Ball driven Yorkies I was wondering if anyone else has a yorkie who loves their ball? I jokingly say that Capone "lives" for the ball. I have read online that this has alot to do with the dog's prey instinct, some dogs inherit this trait where others do not. I know these instinct are very strong in retrievers or other working dog breeds, but I wanted to know if anyone else's furbabies are as obsessed withplaying fetch with their ball as mine is? |
Mario initially would retrieve NOTHING. No interest whatsoever. Then came "bear bear" the kong felt knot bear. He loves that thing, and will fetch it for long periods. Other toys, I think he just studies the aerodynamics of them as they fly through the air, then he studies my efficiency at fetching and cleaning them all up. |
Haha,I can relate from every other small dog ive had would just look at me like I was crazy if I attempted to play fetch with them. Capone only likes squeaky balls (preferably bouncy squeaky balls). He loves pulling everysingle toy out of the toy box but doesn't seem to have the same enthusiasm when it come to putting them back up. |
My furbaby is obsessed with her purple squeaky ball it's the first thing she runs to get when she wakes up. She will play fetch non stop for hours,as long as I'm willing to. Also the minute I stop playing she lies down with the ball and pouts! Silly girl she's so full of energy. |
Max loves to play fetch but that is probably because he gets a treat every time he fetches it. He will actually reward himself. I am not in the mood to play, he will fling the ball across the room himself, go fetch it, walk to his food bowl with the ball, drop it and get a piece of food! |
Lexi is a ball lover. Her little green ball is her favorite. Anytime my feet are standing in one place for one second, the ball is being dropped for me to kick or throw. If I sit down, she brings the ball. She will set the ball right beside me, then stare at me until I throw it. If I kick it she will retrieve it so fast, it's like we are playing soccer and she's a very good goalie. She really loves her bouncy balls. |

When we throw a toy or a ball, they look at us as if to say... "that was dumb, now you have to go get it!!!" I wish they would fetch. It's great exercise! Lol! I have mean girls stuck in my head. "Stop trying to make fetch happen, it's not gonna happen." :p |
Sophie is crazy for what use to be my kids small soccer ball . When she's playing with it she's in her own little world she doesn't pay attention to anything else around her |
A bit off topic, but I used to have a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog (105lbs). His favorite ball to play with was a bowling ball LOL. He would roll it around then spend hours licking inside the finger holes *bleah* |

I had given up on Mario fetching, but somehow we stumbled upon "bear bear". Fetch for us is a vital training tool as well, so I was wracking my brain trying to come up with a way, until I had all but given up. He will also fetch his stuffed penguin now. Both have squeakers in them. Not sure why he will get those but nothing else, but heck, I am just glad we found something he will fetch. |
O-B-S-E-S-S-E-D that sums it up! Deuce is obsessed with playing fetch with a ball but he will play with other toys that will fly through the air except a frisbee. When he gets the ball he squeaks it and pushes it around, shakes it and sometimes throws it and then rolls over with it in his mouth and plays with it for a while and then runs back for another go of it. He likes when we fake throw it somewhere in the house or to another level and hide it. He loves hunting it out. We play this game with him everyday from about 3:30 until he eats dinner at around 5. He absolutely expects this every day. It's like he knows how to tell time no matter what day of the week it is. Now that ball or toy gets W-E-T from drool and his face is such a mess. Sometimes we have to switch the toy with another because it's so wet and messy to throw. He's not always happy about the switch but we try to get a good squeaker one to distract him with. He can't wait until the weather gets warmer so we can play in the yard. Here's a little video I did a few years ago. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_dxFnUvD_c |
Beowulf plays fetch with ANY toy doesn't matter:D actually anyTHING I have to try not to toss things in front of him cause he'll think I'm trying to play fetch:rolleyes: |

Nope. No interest at all lol. I am trying to train her to retrieve for her service dog stuff and competition obedience. It's going well, but slow. |
I cannot get Cooper really interested in anything. If I throw something, he looks at it.. then at me like... what? He is terrified of anything that squeaks and tug of war is crazy as far as he is concerned. Strangest little one I've ever had. He is 6 months old, maybe playing will come later? |

