Help! First time Yorkie's parents... My two female Yorkie's are siblings - 9 weeks old and their ears aren't even close to erect. I do not want to tape or glue cardboard teardrop shapes on their ears or anything else, but desperately want their ears erect. I've been massaging their ears several times daily hoping to strengthen their ears. What now? Their Mother is two lbs and Father five lbs - What can I expect their weight to be when grown. They are already 2.1lbs and 2.4lbs at 9 weeks. Also, the pooping and peeing is going fair at about 60%. We invested in the modern puppy training apartment and it's helping, but they are a little stubborn. Oh, by the way their names are The Royal Countess and The Royal Duchess. Mother is AKC and Father is CKC and they are our little "love girls"... Any help from experienced Yorkie people would be so appreciated, because I have lot's of questions, and need your expertize. Please somebody take us under their wing as we have about loved these girls to death, but it's time for some disciple and guidance so they will be a wonderful addition to our home...We are retired empty nesters and spend winter months in FL. Thanks so much as we want the very best for our girls... |
Sometimes they just don't go up! My boy is 9 months and only sticks 1 ear up occasionally...as for weight I believe it is double their weight at 12 weeks for their grown weight :) |
Hi, congratulations, and welcome. I got my Yorkies as adults from their previous owners, however, at 9 weeks old, I would think there is still time to allow their ears to 'do their thing' and this is 'not' a cause for worry yet. Others can advise you much better than I on this subject, but I think I would not start being concerned just yet, although I might trim the hair off their ears with a 'safe' trimmer to keep unneeded weight off if there is a lot of it. Do you have photos of your little ones? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! I also have sibling puppies. They are brother and sister and are 16 weeks old tomorrow. I would estimate, based on a dog breed weight estimater that they will weigh between 5-6 lbs as adults for your puppies. Mine wrestle constantly and love each other so very much. I also have a 9 year old Yorkie that I got 6 months ago. As far as the ears, I wouldn't worry quite yet about it. Mine their ears don't stand up, but I am not going to do anything with them really. We did trim their hair on their ears a little bit but it didn't do anything so we are not going to worry about it if they don't stand up. |
shave/ cut the hair off the ear. If they are going to stand this will help |
Hi & Welcome to YT ! Congrats on your new family members. I agree that shaving or trimming the hair off of the top half of the ears can help. You can use the thinner white medical tape on the top tip of the ears to help but even that will not work on a pup whos ears are just not going to stand. They are still young & their ears will go up & down over the next several months, as they go through the teething process. Taping is really not so bad & they do get used to it quickly but you do have to change the tape often & I prefer to leave it off for a couple of days between tapings just to let the ear air out. There are videos on YouTube that show how-to. |
Hi and welcome to YT :)! If you want the ears to stand, you really do need to trim then and tape them..otherwise, they won't. Here's how to do it: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pup...-stand-up.html Weight wise, it's hard to say - but I'd guess somewhere around 4-5.5 lbs...? |
Royal Countess and Royal Duchess Thanks YorkieTalk pals for the info...Try to upload pic of girls from my computer, but don't think it worked... |

I had a horrible time trying to shave my pups ears and finally gave up after several attempts and just kept them shaved and they came up on their own and never went back down. My other pups ears were up when I first saw him at 8 weeks. Not all pups need to have their ears taped. |
I never taped my dogs ears. The have always stayed up.But Their ears are always shaved. Its part of there Yorkie look. |
Hi welcome to Yorkietalk :) Like everyone else said I would trim the hair on the ears. |
I rescued Annie when she was 4.5 months. Her ears were still dropping then. Over the next year they went up and down, mostly due to teeth coming in. At 1.5 years now her ears are perfectly erect and I never taped them (I really didn't care if they were up or down...). Just give your new little ones time and I agree with keeping the hair trimmed so there is no excess weight. |
