I have the same dilemma, I'm a little bit sceptical about a yorkie, hopefully this forums will persuade me :D |
people always told me maltese and yorkies were both challenging breeds to housebreak. we have never had an issue. but we did crate train both. our girl is very petite but doesn't have potty accidents, at all. |
dog My Jojo uses the dog door but if I go somewhere he gets mad and will pee on a dog blanket or his crate. He has spared my furniture so far. He is neutered. Why not rescue a mixed breed. Yorkies are so cute but honestly they aren't the easiest dog. Get a larger one. If the kids drop the little Yorkie it's fatal. Had a friend have that happen. I so glad you will get a dog and teach the children the responsibility of owning a pet. |

The Yorkie, by nature, will not understand or realize it has limitations....it will not survive a football tackle by a 12 year old boy playing football! |
They can be willful when it comes to training, but I have never heard of an aggressive Yorkie. |
:confused:I haven't heard of an aggressive Yorkie either, I think she must be thinking chihuahuas |
At the Canadian National competition for Yorkies I was sitting between two long long time breeders and one asked of me what she referred to as the *big question* What do you tell folks about a Yorkies temperament. I smiled at her and said - well here is my opinion. A well bred Yorkie is first and foremost a terrier. They should be feisty, inquisitive, tend to be barkey, love to chase things - and dig as well. But they are also affectionate and loving and like all dogs to bring the best out in their personalities need to be well socialized. Note - I did not say anything about kids. I know plenty of families with children who have Yorkies - and also families with large dogs n Yorkies. But with a family with young children I would need to be very convinced they have the time energy and dedication to keep their Yorkie safe as he grows up. Oh and Btw with my large breed I don't like families with very young children unless I can be convinced the parents have trained their children around dog behaviour and how to respond to dogs. |
