Thinking about getting a Yorkie but nervous... Good Morning I've been doing a lot of research on yorkies and want to get a male. But I've also read a lot of stories about problem puppies. Potty training, aggressive behavior, ect. I have 4 sons ages 7-13. Any advice if a yorkie would make a good fit to our family? |
A woman nearby breeds unstandard larger yorkies- she has 4 young children of her own, I have never seen such easy going, rough and tumble yorkies. My two yorkies love children and are used to a lot of people but they would not enjoy the type of handling those little pups get. |
HI! I have four boys 7-15 :) We had a maltese for 17 years and when she passed, we waited 2.5 years and got our little girl Ella. She is absolutely the light of our lives. My boys do baby her but we did train her, as well. She is a total joy ! She actually is small compared to our maltese but she loves fetching as much as she loves snuggling. We are used to tiny animals bc we also ave a bunny. Small breeds are definitely fragile though. If your boys aren't used to having tiny pets, then I would suggest the biggest yorkie you can find. and with any breed, in my experience, it is more about personality rather then gender (like kids lol). |

YES! The crate. We trained our maltese and our yorkie both and for us and them, it is like magic. they end up loving and treat it like their bedroom. Reinforce positive behavior with treats. teach the basic commands early and often. socialize. |
If you socialize them early it breaks their fear of unfamiliar things, which is usually where aggressive behavior stems from. As soon as you bring the pup home begin the potty training and be consistent. Don't be lax about it and they won't realize they have the option to be lax about it. I have 3 yorkies. 2 regular sized females and one 14lb male. If you have younger children go for a larger one. They are so much more playful and you don't have to stress on their wellbeing as much. The kids can play with them without you having to watch and worry so much. My Toby is an absolute clown. He's definitely got the most personality and all my friends get a kick out him the most. |
A lot of good advise above. I'd just like to add that as important it is to train the pup, it's just as important to train/educate your kids on how to handle the pup as well. |
So they are possible to train alot of people have said their's still pee all over their homes. |
Hi and welcome to YT. Yorkies are awesome little ones! They are head strong and stubborn too, training for some takes a lot of patience and time. I use belly bands on my boy to keep him from peeing in the house, he is basically trained but if the notion hits he will lift his legs on my furniture. Belly bands are a priceless tool to me. The only thing I will stress with your children is that Yorkies are small and do get under feet easily, they are easily injured (or worse) because of their size, I would strongly enforce no rough housing or running in the house with the kids and keeping toys picked up as they will think the toys is theirs. If you do get a Yorkie be prepared they steal your heart quickly! :) |
I have a 14 month old Yorkie (she weighs 2-1/2 pounds) she has not had a potty accident since she was about 7 months old. No.....all Yorkies don't pee all over the house !!! It really depends on how well they are trained ( and how stubborn the individual is). PS....I don't recommend a very tiny Yorkie for children, they are too delicate to roughhouse with and can easily be stepped on or sat on because they are always under foot or jumping on chairs,sofas, etc. All the best with your search for the perfect pup for your family !!! |

As far as aggressiveness...I have not seen this *at all* in any of my 3 yorkies...they are all friendly, loving, open, affectionate, energetic, goofy. My biggest advice to you there would be to *really* talk to your kids about how we are supposed to treat animals/other beings...and be totally honest with yourself as to whether they truly "get it" or not, ya know? In other words, do they see animals as something one can tease/mess with...or are they viewed as precious and vulnerable...? |

What's a belly band |
