Looking for a harness Hi All, I'm looking for a harness for our new puppy Mia, 3 month, 3lb, holy terror. Has anyone used The Susan Lanci step in harness or the Buddy Belt harness? The Buddy Belt looks like it might be good but doesn't look like it's padded. Any suggestions appreciated. Larry |

I would wait initial she's an adult to purchase so you don't invest so much money into it. I did resale my Emma's puppy version of her buddy belt when she out grew it so that's an option. Padding may not be necessary but it's a soft leather and you can meSure so it's not too uncomfortable for your puppy. |
I was searching the forums for harness info today and saw a lot of people who loved the Buddy Belts... They mentioned that certain colours were softer than others... I'll try to find/post the thread here... |

You will probably go through 2 or 3 harnesses before she is full grown. Both harness brands, Buddy Belt and Susan Lanci, are very nice. The Buddy Belt has a little room to adjust and grow in each size, while the Susan Lanci ones have to be almost perfectly fitted. Most of the SL have velcro, while the BB has a single buckle. Padding: I know a leather harness does not sound comfortable, but think of it like a very soft moccasin shoe. The Natural edition of the BB is raw leather on the underside, but all the others are finished, very soft leather. Some of the leather colors are even softer than others. There are also harness liners available for people who want them. My boys wear classic Black daily, one of the colors that starts out the stiffest. |
My Petco now carries a line of small (tiny) dog harnesses. I would go less expensive while she is still tiny and growing but once she stops I would go with the buddy Belt. The leather holds up really well. I had tried the soft hArness and my dog slipped out of them easily. Maximo on this board sells them and she helped me with sizing. Since we're talking about harnesses, has anyone tried/evaluated a figure eight harness? Those are the smallest ones, and that have the narrowest bands(?) at the shops near me... Not too expensive and was hoping they'd work until she was grown and I got her a BB... |
Ruger has had a Buddy Belt since about 5 months old. He's now 15 months and still fits fine with 2 more buckle holes. It's very soft leather and doesn't bind. Gets softer with use. I think this will be the only harness he will need. Well worth the extra money because it's made to last. Highly recommend. Check with Kristin here on YT. |

I use the XS puppia harness. I didn't like the nylon step in harnesses. I hear so many great things about the buddy belts, that would be the next one I would buy if I switched from the puppia |
I have a Susan Lanci harness. The one I have is Velcro though. I would only use this on one of my dogs as Velcro makes me nervous. i'll only use it on my dog who I know wouldn't run if he someone got loose from the harness. Top Paw also makes great harnesses especially for tiny dogs. |
1 Attachment(s) I haven't tried the Lanci or Buddy Belt harnesses, but I was recently turned on to the ChokeFree harness, which I absolutely love. It was designed by a NASA scientist and is amazing in its simplicity and functionality. But as some of the others say, it might be a little pricey to buy before she gets full grown. I looked up the buddy belts and I agree they do look really good. Do they run big or small? It looks like some of the half sizes overlap a little with the size under it. For example a size 2 is for dogs 2-4 lbs and a size 2.5 is for dogs 3-5 lbs. the girth for the 2 is 10-12 and for the 2.5 it's 11-13. So if my dog is 3.5 pounds and has an 11 inch girth would I get a 2 or 2.5? |

Make sure the measurement is a snug measurement, against the body without adding any extra room. That is how to determine the correct size. Buddy Belts hug the body without being tight or loose. There is some room to adjust with the 5 belt buckle holes. |
