My yorkie is 7 weeks and 3 pounds. Is she big for a yorkie? I am new to this community and also a first time owner to a little yorkie. I just bought my little yorkie Boo who is 7 weeks right now! And I am in LOVE!! She is absolutely perfect! But I took her to the vet and she is 3 pounds already! Is that big for a yorkie puppy at 7 weeks? I'm trying to figure out how much she will weigh and what she will look like when she's older. Since I'm new to yorkies I've been reading that they lighten up as they get older. I was wondering if that's true? My little puppy doesn't look that big but if course I don't know what they are supposed to look like at this age. Thanks so much in advance! :) |

Welcome to YT! She is adorable. It's hard to predict size. That's part of the fun of having a puppy. You just wait and see how they will turn out. Supposedly you can triple their weight at 6 weeks. |
And I actually just weighed her again. She is 4 pounds! She's grown since the last time she was weighed! I didn't think it was possible for a 7 week old yorkie to be 4 pounds! |
We have some on here that had pups around 5 lbs and they are now about 16-18 lbs. While the standard is 7 lbs and under, there definitely are larger yorkies. We affectionately call them teapots. It is a possibility that it could be a silky or yorkie/silky mix. They are very similar breeds. Silkys are larger and with more of a longer muzzle and triangular head. Yorkies are a little shorter in the muzzle and a bit more rounder head. Usually I would be weary about having a 7 week old puppy but since he is on the larger side I wouldn't worry, as much. Still be on the look out if he does not eat or gets lethargic. Pups this age should be eating every few hours. Another thought I had was perhaps he is older than you have been told. Some people only want to get a pup younger than so-and-so age. So it's possible he's older thus larger and the breeder told you a different age. But usually unscrupulous breeder would lie and say a pup is older than it really is to make it seem like it is very small. And yes, they do lighten up as the age. It usually takes about 3 years for them to get their full adult coloring. |
Wow I actually think she could be a silky the only thing is I have AKC papers. Is it possible they are false? Does anybody know any other characteristics of a silky? |
Congratulations on your new puppy!😀 I know no matter what size it becomes you will be so happy with your little yorkie. Even the teapot yorkies seem small in comparison to other breeds and most yorkies have BIG personalities. I have never seen one that couldn't win your heart. Have fun with your new little companion!! |

Oh I'm so sorry there's a question about if your puppy is a silky or yorkie.!! I'm sure you can find answers with some research. To me your puppy looks like a yorkie because there are so many different looks even on this site. There are big ones little ones, leggy ones short ones but still they are yorkies. Some have larger ears some have small ears there is a standard AKC has for what they are suppose to look like. Hope you find your answers! |
BTW, your baby is just adorable. |

Yorkie and silky are very similar to the lay person. Mine are 5 and 6 lbs and I hear all the time, Oh look at the silkies! And silkies aren't as popular as yorkies so I don't really get that one. Mine are lighter in color than standard, but as far as I know, the silky color standard is pretty similar to a yorkie's. |
Thanks everyone for your help! If you have a big yorkie please post pics I would love to see what they look like |

Aw they are soo cute!! Well they don't look that much bigger than a normal yorkie! Thanks so much! |
We have a member here "Britster" her boy is about 16 lbs and one of the smartest and well trained I have seen. the good thing about the larger ones are you don't have to worry as much about them getting hurt. |
I have 2 bigge yorkies you can see in my avatar they are cute and evenn though they are big yorkies the yorkie is such a small dog they really are small so jut enjoy your baby |

Sassyyorkies is correct. My Duncan is 10 months old and weighs 12 lbs. at the moment. Last night my son brought over his miniature schnauzer who is 6 months old. Duncan looked like a little puppy compared to my son's dog. My son's dog's legs were longer than Duncan is tall! Even though Duncan weighs 12 lbs., he is small compared to most dogs. He doesn't realize it though. When we go to training classes, he always scopes out the bigger dogs; sheepdogs, boxers, mastiffs, etc., to play with! He is a little dog in a big dog's body! |
Thanks everyone for your help. I'm not too worried. I just can't wait to find out what she will look like! She can't be that big. Her mom was only 7 pounds and her dad was 5 pounds but if I were to use that predictor calculation she would be 16 pounds! That would be crazy! And I'm not sure how she could pass up her parents by that much. It's hard to believe that she is 4 pounds already. her shoulders are only about 5 inches off the floor. That doesn't seem that big to me.... |
Keep in mind that yorkies back in the day were much bigger. They still have those genes in them and every once in a while the pups can get larger than standard even though the pup's parents are standard size. |

