Hi I'm new here and could use some advise Hi, my name's Beth, I've never posted but have recently gotten a 2 year old yorkie and could use some advice. I had her spayed yesterday and she's doing well, my concern is she hasn't pooped in 2 days and I'm wondering how long I should wait until I need to be concerned. She seems comfortable enough but as you know animals rarely complain so I need to look out for her and make sure nothing else is going on. Thanks for any advice anyone can give me.:) |
Is she eating and drinking??? I would wait another 24 hours from day 2, if no poop by end of day 3, call your vet. |
Any time they get in there and start moving "innards" around, like they do when the babies have abdominal surgery, the body responds by slowing everything down...that includes "peristalsis" or movement of the intestines that moves poop along.....this is normal, the body's way of allowing any injury or surgery done to the intestines, time to heal before activity starts again. While, spaying has nothing to do with cutting into the intestines/stomach/etc, the body only knows that there has been an assault to this dogs insides, so everything just slows down or stops, to allow those insides to heal....completely normal. She should start to have bm's again when you start to feed her in a day or so post op.... |
Anesthesia and pain meds can reallllly slow things down. Did she go yet? |
It took Duchess about 2 and half days after she was spayed before she pooped too. When she did poop....I did a sort of poopy celebration dance :D Who knew I would be so happy to see some poop?:(:(:( |
Thank You for Input She was spayed Friday, today is Sunday ...so far no poop, eating ok and drinking plenty of water, I'm hoping that maybe between the surgery and pain medicine that she's just a bit bound...she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort so I'll give it another day and see. It's funny to want to see a dog poop, but I don't want her anymore uncomfortable than I've already made her and she's being so sweet about it all.. Thank You for all replies, it's nice to know others understand and have been through this, I'll keep all posted. thanx again Beth |
Oh I hear ya. When my girl had intestinal infection, she had made one big mess before she stopped going number 2 for almost 3 days. I was concerned but the vet assured me that she probably emptied herself pretty good the last time and to wait another day or two before bringing her in is she doesn't go. Lo and behold she went that very night and alot XD yea... I know that feeling when you are actually glad she's pooped ^^; But 2 and a half days sounds about right, when my girl was fixed it took about that long for her to start back up again. |
Happy News Well she did it ...she pooped....haha..funny to be happy over poop but i was a bit worried I hated the thought of her being in distress. The vets office actually called today to see how she was doing and basically said the same thing, between the surgery and meds it could take a few days, plus she hadn't eaten anything the day before so her stomach was pretty empty to start with. It wasn't much but enough to know that she's starting to return to normal. Thanks for all the replies, it's always nice to know others have been through the same and have advice for someone new like myself. Thanks again, Beth :) |

Just a FYI in case you haven't read it elsewhere, a small tsp spoon of 100% pure canned pumpkin always helps if the poop looks bad (soft), it's diarrhea, or if it's constipation. |
