Hello everyone Yesterday, I rescued a little Yorkie, he has no name yet. I think I should call him escape artist as he has already tried to escape from the house. He was being abandoned by someone. He very matted and thin, and will not even treats. I bought, food, bed, a cage and many toys but he seems afraid of everything. I am taking him to the Vet on Monday for a check up, all necessary shots, to be neutered and to be bathed and groomed. I will try and take a before and after photo of him. He is blonde with silver undercoating but very matted. I have had dogs in the past but always raised from puppies. He seems young, but hopefully the vet will be able to determine his age. Tried to walk him, it was a disaster, he will need much training. I have never seen a little dog that could move so fast, when I put in the backyard for potty, he took off like a flash, thank God I have a fence or he would have been gone. This is my first Yorkie and first rescued dog. I would appreciate all the tips possible especially how I get some weight on him, since he doesn't want to eat. Thanks all, Ed. |
Watch him very carefully--as until she realized she was truly home--Piper would try to dash out at any opportunity. She, too, is like lightning. All I can suggest is that you show patience, understanding, and lovelovelove and it'll all work out. Be ever-vigilant as you cannot trust him (not to dash) for a very long time. Bless you for rescuing this needy little guy; he will be yours with endless love before you know it! |
Welcome to YT and thank you for rescuing. I too have a rescue a surrender by prev. owner. This poor baby sounds like he was very neglected and not loved. You will need much patience with him and give lots of TLC. My boy was not neglected, he was loved much, he was surrendered for financial reasons. He didn't know how to play with toys because he never had any, over time he is now the yorkie he was meant to be. You may never know what his past was, how he was treated, remember you are a stranger to him, and he is scared. He is in a home where everything is strange and scary, new smells, sounds, surroundings. Everything with this dog needs to be done in baby steps. He has to gain TRUST in YOU, he has to bond with YOU, he has to learn you will keep him safe. Be very careful opening your front door if he is "bolting", maybe confine him to a room where he is not near the door. Leash walking sounds like it's something new to him and that will take some time for him to adjust to. Great that you have a vet appointment for Monday. Sounds like this guy has found a wonderful loving home, something he needs to learn also. Don't worry about a name lol, you will find a perfect one for him. Please keep us posted on his adjustment in his new life. |
Aw bless you for rescuing poor lil pup. I'm sure you will build a bigger bond than we already do with our yorkies. Best of luck :) |
Good for you for saving him In time you should be able to gain his trust. Post some pics. |

Need more help I have now had My rescued Yorkie, since Sat 600pm EST. He has not made a sound. Earlier today in the backyard there was a squirrel only a few feet away he just looked and did nothing. About 1 hr ago (9pm) took him for a evening walk, cat from across the street crossed in front of us, no barking, no reaction at all. Can he be mute? I still have no name for him yet, he drank water today, but hardly ate any food, I tried some peanut butter on a treat, he did not touch. I really can't image what was done to him, by whomever owned him before. Currently I just call him Mr. Pooch, and I have fallen in love with my little one. Thanks again, Ed |
Hi Ed & Welcome to YT ! Where did this little guy come from ? He may be missing his family & is why he's trying to escape & not eating. As for him not eating,, yorkies can become Hypoglycemic if they don't eat so it's important to get him to eat something. You can give him boiled boneless skinless chicken & white rice, mine like steamed brocolli, green beans & PURE canned pumpkin, apple & bananas. NO pork or turkey dark meat, very lean beef is ok as well. Best to go to a pet store & get some good quality food. Glad you have a vet appt as he might not be eating due to mouth/tooth pain. As for the cat & squirrel, he may just not be interested in them & it's possible he lived with a cat before so he's just cat friendly. If you are worried he could escape out the front door, I would be putting a baby gate there. Also don't use a collar for walking but instead use a harness & the step-in harness is the best as other harnesses can put pressure on his trachea just like a collar AND yorkies Do Not like to sleep alone so if he can't sleep in your bed then at least put his crate in your room & be sure to put something cushy for him to sleep on & mine like to be covered up at night with their blankies. |