This is my big guy. He is 2.5 years old and right at 13 pounds. |
Yorkie's comes in a lot of sizes. Its what you personally prefer. If shes too big for your definition of a Yorkie then shes too big. 10pds as a full adult is my preference. |
Aw he is a cutie! Thanks scoobstersmom! |
Thanks, Eandtstarr. I think he's pretty awesome but I'm also prejudiced towards big fat yorkies! Diana |
Welcome!!!! Congrats on your new baby! I would say that yes she is big for a yorkie of that age. She will probably be a bigger Yorkie, but I am sure she is a Yorkie if you have AKC papers on her. As far as her parents size.... you don't know if her grandparents were teapots. I have 2 puppies from the same litter and keep up with most of the litter mates. The parents were 4 1/2 and 10 lbs. One puppy is 4.2 lbs (the runt) and another puppy is about 6 lbs. My 2 pups are 6 1/2 and 7 lbs. The biggest and first born puppy though, he weighs 14 lbs! They are all from the same litter and yet he is twice what any of the others are. It is possible for the smaller parents to give off a large offspring because it could come from a grandparent. Your puppy is adorable! Love the puppy and you won't care how big it gets. Don't listen if you take it places to people telling you it is a silky. They try to tell me that my AKC registered 7 lb Yorkie is a silky when I go to petsmart! He is actually a fairly decent representation of the Yorkie Standard. Not perfect, but not bad either and Petsmart still tries to tell me I have a Silky because he doesn't have hair on his ear apparently to be a true Yorkie. LOL |
Mickey 1 Attachment(s) Mickey is 15 months old and weighs 9.4 pounds. I think he is very cute. |

:thumbup::thumbup: I have Yorkies of all sizes, from 2lbs up to 18lbs.....I adore them all! My big boys are sturdy and rough house and run like maniacs and play like lunatics, all over the back yard! How refreshing it is to have big, healthy, exhuberant boys!! They barrel thru the swimming pools I have for them, pulling the pools all over the play area,.... they are effervescent and full of amazing, exuberant life! My breeders are all between 5-7 lbs....they are adventurous, inquisitive, energetic, and love to chase birds and explore the back yard, pick all the low hanging fruit from the fig tree, the satsuma trees, and the dwarf peach tree, barreling through the water park I have set up for them, playing like crazy ladies and gentlemen......and then, kept completely separated from all the crazies, there are my itty bitty tinies that were born in litters where brothers and sisters were "standard" size Yorkies, but these tinies were throwbacks in the parents pedigrees. I keep all my tiny little Yorkies....I have never sold any yorkie that I did not expect to reach at least 4.5 lbs, and never will, I just do not deal in "tinies". LOVE them all, and enjoy your big baby, who, oh by the way, MAY just stop growing when he hits 4-6 months of age, and then he may be only 7-8 lbs full grown....remember, what your baby is governed by, is what is in his pedigree, what is behind his parents for several generations....you can not go STRICTLY by what his parent weigh! Go back and look at pups from 7-9 generations behind each of those parents! THAT will tell you what weight range your baby will most likely fall into... |
Cute Baby! Have always heard - as a somewhat guide to triple weight at 8 weeks and double at 12 weeks. This has worked out on my last two. |
3 Attachment(s) Aww , your baby is adorable .. While I don't consider my boy big I guess he is compared to the Yorkie Standard . Oscar was 4 lbs @ 11 weeks old . He is now almost 4 years old & 11 lbs . We also have an 80 lb Airedale so an 11 lb dog is tiny to me :D Attachment 407062 Attachment 407063 Attachment 407064 |
