Is Pantene Shampoo & Conditioner Harmful To Use For My Yorkie ? I ran out of dog shampoo so I used a little Pantene Conditioner to give Oscar his bath and it made his hair so silky and super shiny .. It did not bother him as far as causing itching either but is it safe to use ? I have no problem buying and using dog shampoo but he has such sensitive skin it is hard to find something that does not bother him .. |
I have used it before with no issues. |
I remember reading about this and the difference is the pH level. Human shampoos are more acidic. Another good reason to use the doggie shampoo is that they're designed to clean well for specific coat types and keep them clean for longer period of times. Human shampoos are geared more towards daily use. |
In in emergency I doubt it's a big deal but on a normal bases it really shouldn't be done because of the PH level. |
I use Pantene conditioner Ice Shine as someone had recommended it on YT. I haven't had any adverse reaction such as itching. |
:) Hi Wanda! Oscar would look stunning whatever you used...:) I occasionally use Pantene shampoo and/or conditioner on Harry-boy and he always looks stunning afterwards, gleaming away in the sunshine... I think the key is to rinse + rinse + rinse then rinse again - no adverse reactions over here, either! :) |
Thank you all .. So I gather the general consensus is OK on occasion but not for regular use . I think I will stick to dog shampoo .. I will try to find a hypoallergenic one .. |
I have used it before, especially love the Ice Conditioner, makes them so very soft and silky. I have never had a problem with it. Just make sure you rinse really well. |
If there was no adverse reaction then suppose its alright. just rinse it well. |
I started using the Ice Conditioner when I was showing Razzman and then only on show days. It is just as good as Nutrient Masque which is very pricey - how-ever beyond the Ph level is it silicon in the product which is not a good idea for regular use. |
I personally wouldn't use it on Sunni. It hasn't been necessary really. I use the Isle of Dogs products and her hair is super silky and shiny and doesn't get greasy in between baths. I did learn the hard way when I first got her about baby shampoo, lol. I thought it would be super gentle, but didn't realize that its basically just soap and extra drying on her skin. |

I know people who use Pantene and other human hair products on their dogs consistently (including exhibitors who use Redken) and they have no problems. Their coats are beautiful. Some of the downsides were listed above: pH difference, ingredients including silicones and sulfates (which many dog products have). I've used my Pantene shampoo and conditioner on Max and Teddy in a pinch. I didn't care for the results. Their coats were not as silky soft. |
This really isn't about their coats as much as their skin. Quote:

Just read on a quilt that the coconut oil you use for cooking and skin is terrific for your hair and for your pets both inside and outside. |

Thank you all for the great advice and info . I think it will be better to find a good quality doggie shampoo & conditioner .. |
Biogroom's So Gentle shampoo is hypoallergenic & soap free. It leaves them very soft & is great for those w/sensitive skin. |

On a different note, I do use dog shampoo on all my girls but sometimes I do use Pantene conditioner. All three seem to tolerate this okay. |
I know alot of ppl here don't use Show Handlers. But its fairly inexpensive. Says all natural. Has no to very little smell. Which I like. I don't like to much added fragrances. Very gentle on the skin. Is concentrated to you can mix to your liking or go full. My dogs don't have dry skin and the coats.. are soft on the short hair and the long hair looks and feels silky. I've tried alot of different things but always go back. I know alot of Show Breeders at a high level use it. They also use different stuff for finishing ect. But seem to be every I go. |

The Coat Handler product looks very good too . Thank you for posting .. |
chester uses bio groom fluffy puppy shampoo, he is very sensitive |
Just on a professional note on Pantene (I'm a cosmetologist). I've seen on humans that it either works to make their hair like the commercials, soft shiny, etc. but I've also seen on some folks have hair break and be brittle because of it. Like you've mentioned, in a fix it's not bad, but for long term use you'll have to watch the hair's condition carefully. For some, it works well but for others it doesn't. Personally, if it isn't something I make myself for my dog, I would go with something actually formulated for dogs. Unless I believe the product is just not good at all (White Rain, is a good example), I usually say it all depends on the person's hair, or in this case the dog's. |
My breeder used Pantene. I actually like the results as to me it seems like she stays cleaner longer. Coat stays silky and fresh even after going outside. Helps with tangling since Emma is in full coat which I like. We bathe her once a week but there are times we can go longer. |
interesting topic, I personally use Panteen and have used it for multiple yorkies and now Lola about 60% of the time, I never had a problem. Never thought much about the skin, just more about the hair. I will probably continue to use it but not as much. Thanks for the info |
