| Afraid of my blood pressure cuff My doctor thinks I have POTS, basically my heart rate increases dramatically when I stand. To get ready for my cardiologist appointment I bought a wrist BP cuff. Lola gets so upset when I use it, her ears go back, she runs under the table, and acts abused for an hour. I need to use it a few times a day and seeing her upset upsets me, so it effects the reading. She's afraid of loud or weird noises in general. I don't know what to do, I tell her it's ok and cuddle her afterward but it doesn't help. I can't use treats, she's not interested when she's upset. Sometimes my family will take her in another room while I use it, but it's not always possible. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Have you put it down on the floor and left it there for a good long time, so she can just explore it / get used to it being around? It may take a good while, but it may help to leave it around in her space so she can learn its benign. Otherwise, maybe go into the bathroom to use it and shut the door...?

| They are afraid of the strangest things. Our washing machine died and when we got a new one Bubba was afraid of the sound when water filled it. He eventually has gotten use to it, but it took time. I agree leave it around where she can see it---unless she would chew it up

| Thanks for the suggestions. She's not interested in treats when she's upset. She's ok with the BP cuff until I use it, it's automatic so it inflates on it's own and she doesn't like the noise. I can't go in the bathroom because I need my resting blood pressure and heart rate and I need to take it again after standing. She gets upset if she can't get in a room with me, I'm only allowed to shut the door if I'm showering. She needs to get used to the noise, I'm just not sure how to help her. Really she needs to get over her noise fear in general. |

| I know nothing about the apparatus you're talking about, but can you turn it on when not wearing it? Then maybe you could hold and sooth Lola while she gets used to it...? |

| can't you just give her a treat and put her in another room for 10 min, or if not interested in a treat just put her in another room

| The way the BP cuff works is I put it on my wrist, press a button, it inflates, beeps, and it's done. The inflation noise is the part that upsets her. It's not practical for me to put her in another room every time I need to use it. I need to record my normal resting BP and when I'm having symptoms, I'd have to have someone take her in another room at least 5x a day. I usually do it when I have symptoms and again about 10 minutes after sitting down. Or when I shower I do resting, right after my shower, and resting again. She really needs to get over her noise issues in general, she reacts when people sneeze, cough, use a hair dryer (not on her), talk loud (excited or mad), barking dogs, fireworks, thunder, basically any loud noise. I was watching a show where the smoke detector kept beeping to change the battery and she was shaking so badly I had to change it after the 2nd beep. I try to comfort her, but it doesn't work. I need to get her a thunder shirt for storms and fireworks. I ended up spending most of the 4th if July weekend sitting in the bathroom with her. |
