Max was 13 weeks when our first vet gave him everything: bordetella up the nose, Rabies, DHPP, and who knows what else in one visit. The vet wanted to schedule a Lyme vacc for a week or two later. We didn't go back. Thankfully Max was a sturdy pup and had no problems. Now that I know more, I would never allow this. It isn't unusual for vets to think this way.
I highlight this as this is a very very good point. Quite frankly over the past 10yrs or so - pet owners can get very educated on dog owning and specific issues vs a vs health - thanks to the internet and sites like this one. I can't say we always bring you the *latest* in research but there are very few health issues that are not discussed here - nor the basics of dog rearing and ownership. All vets do not necessarily keep current on the latest vaccination protocols I am sad to say. And many vets unless they have a fair number of small breed dogs in their clinic may not suggest dividing the shots up. And very very few vets will be well versed in your specific breeds health concerns. This is why it is so great to have boards like this for specific breed of dog. |
Maybe I should have clarified better in my post of dog had a reaction, I have NEVER owned a 5 lb yorkie, all teapots lol, the baby that got a reaction was 10 lbs, Matese the 6 y/o was 17 lbs. My vet has a very large small breed clientele, I see what comes in while I am waiting to see her. The shots my dogs received that day were the same my vet had always given them. Thank you YT because you have made me aware of things I never new about, and that is medical issues most importantly vaccines, and I am a yorkie owner for 35 + years, also had other breeds before yorkies captured my heart. |
Matese 35+ years ago quite frankly vet med was not too evolved and of course it was what only 20 yrs ago most of us started to have the internet and google. So how was a pet owner to know? Vets back then and even now - do not do a full information of risks n benefits before consent for many if not all procedures. And yes they might have standard sign off forms but they should not take the place of informed consent for your particular animal. |
