Dental chews- safe? Hi-are dental chews safe for yorkies and if so, which ones? I have hesitated buying bc I thought I read on here it could cause issues, but everywhere I keep seeing how it is great for their teeth. Experienced Yorkie parents and breeders, please let me know what you use? Thank you in advance! |
We use CET veggie chews and just started buying bully sticks. I buy the 12" sticks and cut them up smaller. A 4" stick lasts Mario about 3-4 hours and he often has to take a few hour break in there. He gets a veggie stick once a day and a bully stick will be no more than twice a week. The bully sticks can have bacteria on them that a pups system can handle if they don't get them every day. |
Oh yes, if you go with bully sticks, always wash your hands after you handle them just to be extra safe. Pups digestion and ours are a bit different. They can handle the bacteria that may be on them better. I get ours from the local feed store since I want a source I know. |
OH ok. thanks!! CET veggie sticks. Maybe I should just stick with the CET ones instead of bully sticks then? Bc two seconds after she eats, her tongue usually ends up in either my mouth, hubs or the kids LOL |
Mine love the Tropiclean dental chews. They also like bully sticks. Diana |
We use Merrick Bones for our 5 month puppy. We were told not to give her greenies because she could choke on them and they don't digest them properly either. Merrick is all natural and made with no bi-products. |
If you decide on the bully sticks, make sure you get the odorless ones. The regular ones will STINK up your place and anything that it touches!!!! I give my two the bullies. Keeps their teeth oh so clean! |
ooh great, thanks everyone! |
I buy Red Barn made in USA bully sticks, read label carefully Red Bard has been selling some made in Paraguay, from the little I read it's ok as long as they are not made in China. I get my bullies from my local feed store. The label doesn't read odorless but they don't smell and I have a GOOD sniffer lol. |
I think I might just stick w a usa made dental chew? Billy sticks come with so many warnings from my yt friends LOL |
My latest CET Veggie chews says made in vietnam. CET does come highly recommended here, but so does made in the USA. One thing to double check on, just because it says made in the USA on the package does not mean the ingredients come from the USA. It could just mean package in the USA. Deceptive, yes. Legal, sadly, yes. You really have to research on the net to know or call and inquire. For example, this CET Veggie package states: Mfd for and dist in USA by Fabrique and has a Fort Worth address, but below all that it states Made in Vietnam. |
I'm really afraid of bully sticks or any raw hides. Ruger gets Milk Bone brushing chews. Been tested by the VOHC to help reduce tarter. |
We like Oinkies. They're rolled pig skins. They're made by Hartz which doesn't bother me and I've been using them for years. I find them at target. |
I have heard that Greenies and raw hides are very bad for dog health. Scottie had tried bully sticks when he was a puppy, as the dog trainer requested we bring one during classes. He seemed to get sick every single time he got to chew it, whether 5 min or 10 min of chewing. The bully stick we got was 100% natural with no preservatives. Anyway, no bully sticks for Scottie. Side note: I was surprised to find out and thought it's gross/funny they're actually a bull's privates (I know, how immature of me..). So now, he gets to chew on Himalayan cheese dog chews and halved antlers (he likes the marrow and the full antlers are too hard for him to get to the marrow). Here's a vid of him going hard at the cheese chew (fwd to the end around 0:25 for a good laugh lol...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJn9EXDIS5g Oh, I've also seen dried duck feet that Scottie hasn't tried yet. I have a feeling he'd love it. |
Oh my goodness, thanks so much everyone! I started with merrick bones and we will see how it goes! |
