Default Another designer breed, poochies

Yes, you heard me Poochies. wondering what kind of dog it is? a chihuahua and poodle mix. (I came up with the poochie title, the lady didn't know what they are officially being called. I'm sure it's some strange title though.) Possibly a chioodle?hmmm? She said she got her/him just recently from a breeder. I wonder how much she paid??? Is it just me, or are people willing to breed just about anything to make money? what ever happened to breeding for the breed, and not the greed?

I've actually heard of them being called Poochies. Here's a pic of one. Looks like a mutt to me -- oh wait, it IS a mutt

Whatever - these little mixed breed are delightful little dogs. I could care less about mixing small breeds - if it is done in a thoughtful, caring, healthy way, it's fine with me.

The world is a big place. There have been little mutts around forever, and I think they probably make up the largest percentage of pets -- have and always will.

I definitely don't think it is anything to get excited about. When we venture out to get a little puppy pet for ourselves - we can always look for whatever we want...purebreds or mixed breeds. They are all wonderful little pets...and, there is plenty of room in the world for both.

As far as price goes -- if a purebred Yorkie costs a lot -- and a purebred other little pup costs a lot - I think somewhat elevated prices for these little mixed breeds is acceptable. I would certainly be happy with one of these little guys.

I got a little Yorkie - and I'm happy with my choice. There are far more important things in the world other than the breed of dogs we own. We just want pets that meet our own special needs. All dogs are wonderful!!! And, what people want to pay for whatever dog they get --is their own business.

Lots of these designer breeds are poodle-somethings. Poodles are really smart and they don't shed, so I think a lot of people that aren't "poodle people" are comming up with a breed that they can live with. To each his own I think. Overpriced? Definitely! But then so are yorkies but we pay it because we love them so if someone wants to pay $600 for a labradoodle that's their choice.

I think all dogs deserve good homes mixed or not. But if you want a mix why not go to a shelter? One of the great things about purebred dogs is that you get a little bit more certainty with traits. It's not 100%, but its something. For a first generation mix you have very little way to know what traits of which the pup will have. And if money is an issue it's usually alot cheaper to get a dog from a shelter than from a breeder. It's a personal choice, but I myself really don't see the lure of the new designer breeds. They're adorable sure but looks aren't everything.

I was just thinking the same thing. There are lots of little dogs in shelters and rescues from "oopsies". It just makes no sense to me why a designer pup should fetch more then a show quality purebred. There are lots of websites where you can find these babies for thousands and thousands of dollars.

What is funny to me is that in other countries they put a fancy name to mixed breeds and actually sell them..dogs like morkies etc. Most of these dogs are BEAUTIFUL! But I dont think its fair to actually "sell" them because after all they are still a mix.
Here, these designer dogs would just be given away.Iv seen ALOT of what most people would call designer dogs in our newspapers and on my vets wall.Last week a woman was giving away lhasa apso and yorkie mix pups and I must admit that they were ADORABLE! They had the longest hair and the most beautiful colours and the size at 8 weeks old was that of a yorkie so they werent going to be big either.Iv also seen yorkie/chihuahua mixes,yorkie/westie mixes etc etc and all are free.
I think that if this happens as an accident, well, whats done is done and these babies are going to need a home, but doing it on purpose, giving it a fancy name and selling it as if it were a pure bred with no papers (Iv seen them online at $400!!) is just silly to me (no offense).

i'm just gonna play devils advocate here and be a voice of dissent on this.

just take into consideration that unlike show breeders, mixed breed breeders are not breeding for "the perfect breed standard". breeders who breed mixes are breeding for "the perfect pet", with qualities people want in a pet, not a show dog. it can be a business. it can be for profit. if it's done with care to the animals, i don't see anything wrong with people wanting to be properly compensated for the work they've put into the breeding process. afterall whelping isn't easier with a mixed litter than it is with a purebred litter. the cost and investment isn't less for the breeder if they are breeding designer mutts vs. purebreds.

designer mixes can fetch a premium because the breeder can take as much care in breeding the mix as they would with purebred pups. the parents are purebreds, registered, health tested, possess breed standard appearances, etc etc. the only difference is that the litters are not registerable because they are mixed. the quality of these mixes may actually be better than that of purebred results of an oops breeding or breeding of purebreds that shouldn't be bred (like BYB's and breeding of pets on limited registration).

hence, i think a maltese/yorkie mix from a purebred maltese and a purebred yorkie is very different from a maltese/yorkie mix from two maltese/yorkie mixes. if i didn't care about the origin (parents) and breeding of the mixed puppy, i'd just adopt from a shelter. but some people want a specific type of mix because of temperament, shedding, coloring, look, reduction of breed specific defects, etc etc. and those qualities may not come out of an "oops" mixed breeding.

i personally wouldn't pay more for a purebred without papers or a purebred of questionable origin than a mixed pup with documented origins and breeding. but sometimes mixes are not just "mutts". just throwing my two cents out there.

I have to say while mixed breeds are just as special and adorable as any other dog...I do wish more people would go to shelters if they want a loving pet....there's so many mixed breeds just waiting for good homes and this whole 'Breed for greed' thing (I LOVE that saying) is just going to make the situation worse for the homeless dogs.

I dont think that picture of it is very cute at all. I think both poodles and chihauhaus are very cute so why mix them.

Confused

I have to agree with the fact that there are a great many dogs in shelters needing loving homes, but also realize that there are also some great mix's also, now as far as a morkie,I have heard they have all of the quality of both breeds and when you mix them you have a healty dog, with great teeth, now I am not for breeding for the money factor, and I do see some are, but also think that if someone goes under a fence,or thru the gate, then these puppies have alot of great quality's,small, cute and healthy, but I do not think they should be breed just for the sake of the $ sign, nor do I think they should be sold for a huge price, but I also beleave that when you pay for something you take better care of it..but the cost of shots, food and toys should be recouped, also giving the buyer the feeling they have invested in there puppy, free is free, meaning no value