One more thing, he's most likely not mute and after he becomes more comfortable with his new human/s & surroundings he will find his voice & you might regret it, lol. Looking forward to hearing how his vet visit goes & how he comes along in the days/weeks ahead. If you think you love him now, just wait till you really get to know each other. You will wonder how you ever lived without a yorkie in your life & will most likely NEVER again be without one.;) |
Mr. Pooch Thanks all for your wonderful replies. I'm taking him to the VET today at 7:30am EST. I will report in tonight on what she says and did. Thanks again all and have a great day. Mr. Ed & Mr. Pooch |
I would try the boiled boneless chicken cutlets and rice, most all dogs cannot resist chicken, just to get him to eat something, I would not recommend this as a steady diet as there is not much nutrients in rice. If you are feeding kibble try sprinkling a little grated Parmesan cheese on top of it, the smell usually gets their taste buds going. You can also try to moisten the kibble with a little water, or UNSALTED NO ONION added canned chicken broth, this will soften the food the chicken will add yummy flavor to the food. As lillymae suggested he may have problems with teeth causing him pain. Yorkies are notorious picky eaters. Pet Supplies, Pet Smart and PetCo usually have small sample bags of kibble, you can get several varieties and see which one he likes. As bad as a dog may have been treated his loyalty is ALWAYS with his owner, that was the only life he knew, he could be missing that owner another reason he is not eating well. I would not worry about no reaction to a cat or squirrel, this little guy is going through so many adjustments, he is confused, scared, WHO ARE YOU and WHERE IS MY MOMMA or DADDY. If his coat is dirty and matted this is also making him uncomfortable to. Good that you are taking him to the vet today. |
Just checking for a vet update. Hope all is well. |
Good news. Mr. Pooch's visit to the VET was excellent. He had no problems besides needing to gain a few pounds. He is completely transformed with his bath and being groomed. I really love the little guy. The vet did say to wait a few or so for the neutering, once he's gained weight. He even wanted to play a little last night. Thanks all, Ed & Mr. Pooch |
My heart is singing, so happy the vet gave him a clean bill of health, and he has gotten a much needed bath and grooming, now wanting to play absolutely WONDERFUL. Remember "baby steps" with this little guy and ALWAYS have him on a leash when he is NOT in your yard. He is NOT going to transform into the yorkie he was meant to be over night, it all takes time. The most fantastic thing is that you have already fallen in love with this little guy and he will feel that love and lose some of that fear he has. Just have patience, speak in soft tones and never scold harshly. He is in a new learning process with you as his new owner, he now has to learn YOUR WAY of him doing things, and that is not an over nighter for him. Is he eating and drinking water? Please keep us updated on his new life with you. |
so happy to hear that things are looking up, what age did the vet think he was and may i ask how you came to acquire Mr Pooch |
you mentioned that this is your first yorkie, this is something you might not know because i did not with my first one and since you are walking him it's best for these little ones to use a harness to attach the leash to, don't attach it to the collar because you don't want to pull at their neck and if you ever have to lift him off the ground in a hurry like say a big dog is approaching off leash you don't want to do it by the neck. Also make sure you get a little name tag with your phone number on it for his collar especially since you said he likes to escape. I know it can be overwhelming with all the things to think of, i am on my 5th yorkie in 30 years and still keep learning new things. |
lillymaeI'm not real well-versed in the nuances of ok/not ok food. Why is turkey not good for our little ones? I know the biggies like onions, garlic, chocolate, etc. I always appreciate knowing how best to care for Piper (who, by the has been getting FreshPet mixed with kibble). Thank you so much! |
Mr. Pooch, is still not eating well. I cooked some chicken breast and cut it up in the Science Diet, he picked out the chicken and ate it. Still not eating treats; I tried peanut butter on a dog biscuit and on a spoon, would not touch it. I could just really give the person who abandon him a good old military DI chewing out. The vet said he about 21/2 yrs. old. I went for a oil change and their was a young lady their asking if anyone wanted a dog. The other three customers and myself all said no. Then she goes away and comes back with Mr. Pooch, the others all had dogs, but he melted my heart. I live in a college town and sometimes the students are so irresponsible about pets. They get them, don't proper care for them and leave and leave the pet. Our