Silky head, cottony body? Hi guys. Just wanted to ask a quick q. Is it normal for 3 month puppy to have a silky head but thick "cottony" body? I think it's just the pupy coat that it'd change but when I just dropped him off at the groomer this morning, the groomer said that she think he'd prolly stay cottony.. I'm not sure if I should her words at heart.. but when I did quick googling.. I did see ppl having silky head - cotton body puppies but didn't get to see how they turned out to be... Help? |
I don't know the answer to this, but I will say that I find on my kiddos that their heads are generally a little more silky than their bodies, for some reason...? |
Oh o.o were they always like that? How old are they? |
Laveau is 3 months and the hair on her head is way silkier than the black tips. Especially the white that's growing out at the roots. The white that's coming from her back is silkier than her black "puppy hair". |
1 Attachment(s) @colesmommy01 oh hi! its you again! :) but oo. does that mean that Laveau will have silky coat later? I'm not really seeing any white roots coming in on his body yet.. maybe some around his arms, but I'm not sure if it was there from start. lol i want kupo to have silky hair later (eventhough he's cute with his puppy coat)... since i can't really get those mats out.. and he mats so easily... apparently i didnt get his arms good enough when brushing, and when i saw last night, it was matted up in a ball.. T_T groomers took care of it though :) i think they did an ok job, since they really couldn't really give him a proper trim (kupo was scared of clippers), but she def. scared me when she said he's gonna be cottony.. -_-; but here's random pic of him after his first partial trim :D lol (attached below) but i know that puppy takes a year or so for them to fully change coats.. if he's head is changing colors already, do you think his body will soon too... and his coat as well? |
I don't know how his hair will grow out but, a really good conditioner after a bath helps tremendously. That's how I am able to comb through Zoey's hair easily every day. |
Bella had her first grooming at 16 weeks. She went from black cotton puppy coat to silver silky coat in one fell swoop. Before and after grooming pictures are at near the bottom of the first page of this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-grooming.html I expect that your dog could very well go through the same changes, but you're probably a month away from the start of the changes. |
@belladea i use cc's day to day shampoo and conditioner, as well as cc's ice on ice detangler whenever i brush him.. but he seems to mat alot.. (maybe i'm doing it wrong..) you are supposed to rinse out the conditioner right? and leave ice on ice on him..? @pstinard o.o whoa. did she have white roots already or something? that seemed like major before and after lol. she looks so pretty! |
Hiya ;)! Kupo is so cute!!!! Were his parents silky? Both Veau's sire/dam are silky so the chance of her being that as well is high, but you never know with a yorkie. It took Rasta about a year to change colors. His mother is a black/gold and father is blue/gold and he turned out silky. His head was completely grey and his body black, now it's slooooooly changing to blonde. Puppy coat transitioning to adult coat is the worst imo lol. Did the groomer shave under his armpits so he won't mat as badly? I shave belly and armpits every month to avoid any tangling. |
2 Attachment(s) @colemommy01 ty! i love kupo lol i think he's the cutest puppy i've ever seen lol (i actually love my puppy more than my bf. but don't tell him.. lol *he prolly already knows though XD*) but.. erm i think they were silky (attaching pictures below) all i know is that he was champion and his grandparents were champions as well lol. i think he has a white coat gene on him since when i looked into his pedigree, his mom's dad was a gold/white parti. on his mom's pedigree though, she's just listed as "gold", but in the pic, it looks like she has some blue on her back.. i'm not sure.. lol does all yorkie puppy lose their black sooner or later? i want him to change to blue and gold but my bf want him to stay as black and gold lol but.. im' not sure if the groomers shaved him (he's sleeping atm and i dont wanna wake him up lol). i know he didn't get to do full grooming cuz he was terrified of clippers.. i think they only got to do his butt and his feet.. lol.. but they seemed to trimmed around the body a bit.. maybe not even a inch (as i asked :D) as for matting.. his armpit didnt seem to mat (when i checked last night) it was more like those areas he lays on with.. side of his arms and legs.. :/ not really sure how i should approach this anymore.. apparently what i did was wrong since it still got matted :/ |

Cali's hair on her head is much more of a silky texture than her body. Her body is cotton for sure! That's her in my avatar, but I also have some baby photos of her in an album if you go to my profile. |
@pstinard so should i just wait to see if his coat color will change too? lol all yorkies change their colors right? (i hope it changes soon... ahhh the anticipation :/) @calismama she's cute! how old is she? |
I had the same concern with my little girl and the groomer also said she thought she would have a cotton coat but now she is 7 months old and definitely has a silky coat😀 She never tangles but I do use conditioner. |
Like Daywaters, I had the same feeling with Sunni that she was going to have a cotton coat. Her hair was so fluffy and thick. She's 6 1/2 months now and her coat has changed dramatically. Its gotten very soft, silky and straight. Its been changing for a bit over a month. She's still got the black tips on the ends of the hair on her head. I just can't bring myself to cut it off still. But it's definitely blonde on her head and face. The hair on her back at the part is coming in lighter..can't really determine what it is yet. Looks like grey roots. I took her for a puppy groom when she was finished with her shots. It was just to help her get used to going for a groom. I had her bathed, nails, ears butt trimmed. Since then I do the in between baths myself and take her to the groomer about once a month for the other things. I just can't cut any dog nails. I actually start to shake for fear of cutting the quick, lol. I'm not even going to attempt it anymore. My groomer really does such a beautiful job...she wants to trim her ears, but I just let her do a blunt cut around the ears. She has big ears and without hair they dont look right. I think if you eventually want to put bows and things in, the sooner you start doing it the more used to it she will be, and easier for both of you. Another thing I use instead of a brush is a fine toothed comb. She really doesn't get knots, probably because I do comb her every morning. It only takes about 10 minutes. She enjoys it now. She especially loves to have the top of her head combed. I finish with a brush. I also, have been giving her organic coconut oil since she was first with me. She gets it every day mixed in with her food. She's had medical issues, beyond my control..but so far no skin/hair issues at all. Its interesting to watch her growing up because I dont know a thing about her parents. At first I wasn't even sure she was a Yorkie!! I started to wonder if she was a Silky. But I'm pretty sure she's a Yorkie now...but probably a mill or byb. But in my eyes, she is perfect! |