"RETRIEVE Dog nose-targets four different objects including a dumbell, on one cue each. DISCUSSION: Most trainers divide dogs into "natural" retrievers, and dogs who don't retrieve. All kinds of harsh methods have been devised to force non-retrievers to retrieve. These methods have turned off more potential dog trainers than any other part of training. Fear not! It is NOT necessary to do nasty things to dogs to produce a reliable retrieve. Even dogs who have never thought to voluntarily pick up a twig or a toy can be taught to enjoy retrieving." The rest is here scroll to the bottom: Training Level THREE A | Mind to Mind Beginer targeting is started here about half way down: http://sue-eh.ca/page24/page26/styled/ |
Yep, I'm using targeting to get her to do it! I've got a reliable send to the dummy. She'll put her mouth on it. Pick it up. But not quite return it to me yet. It's coming along. She has returned it a few times, and we had a party when she did, but it's not reliable yet and then I will have to generalize the behavior to things other than her dummy. |

I wish Scottie was like that. I had to train him to have an interest in the toys I bought him (he wouldn't touch them at first when he was a puppy) and then train more for him to fetch stuff so he would 'exercise' when I'm too lazy to move.. |
I have two yorkies. One who is a ball fetching fool, the other could not care less about toys or balls. Couver LIVES for fetch. I have to cut him off so that he doesn't over exert himself when we play fetch. He also does not share, so we do not play fetch at the dog park because he gets possessive. He knows his sister doesn't want his ball, but he doesn't get that other dogs do not care about it, and he will bite any dog that gets near him during ball time. Luckily we know this is a trigger for him, so we just avoid it :) Khloe on the other hand, has NO interest and very rarely can I get her excited enough to even put a toy in her mouth. It's like she thinks thinks she's above it. It's so funny how different yorkie personalities are! |
Two yorkies here too ...zoey my "oldest" is ball obsessed...while Izzy wants whatever Zoey has and chases HER. There is a stairway near the kitchen leading upstairs. Zoey will run to the top and nudge her ball down .....bouncey , bounce, bounce, bounce , bounce......to me ....trying to cook or do dishes...lol ...trying to teach Izzy to " go get it" and take it back to her sister ...lol! |

Lola loves all balls, you name it small rubber balls, tennis balls, basket balls, footballs, and even my large exercise ball. It's to the point that when I want to exercise with it I have to lock her out of the room, she come running at it head butting it right out of my hands. I attached a short video of her with the exercise ball. If we are in a park or out for a walk and come across kids playing basketball or football she tries so hard to get in the middle of it. They always let her play for a while but of course the ball is to big, I normally have to carry her away while she is looking back and almost crying. One time we were docked on our ski boat and she spotted some guys tossing a football in the water, she dove off the boat and swam so fast out to where they were. She also now dock dives when we toss the ball or toy in the water, she will fetch till the cows come home, never gets tired of it. She is 5 and we keep waiting for her to slow down:D LOL I never had such a ball/toy obsessed little dog. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jj8RTz1dWd4 |
for those of you that have dogs that love balls have you seen the little rubber ones with the spikes that light up when rolled around. We have a lot of them and it is so funny to watch Lola with it, we play inside a lot and it is funny to toss it towards a dark area in the house and then she sees the light flashing and when she picks it up you can see it flashing in her mouth. it's a great toy because it is hard but not to hard and as long as she has played with it and squeaked it has never broken. It also bounces pretty good. I bought mine at a big superstore called Meijer but I know Meijer's is not everywhere so I don't know who else sells them |

Jackson had to be taught. He was not naturally a big fetcher. But now he LOVES it... I've built up his drive enough to play almost anywhere. I use the ChuckIt and he just loves it. Such great exercise. He barks at me to throw the ball lol. But it was not naturally engrained in him- I did use small treats as rewards for bringing it back and it was a somewhat slow process. Now he can even catch frisbees! He'll never be a Border Collie frisbee catching maniac but he enjoys it enough that it's fun for both of us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nIGjuLrkTQ |
