Ear Carriage
 

Hi, I'm new to this forum so any advice would be welcome! I took on a Yorkie puppy from his previous owner a month ago. He was 4 months old when I brought him home on December 8, totally un-house trained, crazy as hell, but really adorable and a great companion for my other Yorkie and Ori cat. Thing is, his ears are still floppy despite me shaving them and taping them periodically. I removed the tapes for a day at a time and his ears remain pricked until they seem to flop again late evening. All my previous Yorkies carried their ears pricked and my current puppy's ears are no different in size or thickness to any others I've had. Are they ever likely to prick permanently? What is your experience? I know it's a matter of preference but I'd like your input all the same.

Hi and welcome. Congrats on your new baby! I had this problem with Presley. We taped and taped, needless to say the struggle was real! I googled and found what worked for us, you take a ceral box cut it a little smaller than the inside of your baby's ear (in the triangle shape of the ear) place it on the inside the ear to make sure it fits well, then take eyelash glue and put that all over the printed side, let it sit a minute, when it gets tacky stick it in the ear and hold it there until it stays. It will stay there several days, when they start to come out use a q-tip with baby oil and they will come right out, repeat this process for 2-3 weeks. Usually it doesn't take that long but I was still struggling with Presley's ears when he was 5 months and my breeder told me I needed to keep them up as much as possible while the cartilage was still forming. I did this and I swear by it! I have had no trouble with his ears since. I also fed him a little bit of cottage cheese to give him extra calcium through the teething processes to aid in the cartilage. This is not how most people do it, but it was so much easier on Presley and me when we were going through that process. That cardboard is a brilliant idea! And eyelash glue seems much more comfortable than tape.

I read the reason the ears go up and down is when the pup is teething. I have no idea if it's true though. Uni has pretty big ears. We didn't tape hers at all, they just went up eventually.

Thank you so much! I have read about this method before but never thought about actually trying it! I will do so today. To be honest, Wilson's teeth are still like needles so I guess it's something to do with this stage of his development. He's a larger type Yorkie but, other than the ears, he's coming on a treat and I suspect he'll have a magnificent long coat like all my other boys!!! :)

5 months old... I'm thinking he's still teething? If so, the calcium is probably still going to his teeth.

Congrats on your new furry member of the family! :D He looks so mischievous in that pic.. lol

He's mischief alright!!! I think my Ori cat, Elliott Michael, suffers the most! Wilson has chased him through the entire place since he arrived over a month ago. Poor cat, he wasn't always so tolerant but he's sort of come round. :cat: My other Yorkie, Mikey, gets no peace whatsoever now. Wilson seems to think he's his mother or something. He lies on top of him in the bed ... or does even worse when I'm not looking ... ;)

I have the opposite problem. My five month old Chocolate's ears went up two days ago. His mother's ears were down and she was so cute, I was hoping his would stay down. I left the hair on, never taping and pet them forward. It's a Yorkie, they do what they want, when they want, in every way. Too funny.
