You can also hit the jackpot with a free/cheap Yorkie that has no health problems and is an amazing pet!

Teek was free. He is the best. Sometimes people just can't keep their dogs and so they give them away or rehome them for a reasonable price to.

But generally a reputable breeder has a clause in the contract for any dogs that can't be kept to come back to them so you can pretty much tell the dog is not from a reputable breeder. Of course you can be lucky but not always and if your going to take on a dog like that you need to be prepared for the possibility of bills instead of getting the dog finding out the issues and then getting rid of the dog because you didn't know about the possibility of expenses or could not afforded it. I have heard many many people say well this free dog cost me thousands. It's something you have to be careful about. Generally people looking for a free or cheap dog are not able to pay for the expenses that come with owning a dog especially one that could possibly have issues.

Some people who take free/cheap dogs, just don't believe in paying a lot for a dog when so many dogs need homes.

I took in a cheap dog ($25 purebred English Setter) and yes, she did end up with health issues and I spend thousands of dollars on her for 3 years, until she died from cancer.

I also took in another FREE English Setter before she got sick and have had him almost 4 years and he has no major health problems.

My husband will not let me spend a lot of money acquiring a dog, but once it is ours we do whatever is needed for it.

Taking in a dog like that is a gamble. Sometimes you hit the jackpot and sometimes you don't. If no one is willing to take in the dogs that need homes then where will they end up? I am glad Teek is with me and didn't go to the pound or something. I think he hit the jackpot by ending up with me because that dog is loved and spoiled and well cared for.

I was only trying to point out that just because a dog is cheap or free is not the best reason to get a dog there are other things to look at. Whether you can afforded it and whether you are prepared for the could bes are very important. Many people go oh this dog is free, he or she is so cute let me get them but are not prepared for the costs that come with owning a dog. I have no problem with rescues our very first dog was a rescue and my moms yorkie now is a rescue. Great dogs. I was actually talking to one women who was listing there yorkie very cheap on craigslist and eventually found out the dog had very serious issues and needed surgery and that's why she was getting rid of him but wasn't going to tell anyone. Gotta be careful.

Absolutely. I have taken in lots of strays, unwanted, new home needed, and feral animals, and never had one with health issues. There are no guarantees in life, regardless of the source that created the pet.

Whether a dog be free or you pay top $ for one, to me, the most important thing is, "do you have the finances to put out large bucks if need be" now or in the future, that's important, funds to care for dogs health. Buying a dog is the least expensive, maintaining it's heath is where the cost is. If you have the funds to do all you can do for a sick then go for it. If not, then step back.
