Is it okay to get my Biewer pup at 8.5 weeks? I have finally found a wonderful new Biewer puppy! I asked the breeder if I could have him for Canadian Thanksgiving (Oct.12th) and she knows how much I need a new puppy in my life, so she said I could, the puppy will be 8.5 weeks then. I always leave for the U.S. in October, but have to wait for the rabies shot. The breeder says her vet will give my pup the rabies shot at eight weeks, instead of the second set of shots (which I will get for her later). Then I have to wait one more month to take her into the U.S. Would I be jeopardizing the puppy's health by doing this? Would appreciate some good advice. |
I would NEVER recommend giving a 8.5 week old puppy a rabies shot!!! I am stunned! |
Not sure that's a good plain. She needs her puppy shots and that includes a Parvo vaccination, Might be to many shots at one time, but you have to be certain about the Parvo shot. Just trying to prevent you from a heartache. Parvo is a killer and if your pup should get it she might not survive. My son and I almost had the loss of a pup who got Parvo and thanks to a wonderful Vet she survived but she had some major digestion issues from that time. Also 8 and a half weeks is rather young. Mama is teaching many things to her babies at that age. Either way I hope you have a wonderful pup to love...Lynne |

This breeder should know that. How AWFUL of this breeder to even suggest this. |
I would never, EVER give Rabies - of all shots - to any young pup like this. Please, do NOT do this to this poor innocent puppy....it deserves better and is at the mercy of your decisions. If you have any conscience whatsoever, you would first do right by this puppy and get the vaccines at the proper and safe times. Put this pup FIRST. Your human needs and desires should come second, for sure. |
I can not imagine the vet giving the rabies that early. My vet does not do rabies until they are at least 16 weeks old. Ours must have rabies shot by 6 months here, but it is recommended for dogs over 4 months. That is too young. |
WOW this post has bothered me so much since my other post. No REPUTABLE BREEDER would even allow this shot to be given at 8 1/2 weeks old and SHAME, SHAME on that Breeder and SHAME, SHAME on a Vet that would even do that. This Vet should know better., All I can say is prayers going for this baby if the Vac schedule isn't followed correctly. |

Pup comes first, end of story. Do the right thing, please. |

I doubt that we will hear back from "Miss Snowbird" as she will probably do as she pleases and not what is best for this pup. She should get another vet's input on the rabies shot. |
Thank you all for your very appreciated input. (Except for the nasty comment from "Miss Cherie," that was so unnecessary and so unkind, who peed in your cornflakes this morning?) I thought this was a place where you could come and learn and ask questions. If I wasn't worried about my pup, do you think I would be here asking questions and trying to figure out what is best for him? I do not know anything about shots, or when pups should leave their mom's, so I am trying to get a as much information as possible. I thought breeders knew what was the best to do. Of course I am now going to tell her that I do not want the rabies shot given at 2 months. Would it be okay at 3 months, or do I have to wait for 4 months? I will also tell her that I do not want to pick up the puppy at 8.5 weeks, I will wait until he is 3 months old. I want the best for my puppy. I have been so devastated and heartbroken since losing my beloved Chanel, and really need a puppy back in my life, but I will wait the extra month for him to have that extra time with his mom. To all of you who posted helpful, kind answers, I appreciate you all very much, thank you! |
Sharon, I think you have a good plan to wait until he is 3 months and he can be safely vaccinated for rabies. I checked and saw that any pup coming into the U.S. has to be up to date on the rabies vac. He also will benefit being with his Mom at this formidable time. I really hope the breeder will be agreeable to your plans to bring him home later. I am glad you have found a pup to fill your heart with love since losing Chanel. I'd love to see a photo of him as he sounds adorable! |

I'm glad you are reconsidering getting him at 8 weeks and not following vaccine protocol. This will help ensure your puppy has the best possible start in life. Here is a thread with vaccine protocols thst may help you know what to do and when. Good luck! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-overview.html |
I don't think Cherie was nasty at all. Sadly, we see posts like this a lot and most people either don't come back or don't listen. She said that she hopes you speak with your vet....that was actually a very good suggestion. I would never purchase a pup from a breeder who was willing to do what that breeder is doing....sounds to me like it is more about the almighty buck to her than what is good for her puppies. As has been posted many times on this forum, investigate your breeder first before you even fall in love with one of his/her puppies. |

