Tape worm? Does anyone know what tape worms look like? Teddy got skinny recently and he eats a lot, always hungry also(ALWAYS) so I started researching why. I know cancer causes weight loss since my London died of it but he has not been throwing up or blood in poop or anything. He's eating normal, drinking normal, very active. So I researched why it could be and tape worms came up. Well he did poop and upon seeing it I see lots of yellow-what looks like grains of rice. No moving or anything. This was just now. But he did have rice the day before so I'm wondering if it's rice or tape worms. He did put a little weight back on, just a tiiiiiny bit. Are the 'worms' supposed to move? Should there be a lot? I took a picture but it's ew gross. |

Link to google search"tapeworm in dog stool" and see if that is what you are seeing: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...+in+dogs+stool |
By the time you see the worm/rice looking thing, it is dead and won't move. My dogs have had tape worms before when they had fleas. Most heart worm preventatives don't cover tape worms (or the last time I checked). |

The "rice" like particles are a sign of tapeworms--they are tapeworm segments. Please confirm with your vet and have your dog dewormed. Here's a good article on tapeworms: Signs of Tapeworm Infection in Dogs | VCA Animal Hospitals |
Take a poop sample to the vet tomorrow and have it confirmed. Max had a tapeworm a couple years ago, eeek! We chose the one pill cure. Here is my thread about our experience: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...tapeworms.html |
Sissy had tapeworms when we got her. I woke up one morning and found "rice" in my bed. ???? We haven't had rice :embarasse:lightbulb. I put the "rice" in a ziplock and off to the vet. The receptionist tried to tell me it wasn't tapeworm so I asked her to show it to the vet and went home. My vet called about an hour later ad asked me to come back amd pick up meds for the tapeworm. Since Sissy had been with us for about a week by then I asked the vet to give me meds for both of them, just in case. 1 pill, negative stool at every check up since then. |
By your description it does sound like tape worm. Usually the segments do not show up every time in the stool so just telling your vet you saw them should be enough to have them give you the right medication. Taking a stool sample is a good idea though because they can check for any other types of worms. Fleas pass tape worm to our pets and in some areas it is just about impossible to keep them totally free of fleas in the summer if they go outside. Just one of those nasty bugs can cause such problems to dogs and cats. |
