red legs In order to correct a fault, we do not do this by breeding another fault to correct a fault. Remember, a big part of breeding is common sense!! If the gold is too light, breeding to a "red legged" Yorkies will give you more pups with color faults, it will not give you a line of rich gold pups...breeding dogs is not merely a blending of genes. It is not like taking a blob of white painting and adding drops of color until you achieve the correct shade you want..that works for artists, not dog breeders. If a color is too light or too dark, you correct it by breeding to a stud with a correct color. You do not take a pale silver bitch and breed to a male as black as coal..that will NOT give you blue...a light gold bred to red will not give you correct tri-colored gold..two faults or two wrongs do not produce a right..and folks is basis dog breeding 101. If these things were not true, then order to correct an underbite we would breed to a dog with an overbite and expect pups with a correct bite..the only way to correct a bad bite or bad color is to breed to correct color or bite. |
Ps PS...and we can use incorrect coat or color in a breeding program..and we may get some great pups, but you will find the fault will show up again, might not be in the next generation..as a rule it skips to the 3rd...that why a person can buy a pup from two silk coated parents and get cotton from that offspring...one of the grandparents was cotton...and I agree, you keep the faults you can live with..color and coat is not life threathening. |
a red leg from my understanding is a throw back, Ive never heard of a litter of redlegged puppies. In any breeding you can produce modified coats in different degrees and pure silk coat in the same litter because of a throw back which is no different. Breeding silk to silk can throw back most anything as well, perhaps the odds are less I dont believe there is anything written to support either or to guarantee that every single time you will get pure silk. Pat then what youre suggesting breeding Mercedes is a risk in coat texture she is silk, mom was silk, the modified is on the dad side and prevelant in the so-sweet line. There is a chance her kids may be modified but I bred her to a pure gun metal blue silk, I want dark kids not tan/silver so I chose to do it. If this is the only fault at risk then I am jumping off the bridge into the water. Breeding Hannah to someone that is both lighter/darker intermingled in color not pure in his gold/tan markings, eye rims, etc then I think its worth a try. Oh and BTW she came from a silk to silk breeding. An example is summer/ransoms dad he has two colors in his markings and has zero "no" black eye rim, those are faults yet he had no problem championing. just my 2 1/2 cents |
question What I am saying is...breed the fault you can accept. I can accept a color or texture fault over a structure fault or health fault. Yes, two silk parents can produce a cotton pup, because most likely one of the grandparents is cotton...but when you have silk grandparents also, then you are going to rarely see cotton..you may get a silk that is not a good a textured silk as ideal, but those cotton, wooly coats will be gone. If you have silk grandparents and parents..then you take a silk pup from these dogs and breed it to cotton aren't we are taking a step backways? I would take a cotton bitch and breed it to a silk male. I would not breed a silk bitch to a cotton male. Just when a breeder is on the verge of stepping through a doorway of improvement, they step back. RED LEG is very different to me... If you breed a "red legged" Yorkie you may not see any in that litter or you may see one..but the gene remains..each time you breed from those pups you have no clue when it will pop up again. Mother Nature shoves so many unexpected things at us, I perfer not to give her any help in the that way.LOL I would not hestiate to breed a Yorkie who is too light or too dark..I would not breed one with a grow that will not grow..now you have introduced two major faults..no coat and wrong color. People expect a long coat..it may not be correct in color, but the coat is a major point in being drawn to a Yorkie IMO..JMO LOL Only my opinion LOL |

From reading this thread I think Sophie Kate might be a red leg Yorkie. Her legs are very goldish red toned and her hair is wirey and doesn't grow very fast (exception would be the hair on her head and face). Thats cool, Sophie Kate is a pet and not used for Breeding. We love her just the way she is. I keep her face and body cut very short but have noticed her face and top of her head seems to grow faster. Good information and OP your puppy is very cute. |

hmmmm? My little Lucy has the very thin, wirey hair that seems to be related with the "red-legged" yorkies..... however she does not have any deep red color. Her hair is very short. Very thin and feels super wirey. I think it is really cute, but I am just wondering if that is normal. |
My Sams hair is CRAZY :eek: ;) He'll be 7 mnths on the 24th and the hair on his body and legs is between an inch and 2 inches...but there is very little on his head except but under his chin...he has a white beard :p I'd love for it to grow a little longer so people will quit saying "he's not a yorkie" but I love him just the same :) |
Romeo is handsome!! I've never seen a red legged yorkie before reading this thread. SO much to I haven't heard of till YT. Amazing. |

I am not sure if yours is a red legged Yorkie, but I sure would like to know since it looks like the 4.5 month old I have. She started loosing her long coat, the ear hair isn't growing either. Her legs lost their hair and have more hair growing in, but not growing very fast. Her coat is pretty thin. Did yours loose a lot of hair too? I don't remember the other Yorkie puppy ever loosing it's hair like this. |
