Rabies, Distemper, Bordatella vaccine given at same time Again for my friend that lives in NYC… Next month the puppy will 4 months old. The vet is giving the puppy Rabies, Distemper, Bordatella vaccine at same time. Bordatella Is a core vaccine in NYC due to large outbreak of kennel cough, dogs cannot go to a groomer unless they show papers the dog has been vaccinated with-in the last 6 months. I emphasized shot only NOT nasal spray and gave her the reason why. Prior to joining YT My dogs / dog was given multiple vaccines, I was not aware this was not a safe thing to do. I have learned much in the short time I have been on YT. So my question is:::for this puppy, is it safe to give these 3 vaccines at one time? If not what vaccines should be given on next month’s visit and how long should she wait for the other / others shot to be given. Thanking all in advance for your advice. |
It might be a combo shot meaning it is all in one shot. I was going to wait on getting mine their rabies shot, but their last set of puppy shots included rabies in it. They were only given one shot and they got the distemper and rabies all in 1 shot. As far as the bordetella, I don't know if that one is included or if it will be a separate shot. That is what she should ask the vet is how many shots the puppy will be getting and if it is more than one I would see about splitting them up by about 3 weeks or so. Although sometimes you have to pay for another vet visit for the next shot. Mine came in "puppy packages" which meant that I paid one price and got everything included in that visit. If I split it up I would have missed out on the discount of getting it all at once. |
I've read that you shouldn't get the rabies shot the same time as the other vaccines, can she space them out a little? It's not unusual for several of the shots to be given together, for example, Distemper, Parvo, Hepatitis, and Bordatella, but I'd give the rabies shot alone. There's some great information on vaccines in the library. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...-overview.html and http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...-vaccines.html |
Virginia requires 2 core vaccines which are: Rabies & Distemper (Lyme isn't required but is "highly recommended) Both Magnus & Zoey are adults but I still wait about 2-3 weeks before the 2nd shot when required. Only Distemper is required annually since they're not puppies anymore. And Rabies is every 3 years. I don't know how big/small the pup is but considering this will be the first vaccination while in your friend's care, I'd say wait 3 weeks just to be safe. |
It is definitely not safe from my way of thinking. I also don't believe a proper immunity can be built if the body is trying to build immunity to so many things at one time. Bortadella may be recommended and even necessary if a dog goes to a groomer, but it's not a core vaccine. Good call on recommending the vaccine rather than intranasal. I've never given it, but I understand why it might be necessary in some circumstances. My vet won't give rabies with other vaccines. I also have never given leptospirosis or corona to my Yorkies through the years. Some people do Parvo and distemper separately rather than as a booster shot. |

Thank you all for the recommendations. I will tell her to do the rabies alone, distemper and the bortadellacan be given at the same time. |
Is she taking her dog to the groomer though? Bc if not, I wouldn't get bordetella at all. It only vaccinates against about 7 strains of the cold, when there are literally countless strains...a rather useless vax in my book really... |
I googled the new law. Since last year it is necessary for grooming and boarding. I groom myself and never board, so I agree with Ann about the vaccine. I realize your friend may not have a choice. |
My friend lives in NYC. Due to a large out break of kennel cough a new law was recently implemented. This is what I found when I googled “is bordetella a core vaccine in NYC” Met Vet NYC Bordetella, the New Law and What You Need To Do Posted By admin On Thursday, June 12th 2014. Under: Dog Health Issues Bordetella is the bacteria that in rare instances can cause whooping cough in humans; dogs are far more susceptible. The bacteria transmits through direct contact as well as airborne droplets and when combined with the parainfluenza virus leads to the highly contagious upper respiratory infection commonly referred to as Kennel Cough. It is so virulent that the The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has recently toughened vaccination requirements. N.Y. ADC. LAW § 17-366 : NY Code – Section 17-366: Proof of vaccination required “No dog shall be accepted at a boarding kennel, business or establishment* unless the owner of such dog provides proof to such facility, including but not limited to a health certificate, a bill or receipt from a veterinarian or other documentation acceptable to the department, that such animal has been vaccinated against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, para influenza and parvo during the previous three years and against bordetella during the previous six months; provided that an owner of a dog shall not be required to provide proof of vaccination pursuant to this section if such owner provides a written statement from a veterinarian indicating that the dog of such owner should not be given such vaccination because of a standard veterinary contraindication and that such dog does not show symptoms of the disease or diseases for which such vaccination is contraindicated.” *This includes for short-term visits for purposes such as grooming. What that means for you and your canine companion: Quite simply–if your dog has not had a Bordetella vaccination within the past six months, you should schedule an appointment with your veterinarian promptly–without records indicating this vaccine is current your dog will not be accepted into any boarding or grooming facility–no matter how much they may wag their tail. Her new puppy is a mix I believe it's Shih Tzu / Maltese, very fluffy white puppy and will need to be groomed. I am very upset because she is going against my advise of giving this vac by injection and using the intranasal instead. The puppy will be appox 4.5 months old when he gets this vac. Thank you Ann for in put. |
I am going to suggest that she wait on the Rabies until the pup is at least six months old - if that is possible in her situation. Parvo Distemper together 0 then I would do Bordatella alone. |

Max was 13 weeks when our first vet gave him everything: bordetella up the nose, Rabies, DHPP, and who knows what else in one visit. The vet wanted to schedule a Lyme vacc for a week or two later. We didn't go back. Thankfully Max was a sturdy pup and had no problems. Now that I know more, I would never allow this. It isn't unusual for vets to think this way. |
