New to YT!
 
Hi everyone! I am new to Yorkie Talk and would like to introduce myself! My name is Jenny and I've had T-Bone for 3 days now. He is such a sweet boy! He's slowly adjusting to his new home and hasn't cried very much even on the first night in his new crate. :animal36

My main concern is his diet/eating habits. Before arriving to my home, he was a hearty eater, gobbling up Eukanuba dried kibble mixed with some canned wet food. Since he has arrived, he has rejected all kibble and wet food. I tried to force feed him a little wet food but he started to get a bit defensive and I stopped forcing him to eat. I've been left to feed him steamed chicken breast with plain white rice which he loves very much. I can't seem to wean him off the chicken/rice and onto the kibble/wet food.
The only other thing he truly enjoys eating is the Nutrical which I've been consistently feeding him at least 3x/day.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get him to try the dog food? I can't imagine that feeding him chicken/rice completely satisfies all his nutritional needs. Any advice will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Congrats on the new furbaby and welcome to YT...Im sure your baby will be fine Im sure he is just nervous about his new home and he Im sure knows you think he is going to starve so he waits on the YUMMY chicken:)

Thanks! :) I've already perused this site for hours and there is so much valuable information! My neck hurts from sitting in front of my computer so long.

I hope T-Bone is just adjusting to his new home. He'll be visiting the vet for the first time in a few more days.

Hi! Welcome. I think you are going to have to slowly reduce the chiken for the kibble always feed them together. It will get to the point were he only will have kibble and he might not want to eat it at first but when that hunger hits he defenitely will. If you keep feeding chiken it is going to get harder to change as time goes by. :thumbup:

Welcome to YT! I agree he will eat when he is hungry, but personally I might would baby him a little for a few more days. Mine will eat kibble from my hand sometimes when they don't feel like using their bowl. I feed them Science Diet's Natures Best. Since the day i put it down, they never touched a bite of any other food, they love it. My niece's finicky dog ate some when we were over there, she had never fed him dog food. The nutrical is very good for him, too.

I will certainly try my best to wean him. It's so hard to watch him go hungry but I know it's better for him in the long run.

I'm new too. I just joined YT on Sunday. (Somewhere in the general discussion is the thread I started "New & in Iowa" - if you want to read about my 2 yorkie babies.)

What a cutie you have! ;)

I wouldn't worry about feeding chicken right now - actually my vet thinks it's best to feed fresh meat, vegetables and such with added supplements. We use Flint River Ranch which my dogs just prefer over anything else and the food is high nutritional product with natural ingredients.

Jenny, welcome to you and T-Bone. Glad you decided to join. I would continue the Nutrical. I am not an alarmist, and don't want to unduly worry you, but these tiny babies can get into trouble real fast by refusing to eat. The problem with tiny dogs is that they don't carry enough fat reserves on their body to "carry them through" those spells when they are not eating well. If their blood sugar drops too low they can have a hypoglocemic episode. Adult dogs can go a little longer without eating, but I would be very concerned if one of my babies went for more than 6 to 8 hours without eating.

I would not try to force feed T-Bone, that usually doesn't work with our strong willed little terror of terriers, but I would encourage him -- try sitting on the floor with T-Bone and pretend to eat his food, dogs are funny that way, if their pack leader thinks it's ok, then hey, it must be ok. Also try to tease him into licking bites off your finger. Sometimes the biggest challenge is just getting them started.

When I first got Precious she didn't really eat. I would gice her that nutrical stuff. That thick syrup stuff that you would give to a teacup pup to help raide their blood sugar. I wouldn't worry at all! By the way!! WELCOME! I just joined and I'm addicted! You'll love it!

Welcome wahat a cutie you have. he looks pretty tiny so I would fee him what he will eat. cali was 1 lb when I got her and a finicky eater. She had 2 hypoglcemic episodes from not eating for over 8 hours. I would give him the nutrical but feed him what he wil eat until he is bigger.JMO.

I'm so glad I joined YT! I feel so welcome already! Thanks for all the replies and advice so far!

Update on T-Bone: I tried to feed him just the wet/dry food but he licked a little bit off and then walked away. I then mixed in a little bit of chicken but he didn't eat it (probably b/c it was combined with the other stuff). I've been feeding him his nutri-cal about every 2 hours to make sure he doesn't develop hypoglycemia. He's currently taking a nap but if he doesn't eat his food in another hour or so, I think I'll succumb and just feed him his chicken and rice. <sigh> :rolleyes:

yorkiesmiles: welcome to YT as well!! I'll be sure to look up your posting of your cuties.

patti: he is pretty tiny! :) 1 lb and 14.4 ounces as of yesterday. Luckily, his weight has been relatively stable since arriving to his new home (ie: not losing weight).

All: i'll keep you updated on his progress if you are interested. Thanks again!

The one thing that hasn't been mentioned (I don't think) is playing with the food a little. Pretending like you're eating it is a good suggestion but also try tossing it around. Tatum did the same thing with not eating until I tossed one on the floor and she ran after it to get it. I had to do that a few days and then she would only eat out of my hand and then finally from the bowl. I agree that they won't starve themselves but you also have to watch out for the low blood sugar. Just try not to cave in and feed something you don't intend to keep him on. It will be harder to change it later. Good luck!

that's a great idea. i started to throw his kibble around and he chased it a bit and even put a few in his mouth. But of course, he spit them right back out and continued to chase them around. At least that's a start! I'll keep on trying this method! <sigh> The poor little guy must think I don't love him because his tummy must be hungry by now. :(

When I first got Cooper he wouldn't eat either. I had to feed him out of my hand far awhile. Your furbaby will come around. Welcome to the site. Cooper still likes to be feed by hand I thinks (know) he likes the attention and me being right there as he is eating. Is he spoiled or what. :p :rolleyes:
