Am worried about Lacy! Ok, I know I am a new mom and overly protective, but I am worried! Lacy has been extremely hyper and agitated for the last 4 hours. I picked her up several times and cuddled her, and always before, she just cuddled right in and snoozed. The last few hours, she is so restless, she cannot sit still. So I think maybe she needs some water or to go potty and I put her in her playpen, Then she HOWLS and runs around her playpen like crazy. Non stop. 4 hours. Every time I pick her up and hold her, she is extremely restless. She just started medication today for Giardia. Am wondering if the medication is affecting her. I am very stressed. |
Anyone have any idea as to what could be bothering her? |
Lacy's medication is Panicur |
On the medication bottle, it says "Lacy" - Terrier Mix. One more vet that has never heard of a Biewer Terrier. |
Hey, I googled panacur and the side effects are very limited. I would call a 24hr vet, has she calmed down? |
Could she just be getting used to you and her new home and showing her silliness or do you think she is in distress? |
I googled the side effects also, and they say there should be none. But she is still VERY agitated and i am worried sick. She has even started to cry. I will see if I can find a 24 hour vet open. |
I hate you are going through this. Do you have an emergency vet close to you? Bless her heart, that's pitiful! :( |
Better safe than sorry Sharon. Good luck tonight. Let us know what the vet says. I'll be thinking of you two... |
She seems in distress to me. Am on hold with a 24 hour vet hospital right now. Ok, I am leaving right now to take her to the emergency hospital. I am so scared! |
Prayers to you girl! Drive carefully, keep us posted! |
It's 2:30am and I just got home from the emergency hospital. Lacy's eyes were a little dilated, other than that, all her vital signs were good. The vet had no idea what the problem could be. He said side effects from Panacur are extremely rare, so he could not say if her agitation was caused by the Panacur or not. I will call her reg vet tomorrow and see if we can put her on something else. Lacy is still very agitated, going on NINE hours now. It is going to be a long night. As soon as I put her in the playpen, she howls. Ear splitting howls from a little 2 pound sweet little girl. When I was holding her, I could feel her stomach rumbling and heard a lot of noise. I told the vet and asked him to give her something to calm her stomach. He gave her $140.00 worth of medications to calm her stomach. Good grief! He said he could do X-rays to see if she might have a piece of chicken feet stuck in her insides (her breeder gave all her pups chicken feet and one died from a perforated intestine and another is still pretty sick) and he said it would cost between $650. to $812.00. I said I would wait until tomorrow to see how she was doing. So, a recap: 2 ½ hours at the hospital for a 15 minute exam, $140. for injections to calm her stomach, a bill of $245.00 plus another bill that will arrive in the mail as I got photographed by a speed camera. And Lacy is not much better than she was 5 hours ago. As I said, it is going to be a long night. |
Well, I "thought" I was going to bed half an hour ago, put Lacy into her playpen with a clean UGO potty, whelping pad and clean blanket, came out to turn off the lights, went back in to see that she had pooped and walked through it. So because of her Giardia, I had to wash her feet and butt, clean the ugo pad, change the bedding and put down a clean whelping pad. And she is still screaming like a coyote. Wish I had asked the doc for some meds for my stress level. lol |
How is the little one this morning? I hope she is doing better... |
Wow, I hope she is doing better this morning, you both have to be exhausted! What an expensive and nerve wrecking night! When little Lacy gets through this you both are going to need a vacation! Maybe ya'll can get some rest today! |
What a night, how is your baby this morning, and how are you doing? |
The first couple of hours last night, Lacy cried nonstop, that was so difficult to hear. She has finally calmed down, but is still pretty restless. She will not lay down in my arms like she did the first few days i had her, so i can only type with one hand, as i need the other one to hold Lacy to keep her from falling off my lap, she just can't get comfortable and keeps changing positions constantly. But she is much better than last night. There is definitely something still bothering her. She would not eat any breakfast this morning. I will call my vet as son as i have had my coffee. |
Piper was very restless and couldn't get comfortable after getting spayed; she also kept stretching her little neck. When I phoned vet she said to give Piper more pain medication. It sounds as though Lacy is in pain. Tell your vet everything you can think of...Hang in there; praying all will be well. |
Last night the emergency vet said there was a chance her hyper agitated state was due to the Panacur and to stop giving it to her and call my vet today for a change of meds. Unfortunately my vet is closed, so can't call them until Monday. So surprised, as my vet back home in Canada is open all day Sat and Sunday. I am going to phone around to see if I can find a new vet that is open on weekends. Taking her to the emergency is outrageously expensive, so I would like to find a vert that has better hours. Called the emergency clinic back and they said to hold off on the meds until Monday. Which makes a few more days of being scrupulous about washing her feet, butt, bedding, flooring, and UGO pad every time she poops. |
There are TONS of cases, dating back to at least 2008, of Panacur causing hyperactivity and agitation for up to 24 hours after each dose until the medication is stopped. Simply Google "panacur adverse reactions hyper." |
There are TONS of links to cases (dating back to 2008) of panacur related to hyper-ness and extreme agitation. For example, Google "panacur adverse reactions hyper." It is not *that* rare. |

I am so upset that Lacy is not on any meds right now for her Giardia, all because my vet is closed until Monday morning. It is just prolonging her uncomfortableness. Will be calling the vet first thing tomorrow to get her on something different. |
Sharon Snowbird, Where in Scottsdale are you? There are some good vets in Scottsdale that have at least Saturday hours. Also a couple of good ER clinics. I'm in Fountain Hills but have used Dr. Council at Hillside Animal Clinic in Scottsdale many times and highly recommend her. They have Saturday hours. As for not being on meds for the giardia right now, I would not stress that too much. My pup came with Giardia a couple of years ago and it took forever and three treatments of the meds before she cleared it. Unless your pup becomes very lethargic or is vomiting, I wouldn't worry too much about her missing a day of meds. It can be a long road to clearing that nasty little parasite and you'll be cleaning and washing feet and bleaching for longer than you want to. Good luck. I hope your baby is getting some rest now and that you are too. Diana |
Official drug side-effects arise from pharmaceutical studies—usually long-term investigations, normally conducted before the drug is approved for public release. Given the length of time that the adverse reaction has been noted (even by veterinarians), I wouldn't expect agitation-caused by panacur ever to be listed as an official "adverse reaction." The agitation is not long-lasting, it abates when panacur is withdrawn, and has not appeared to cause harm to the animal—therefore, it would not seem to meet the criteria for new studies to be conducted. |

Lacy is MUCH better today, which is a tremendous relief. I will check out Hillside Animal Hospital. I also found Scottsdale Animal Healthcare, (great reviews) and which is open Sunday's. Thanks for your help! |
So sorry that you are experiencing this with Lacy. Did she come with the Giardiasis? Did the breeder give you anything for the giardiasis? Giardiasis is not always the easiest problem to eradicate. |
I'm sorry you're having trouble with Lacy and I hope all goes well with her at the vet today. For the restless, anxiousness try this stuff called Rescue Remedy. I've seen it calm a few dogs. It can at least get you some rest. |
Sharon, I have also heard good things about Scottsdale Animal Healthcare but don't have any personal experience with them. It would be a drive for me sine I live in Fountain Hills. :) Why oh why can't I find a vet that is open 7 days a week! LOL I am so glad that Lacy is feeling better. When I said my dog went through three courses of treatment for the giardia - she was only ill and had symptoms the first time, when she was diagnosed. After a couple of days on panacur, her symptoms resolved and she seemed fine, but we could not rid her stool sample of the parasite until a month after the third treatment. We kept plugging away at it - I've got two other dogs in the house and the last thing I needed was an epidemic of it. We used panacur all three times. Metronidazole is another treatment for giardia but our vet didn't want to use it on our pup because she was very young and only weighed a couple of pounds at the time. Good luck with getting rid of the giardia, and with finding a more assessable vet. One thing I really liked about Hillside and also about the current vet I'm using now in Fountain Hills is that they are very available by email even when the clinic isn't open. I've found that both monitor their emails very regularly nights and on weekends and are willing to advise or at least make a phone call to help. Diana |
I don't know if it'd be too far for you, but I highly recommend University Vet / Animal Hospital in Tempe. See Dr. Koch if you can. |

I told the breeder Kathy, that Lacy has Giardia, and she immediately said none of her pups have it. I suggested to her that she test her other pups for it. If Lacy has it, her other pups might also. |
