Ewwww... Yes, some things are better left to the professionals! Plus, I would have no idea how to do it and wouldn't want to hurt my baby. |
Yes, I do it everytime she got a bath. Since Yorkie are very small, it isn't so bad if you do it every 7 to 10 days. I won't put my face right near the area though. |
I think it is important to have it done on a regular basis so my grooer does it once a month when she comes. It is not something I want to add to my list of duties at this point in my life.....better left to the professionals...lol... ;) |
I could never so something like this either but I believe my groomer does it everytime she goes in. Since I don't know much about it...is it something that is painful when it's done? Uncomfortable? |
Most dogs don't need it done. If your dog isn't scooting and her butt doesn't stink don't worry about it. I work in a grooming salon and we groom maybe 20-25 dogs per day and only emply anal glands on about 1 or 2 dogs per day on average (usually smaller dogs). The glands are supposed to empty naturally when the dog poops so I'm all for the theory "if it's not broke, don't fix it". My girl has never needed it done. The few times I have seen her scoot she usually just had some poop stuck on her butt. If you do empty your dogs anal glands, do it before a bath because that smell does not go away on it's own and it is not a nice smell. |

How do I know if my princess has that problem?? |
I do Bouncer's once every other week. Though, we won't do it for dogs in our groom shop. The smell is ungodly and I don't want to put up with that all day long. Dogs can be stinky enough as it is! lol |
This might be a stupid question but why do dogs need their anal glands emptied? and how do u do it? (I would never do it myself but i'm just curious). |
I don't express either of my dogs. They've never scooted or anything *knock on wood* so I've not seen the need to do it. They have firm stools so they are expressing them on their own without my help. I've also heard that once you start expressing them you have to express them on a regular basis and I don't want to mess with something that isn't giving them any issues. This website has some good information on it: http://www.barkbytes.com/medical/med0029.htm |