Read my post above about the things that go on on this forum....she only commented because it is VERY frustrating to see these things over and over and over and many times our advice is ignored. She said that the op probably would not be back...that is sadly a very frequent occurrence here. She didn't disparage the OP in any way. She made the suggestion the OP discuss with her vet....I think that was being helpful. |
Shots Thank you Sharon for updating us and for taking the good advice given here. It is hard for some new pup owner, who does not know what many of us here know, to be aware of the correct protocols. Glad you came here to ask and that you were wise enough to listen. It was bad of the breeder to even suggest you do the vax at such an early age. Many times new owners come and ask questions and never listen or come back to tell us what happened. You will not regret the decisions and I hope that you will then have a healthy and happy pup when you get him. Please come on with any other questions you have, and Good Luck :-) |

She was not being nasty IMHO. She was saying "probably" because it is SO often done on this forum. I didn't see it as a personal remark, but one of experience. If she said "snowbird won't be back because she is not interested" that would be taken as personal. So...you are back. That's great and I do hope you will listen and learn. I also think that speaking with your vet is not such a bad idea. To answer your question, Who knows why people post questions when they don't want answers; but, I have been here since 2006 and would have a nice stash of money if I had a dollar bill for every post where the OP either told us our advice sucked or never came back....only to return later with a sick or dead puppy. It can seriously be very discouraging. Again.....it was not a personal attack IMHO...if you wish to see the negative side of it, that's your prerogative. I think it is wasted energy. |

Sharon, sorry you took my comment so personally. As LadyJane said, so often people come here to ask questions and we give our opinions and then never hear back from them. It is frustrating not knowing what happens after so many of us want to help. |
Cherie A very kind post. I agree we all get upset when a newbie does not EVER come back to update. But in this case it was only late last night that she posted her question, so we need to give a little more time before we assume the OP will not answer? |

This is a GREAT example of some fly by night back yard breeder that has gotten an opportunity to sell a puppy, and by golly, they will do ANYTHING, say ANYTHING, to get the money in their hot hands.....to HELL with the dog, I can not even imagine a qualified vet giving a baby that young a rabies shot.....this post has shocked and stunned me.....the cruel lengths unscrupulous people will go to in order to peddle back yard bred puppies....RUN, RUN, RUN and dont look back!!!!!! PEOPLE!!! Please, GET EDUCATED before you stumble out into a den of thieves!!! You are ASKING to get taken to the cleaners if you go into a den of thieves, all stupefied and dumbfounded and totally uneducated on how this all works....EDUCATE yourselves!!! KNOW vaccination schedules and how and WHY shots are given like they are given...... BUYERS BEWARE!!!! IF YOU STUMBLE INTO A DEN OF THIEVES, UNEDUCATED ABOUT WHAT IS RIGHT, WHAT IS WRONG, AND WHAT IS ACCEPTABLE PRACTICE, you are going to get MURDERED!!!!!! |
Thank you SugarMamma. That article says you can give a rabies shot at 3 months if via WSAVA/VGG, what is this? Thank you for your help! Another Vaccine Schedule via WSAVA / VGG 8-9 weeks old - Distemper + Parvo 11-12 weeks old - same as above 14-16 weeks old - same as above 12 weeks or older - rabies |
Cherie, I took it personally, as anyone would, because you stated MY name and that you doubted I would be back and that I would probably do what is best for myself and not my Yorkie, that is so unkind. Please don't assume that we are all alike and give us a change to post before writing us off, okay? |
Yorkies health must come first. Doesn't matter how WE feel. |
Feelings? I think the OP was very open to the constructive advice and comments here, and she took good note of them. Her feelings were hurt only for comments that were not constructive or helpful to the questions posed by the OP. |
Sharon, I saw in your profile the photo of you and your boy!! He is adorably cute! :) |
Aww, thank you EarthAngel, I got a message that the upload failed, so surprised you can see it. I thought I was going to get him next week, but now I am going to wait another month, so it is going to be a very LONG month. Can't wait to get him home and into my arms and have my home filled with love and puppy kisses again! :-) |
