I asked if it would be possiable to visit.when I fell in love, then I had to descide if I could pull up that much cash and still have money for all of babys health needs..on my female she was more than I had,so I asked how often the parents were bred..I actually waited for the next female to have pups, giving me the extra time to raise the money,no I have not ever been sorry I waited, and I am so please with both of the babys..now as one who has had pups,I will say upfront that my babies start at $1,000 and if they would like to see the baby I will set up an appointment..its funny how that gets rid of the rubbish calls, kinda gives them an upfront..but I have had people show up,but I didn't let them take a puppy..gut feeling..I also lied because I didn't like them, said after they called the vet called about the results of the liver function test.."its not good" and ushered them out the door |

not a breeder Well, I am not a breeder but have had Silk in the paper for sale today. BTW, I am keeping her. Anyway, this one lady called and wanted to buy her for her two year old child. As soon as she told me this, I said,"Sorry, I do not sell my yorkies (like I'm a bigtime breeder LOL) to families with small children," Then she's like, well my mother has one and he isn't rough with it. I told her my grandchildren are three and five and they don't even get around my yorkies. It is just too dangerous for the little ones to fall on them. She was royally pi$%$% and hung up. Then I had another dorkie person call and she wanted to know if she is a "yorkie, yorkie" or a "yorkshire terrier". I had to tell her they are the same from the way she decribed another dog it sounded like someone had maybe tried to sell her a Silky or a half yorkie. Then I had a nice lady that wanted her for her widowed mother so i told her I would let her know Monday. But since I posted last night, Silk has had almost a complete turnaround. She chased ceeby about five feet several times today and is barkibng and everything but she is still on the couch. She has been out several times today and played just a little. But, today has been a lesson in people for me when I do start breeding. |

You really do need to watch children with yorkies. Most certainly wouldnt mean to hurt them but they just dont know. My three yr old had never been without a yorkie. I still have to watch her closely. But she is excellent for her age, gentle, loving, and will even tell people this is the way you hold a baby. But shes 3 and has her moments, so you just cant let her go free with them. My nieces came for a visit, wonderful girls, 5 and 7. They havent had a dog in their life. They didnt know how to hold one, sometimes trying to hold them upside down!!!! Never meaning to hurt them they just didnt know. As far as they were concerned they were a toy. |

Oh, but then you do get people who ask about them and when you tell them the price they don't bat an eyelash, just ask if they can see them, and when they do decide they want one, they whip out the money and pay with no problem. From some people, she does take payments, (depends on if she likes them or feels they are going to be good yorkie parents). She has never been sorry. (Except for once.) |

What about vet bill if they are looking for a deal These people that say they need a cheep dog because they cannt pay alot of money. What if the dog got sick and when the dog gets older what are they going to do with the yorkie. When my TJ got sick I paid out alot for vet bills and I couldn't help the out come. He had cancer. I would have done anything to help him if he could have gotten better. But I did not want to see him suffer anymore. You could see he was in alot of pain. I miss him so. Hanna |
