I have never heard of that term either?? Coarse hair just does not grow, it breaks off.

Not trying to offend anyone -- but is a "red legged" little Yorkie that is a little off standard - especially with hair that won't grow - and not one that should be bred?

Just asking!

I know my little guy is pet quality and probably shouldn't be bred - I think his ears may be a "little large" - his hair color not quite standard - and, he'll probably be a little larger than a Yorkie should be.

Do most of you breed your Yorkies regardless of their meeting Yorkie standards or do you just breed them anyway?

I remember we were studying this when Julie (Julz) had two little red pups about 7.5 months back. It was stated that the coloring of a 'red legged' yorkie would keep the rich color which seems to fade out of a breeding stock.

An experienced breeder will breed a red legged yorkie to darken the color in the puppies produced......the other dog of the pair has to complement so that the puppies stay within the standard.

I have heard that they can bring desired "color" back into the line. There really isn't much info at all out there on this subject.

I meant to say "color back into a line" not "the line".

its been said but I have yet to find anything in writing to validate that a red leg will perfect the coloring so I have a little gal to see if this is true or not.
a website about a year ago boasted her red leg gal produced her 3 champions, I can no longer find the site, so who knows.

I have read on this forum hundreds of times by breeders to "breed to improve the breed and use only breed quality females"

From my understanding on this thread... red legged yorkies do NOT grow the full coat, it is a fault in their genes correct? so why would you breed a red legged yorkie to see what happens basically (see if you can breed the red leg fault out of her?) it really doesn't make sense to me.

I remember reading when someone wanted to breed a yorkie with a small underbite, and everyone jumped in saying "no" don't do it... you don't want to breed a yorkie with faults, even though this person was going to breed with a normal bite yorkie...

I just am trying to understand what nonstandard qualities are ok to breed and what are not?

From my understanding there is also something written regarding standard coat (silky, long ect) and a red legged yorkie seems to have a course coat that doesn't grow...

So then would it be ok to breed a cottony coat as long as you breed with a silky coat? a slight roach back as long as you breed with a straightline? a small overbite or underbite as long as it is with a normal bite dog?

If this is true, why do we read so many times when a person comes on the forum asking if their dog is breed quality do we see so many breeders saying "not in my opinion because they have this or that flaw?"

I have to say that all the yorkies on this thread are cute, pet standard- but are they really breed standard?

I guess my main reason for this question is I bred my cottony coat yorkie with a silky coat, and people were telling me on this forum that I should not breed a yorkie who isn't considered the "standard"....

I am not trying to upset anyone, just trying to understand....

There are many many faults like and underbite, overbite, ears not set right, not the right markings, not all black toe nails, too big, and so forth. Anything that makes it not the "perfect" Yorkie is considered a fault. It is hard to find a perfect Yorkie though, so join the crowd :)

I totally understand what you are saying. Like I said, there really isn't much info out there. I am definetly not trying in any way to sound like I know what I am talking about...I only could find the least amount of information I could imagine on this subject. As mentioned by another member, she is going to try it and see if it is true. Once she does, hopefully we will all know a little more about it.

Thanks for the reply Julz, so there really isn't a whole lot of information regarding red legged yorkies, so no one really knows if there are also more health risks than the standard yorkie? I do know that blue yorkies also have skin/coat issues, but I don't know much regarding them either.

I was just wondering what is considered ok to breed and what is not (in reference to not being 'standard")
