Pet Insurance Anyone have info or suggestions on what to look for, etc?? I'm considering purchasing Pet Insurance for my 11 month old furbaby...... pros / cons ? What's covered, no covered, pre-existing condition(s), etc. |
Hi there, I was considering too, but I have read really nasty reviews on yelp on these pet insurances that claim that they are very good...they seem to blame everything on pre-existing medical conditions and end up not covering anything...I would also like and see what others here have experienced with pet insurances??? |

Exactly... I don't like the term "pre-existing".... my dog was tested for pancreas issue but wasn't diagnosed.. so I'm wondering if later something did happen; even though not diagnosed just tested... if their going to consider this pre-existing? Especially since they require dog medical records for past year? |
Pet insurance I am very glad that I got pet insurance for the boy I adopted when he was one year old. I took him to the vet for tests and exam as a baseline, and then insured him. He was fine then. Although he had no history, as he was a rescue, before I adopted him, that was ok. Six months later he had to have cataract surgery that cost over $3500, but the insurance covered and paid up without question. It is a good idea to insure as young as possible or as soon as you adopt the dog to lessen the preexisting issue. I have Trupanion and another good one is Healthy Paws I believe. These were chosen after much research as there are so many conditions and coverage variables. You can go to the websites and compare coverage and exclusions, and prices. Make sure you compare apples with apples! Both the above insurers cover hereditary conditions. You can choose a deductible to get the premium that suits you. The above insurers do not cover routine things like dentals, flea and worm meds and vet visits. But there are some insurers who cover these wellness issues I think. Depends what coverage you wish. Good luck and happy hunting! |

Pancreas testing? I would think that if there was no pancreatitis diagnosis, it would not be preexisting. But you could call the company with any questions you have to make sure . Once you are accepted as 'clean' there is no further checking of medical records. My dog did have pancreatitis after I signed him up and if he had it again, it would be covered. I even get him tested if I think he may have it when he has a tummy upset, and they cover the tests! |

Yeah, see, hopefully they do not consider it pre-exisiting...I want to get one for my baby she is 4 months and has a cold right now...I wonder if I get her the insurance and in a few months she has something else they somehow would want to link it to a pre-existing...I have read a few here that say that some vets dont even recommend and you should just open a bank account for your pet expense...but who really does that right? Let me know if you do and how it goes! |
Insurance Often I read here that a pet has symptoms and the moms/ dads leave it for days to see what happens,.......especially if funds are tight. If you have insurance it is more likeLy you would see the vet earlier and get tested and diagnosed before the situation gets worse. As you see, I do find insurance very helpful, and my experiences have been good. And no I do not get commission for suggesting you get insurance! LoL! |

I'm considering $250 deductible for $35 / month for my 11 month old girl. and yes, she's spayed! It would be a peace of mind just for future. |
Dotti Thanks.. I agree. Better safe than sorry... as I'm finding out, it can be expensive! |

Insurance I don't think you will regret it, but hope you never need it:) When we first get our pet we don't expect them to get sick, but if they do it sure can get expensive! |
do you have to pay to sign up ??? |
Sign up Sorry I can't remember, but don't think so. By the way they have a 30 day waiting period for coverage, so don't let your dog get sick until that time has passed:) |

There's others out there, but read reviews and seems legit. 5 day accident coverage and 30 days waiting period claims usually processed in 60 days... |
Fee Thanks, that is a pain, but as you say, not compared to $2000 ! If the vet sends in the claim fast you can get paid quite quickly. Usually I find before I have to pay my credit card bill. So sorry about your sick baby, hope she gets well, soon. |

I have faith, this will all be resolved soon... Glad I took first step to some pet insurance!:animal36 |
Sick baby Oh no, what a thing to happen at this time too. The cost and timing are both bad! Praying she will be ok by the weekend and you can happily see your daughter graduate without worrying about a sick baby. Amazing how pups can recover from illness, so keep fingers crossed. I hope you will hold off on insurance until she is better and that it was just a GI upset with no specific diagnosis. No preexisting! |

I went with Healthy Paws. Most insurance will not pay for the vet visit so be careful unless you pay extra each month and unless you go to the vet more than once a month its not worth it. A few things I learned: 1. I called during the waiting period and mentioned I saw some scratching and because I took my dog to the vet afterwards now it is being considered pre-existing so I would be careful not to call and ask questions during the waiting period and do not say when you saw the symptoms start. You can call and speak to a rep before enrolling also ask to speak to the claims adjustor if you want to ask about a specific illness/injury 2. Each insurance company has its pros/cons choose the best one that fits your needs. 3. Some Insurance have a per accident/illness deductible and a lifetime maximums 4. I went with Healthy Paws because they have a yearly deductible no matter how many illnesses and no lifetime maximum. Though they do have a yearly maximum of about $22,000 (but it resets each year) 5. Ask lots of questions and read their sample policy very carefully 6. Canine Journal has a great article on the best and worst pet insurances its very informative. Pet Insurance Comparison 2015: Are You Ready For a Vet Emergency? Overall I think Pet Insurance is a great option to have especially for those that do not have thousands of dollars sitting in a bank account. |
we went with Trupanion for both our pups. 30 day waiting period illnes 7 day waiting period accident. |
Healthy paws etc I agree Healthy Paws is a very good insurance company. One thing that was not mentioned in the excellent link is that HP premiums increase with age I believe whereas Trupanion does not. They only increase if the vet cost in a given area changes. Although I was impressed by the HP yearly deductible as well, with T there is only one deductible per disease even if there are multiple incidents. T has worked out well for me , and the right company for anyone depends on what an individual's needs are. This is a complex matter to delve through! I decided to have zero deductible at T, so it did not affect me. But that meant a higher premium. |

If you are considering this, do not mention anything medical over the phone unless you are directly asked, and keep the answers very specific to the question they ask, or it may come back and bite you later. |
