Yikes!!! A snake!!!! Please tell me other people have Yorkies that like to kill snakes. My son just called and his little Yorkie just killed a garder (sp) snake. It was a small, harmless snake but his Yorkie was thrashing it around until she had it almost cut in two. She then brought it over to him and laid it at his feet. She now runs over to the spot she caught her snake every time they let her out and won't go potty, only wants to sniff where the snake was. Is this normal for Yorkies to kill snakes? |
I believe "gettin' varmints and vermin" is part of Yorkies' nature and calling. Piper once caught a mouse and brought it in---right before three prickly co-workers were due to arrive! I can do without mice and snakes being presented to me, thanks! |
it's normal for them to try to get anything small that moves, Lola is always after something from a fly in the house, a bee on a flower, a frog, a small bird and especially chipmunks. My last yorkie killed a mouse in our house. His pup will probably never forget about that snake and look for it every time she goes out, Lola still runs by the woodpile and the downspouts every chance she gets because she has seen chipmunks there years ago. I would suggest your son start taking his pup out to potty via a leash, to me even with a fenced in yard that is the only way to insure they potty in a timely fashion. Also there are so many small critters that are poisonous that the pup could be at risk in the future. I know of several members that lost their pups this way, one from a small frog/toad, another from a snake bite right on their porch and another one from a nut or something from a sago palm tree. Hard to believe that even a fenced in yard can be a dangerous place for a small dog |
We have scorpions, water moccasins, and copperheads. Two of my dogs have been scorpion bit, both as pups. Hard to protect them from that since scorpions are inside and out. Thankfully, only one copperhead has made its way into the house, and at that time, we did not have an indoor dog. I hope one never makes it in while we have Mario, because I just know he will go after it *sigh*. |
1 Attachment(s) I pity anything Cody would catch, he's always searching and hunting. He saw a baby garder snake (appox. 8/9 inchs) slither under the deck a few weeks ago, he stalks that spot. Here's pic picture when there "was" a rodent in a tube that "was" attached to the down spout. I removed the tube because he will. |
That is their job.....that is "God instilled" behavior and it is in their genetic makeup! Anything that is quick moving, fleeting...... catches their attention and sets them off into "hunter" mode. |
This is very normal. They were bred to kill vermin. I am blessed my girl has absolutely no prey drive at all except toward flies and grasshoppers. I keep rodents, birds, chickens, and yes, snakes, as pets. She has adopted them all as hers and will groom them with her tongue, nurse them if they are ill, and will supervise the chickens for me. If they make a sound of alarm, Kaira will check on them. It's incredible. I would look into a snake avoidance class. They do offer them. Do prepare yourself, though- the training is very hard to watch. They use shock collars and live snakes. The dog goes too close, and they shock it. They learn very quickly that a snake means pain and it can be lifesaving where I live- we have rattlesnakes. Dogs get bit all the time and often die in the wilderness before they can be got to a vet. Keep in mind if you do the class that it is intended to cause pain. It's very hard- I did it with our labrador years ago (she has since passed away). I insisted, due to her sensitivity, they put the collar on the lowest setting and it was still very hard to watch. But it DID work. She was not interested in snakes- my aunt's dog also took it and he will run away from snakes. |
Luckily where we live the garder snake is the most common here. Would really get nervous if rattlers or copper heads were around. |

Ugh yes unfortunately! Jackson killed a huge rabbit a few months ago, I felt so bad for the poor thing :\ but he was so proud of himself... |
Years back my now passed Matese the mighty hunter unbeknownst to me caught a medium size frog, bought it into the house via the doggie hatch and put it in her bed. I came into the house and found this frog hopping around, I'm thinking how did this frog get in the house, I picked it up and released it way back in the woods, later my mighty hunter came in, went to her bed, tore it apart, flipped it over, then running back and fourth to me and her bed crying, I realized it was her that bought her catch in the house and put it in her treasure box (her bed). I felt so bad that I had to remove her find, she hunted everyday and never caught anything, and when she did I took it away. I then prayed she would never catch a snake and bring that in the house. Thankfully that never happened lol. |

A former YT member, Steve, has 2 Yorkies who love snake hunting. He is in Illinois like you, Karen, Chicago suburbs, so little chance of a poisonous snake. My Teddy I'm sure would love to go after a snake. He enjoys chasing bugs. We found him swatting at a wasp that had gotten into the house. |
Scooter found a large, 3 foot, black snake on the patio one day. He was having the best time because he finally had something that played with him. The snake was none too happy and was hissing and trying to get away. Scooter was barking and leaping around which only made the snake more nervous. I had to interrupt this playtime and put Scooter in the house and put the snake outside. Fortunately it was a harmless black snake but we do have poisonous snakes here in Florida and although I've not seen one at this house I worry that someday Scooter will encounter a bad snake. It has to be the terrier in them that wants to go after anything that moves. |
I hope Chloe dosen't see a snake, she does chase bugs, well that's what they were bred for and they do a great job of it. It's seems they have an obsessive behaviour. I wrote a Thread called "Yorkie obsessed with Kitty". My Yorkie Chloe is obsessed with Kit the cat next door. Chloe goes out just to wait for Kit to come out, Chloe won't pee outside anymore, just waits at the fence for Kit, she would stay there for hours if I let her, and then she will come back inside and pee on her pee pad. Very determined little doggies, and so cute. |