local shelter this past Christmas was begging the community to come in an adopt and all fees were waived because so many poor babies had been left. I and the young lady agreed for me to take him the next day, she literally throw him at me and almost left her pocketbook in the haste to leave him. Yet, Mr. Pooch still loved her. We human beings could learn so much about love from our pets. I feel he and I are bonding, he's starting to follow me around the house. But I have to be careful, received a package and forgot he was behind me, and yes thank God the mailman got him before he could take off. I would be terrified as their are now wild coyotes roaming our area. Everyone, thanks again for all the kind words and encouragement. I friend is suppose to come over help me take the picture and upload it to this wonderful site. God bless all, Ed and Mr. Pooch |

Ed with his escape tendencies did you get him a tag yet for his collar, you can make them right while you wait at the large pet store chains. We had a scare with my Lola on Sunday, i was out in front of house and my husband did not realize the garage door was up and he was painting near our inside door to the garage and left if open a crack, well Lola got out, luckily i came in just a few moments later and asked where's Lola since she had been watching me through the door just moments before. What a scary feeling especially since my leg is currently in a brace and i can not move fast. The first thing we do is run to the street because if she is on the other side i don't want to call her and have her come running into traffic, so my husband went to the street and i got a squeaky toy, then when there was no cars coming we called her and squeaked the toy, she came running from the back yard all excited from her adventure and to get her toy, she was happy while both our hearts were beating out of control, then i noticed her collar was still off from the bath i had given her a few hours before and i felt guilty for not putting it right back on, so LOL you can see even after 30 years of having yorkies how quickly something could have gone wrong. I hope you don't mind me sharing my stories I just want you to learn from my mistakes:D |
Did you have your vet check this pup for a microchip? Someone may be looking for him. They get matted quickly when out on their own, so please don't assume he has been neglected. You really should look for his owner before saying you rescued him. Please!! Think this way.....he could be your pet who got out. Would you want someone to just keep him? |

Happy to hear this little one has a home with someone who is clearly taking good care of him. To the OP: Welcome to YT .... I apologize for not reading thoroughly. |
Hi everyone, I'm happy to report Mr. Pooch, ate a full breakfast of Science Diet dry and Royal Canin can Yorkie loaf. But the greatest news that I have, is that my roommate (Mr. 96yr. old healthy Dad-he's stilling driving and has a lady friend) is warming up to Mr. Pooch. While I was doing the dishes Pooch was in the room with Dad while he read the paper, and Dad said that he liked Mr. Pooch. Coming from my Dad whom I sometimes call Scrooge, is the best compliment ever. Everyone, my heart beams with joy from all your wonderful messages and encouragement. I'm awaiting my neighbor to see if we can do a picture and then get it uploaded. Have, a great day, Mr. Ed, Mr. pooch and Dad |
but Lady Jane actually is correct there is no way in knowing if the person that easily handed this pup over is the original or rightful owner, in situations like this it is probably not a bad idea to double check ownership. if the pup came from a bon a fide rescue like Yorkie Haven you would know they would have done this, but from some gal on the street your just don't know. Until Linda posted this questions i never thought about it that way but her question made me think that she was questioning more about where the gal that handed him over got the dog as opposed to where Ed did |
Don't ever ever ever let Mr Pooch outside alone---not even for three seconds. Coyotes are clever and stealthy and have been know to observe their target and it's habits and are just waiting for that moment target steps out door and to grab it. Birds of prey do the same thing; you must be ever-vigilant ground level and also look to the sky. Piper dashed out on me just the other morning; it was snowing like crazy (she's not keen on the heavy, wet stuff) and I didn't figure on her split second sprint straight to the middle of the street and then disappearing among houses and cars and bushes and the dang snow and I couldn't see cuz my glasses were all wet...I managed to grab her when her busy little beak got the better of her (thank goodness). No kidding, these little ones are not unlike hyper-active, curious, mobile toddlers; can't trust 'em, can't take your eyes off em, and you'll never love anything like you do these guys!! |
