Please advise my Mia was spayed yesterday morning vet prescribed Remedyl to take with food around 10pm. Because she refused to eat anything and she didn't seem to be in great deal of pain I didn't give it to her. Suddenly this morning about 4:30 she started walking at round whining quite loud. I got scared tried giving her Remedyl with cream cheese and she took it. Could be possible she had that much pain now 20 hrs after surgery. I'm concerned |
Whining After taking Remedyl about 3 hours ago she's doing better the whining still there but is not as constant . I was hoping Remedyl would have taken the whining away, but I guess that's not how it works Still barely eating just drinking a little bit of water. She voiced yesterday but not today. We took a look at the incision in case there was something going on, but it looks fine. I just don't understand why she is in so much pain that even with Remedyl still shows she has pain. |
I personally wouldnt take the whining as just pain. She may be sensitive in the areas of her spay and her mouth. Just like us even when we take pain meds. We can still feel it , just not as bad. If she is up walking around i would say it prob isnt too painful. Has she had a bowel movement yet? One of my little dogs.. A jack russell/rat terrier is extremley whiney after any surgery. Even after getting his teeth cleaned. Untill the anesthesia wears off completely his is very very whiney . I dont think he likes the way it makes him feel. Plus he is more vocal over anything he doesnt like. But you know your dog best:) so if you think its crying from pain, i would put a call into your vet clinic. They may be able to give her something else to help calm her and ease the pain a little more. Have you tried canned food of boiled chicken or something real tastey? Sometimes they are pretty picky when recovering from surgery. |
Whining Yes she had a bowel movement yesterday afternoon after coming back from vet. She also voided yesterday, but not today even though she's had water. I've tried everything. She likes low sodium ham the best so that she a little bit this morning . I will call vet later this morning I'm waiting to see if she voids before calling so I could give vet a full report. Thank you for all you advise, it makes me feel better. |
It takes about 24 hours for most dogs to bounce back from spay surgery. I'd give the pain medication as recommended, because they can still feel pain even if they don't show it. And try to transition her back to her regular food--cream cheese and ham, although tasty, might upset her stomach and might contain too much fat. Boiled chicken breast is healthier, and she might like the broth from the boiled chicken (prepared with no added salt) to drink as well. |
Whinning Her normal diet is boil chicken with nothing added an no fat along with her Keebler. Last night she wasn't eating at all not even the boars head low sodium Ham and fat free cheese. When you see them in pain you change temporarily their diet with the goal of getting some type of nutrition in them. |
That's rough. I wish I could offer advice. Cookie's complaining seemed to be more about not being able to go outside or go in the living room and jump up on the couch versus pain. |
Buy some baby food (chicken, turkey, beef) and see if that will entice her. Many years ago I had a Maltese puppy that had a hypoglycemic episode and that's what the vet told me to feed her. It's fine for a short-term food. Sometimes getting them to eat is far more important than what they are eating. |
One more thing: Jezebel did not bounce back quickly. She seemed uncomfortable for about 4-5 days. Slow recovery does not necessarily mean that something is wrong. I would, however, call the vet and tell them what is going on and see if they have alternatives for pain control. |
Thank you Yorkiefan and Jezebel for your concern and advise! Yes I had bought baby food as well and it didn't work. I did call vet they told me if i took her today they were going to give her pain shot. They advised me to wait until tomorrow. The thing is I finally was able to give her med at 4:55am with some food and is once a day. I think her level of pain at that time was too high. I ask the tec vet was not available, if i had to wait until same time to give it to her again and she said no I could give it to her earlier to avoid the high level of pain to comeback. I really hope that works! |
How is Mia doing this evening? I hope your girl is starting to get closer to normal, alvarezb. |
Alternative to cones Mia is doing much better. She's finally coming around eating better and the whining is now just a little whimpering from time to time. I'm so grateful you and some of the other YT members remember Mia and have been keeping in touch through all these stressful days. I was feeling quite desperate last night and today for part of the day. I hope she continues to improve. Thank you so much! |

Alternative to cones Yes, we're going through that awful feeling of not letting her play rough which is how she likes to play. But there are things you can't control now that she's feeling better she runs everytime she hears a noise outside or sees something . How can you stop that quick unexpected reaction. As far as the incision I've already cought her trying to pick at it lifting the onesie. We're constantly watching but when you fall sleep ? We might use a soft cone if anything just to sleep . I just feel sorry because I know she'll hate it. What did you used on Cookie? |
