I'd say that based on the pic, my experience with Teddy (who is cottony) and this link Judging the Yorkshire Terrier by Dr, your puppy will probably have a cottony coat as an adult.

"The Yorkshire Terrier does not go through significant coat changes as do many other breeds, it is a single coated breed at birth through senior years. One of the easiest checks for the quality and texture in a Yorkie puppy is to check the feet. This is one of the first places that changes on the Yorkie. A soft coated puppy will have a fluffy foot in which the hair stands full and away from the foot. This coat quality and texture will not change as an adult and even if it changes will be what is referred to as a clerical grey. This coat will also not reflect a metallic like sheen back at you no matter how many products are put on the coat. The correct silk coat will lie flat to the foot with little volume and this occurs at a young age. "

There are some pics in my album of Teddy when he was a puppy and he had little, fat and furry legs which gave his coat type away, too!

If the hair roots are becoming white, then the coat color is beginning to change. In another month or two, you'll have a better idea. Most Yorkies go through some kind of lightening in color. Red-legged Yorkies remain darker, but they are unusual.

She is 18 months old! :) The pictures in the album are baby pictures though.

thank you guys for the responses :) the anticipation of his coat changing is killing me.. i donno how i'm going to wait another couple months to see if he'd fully change into silky coat (if he ever does.. T_T lol)

@daywalters, oh that's nice! you are giving me some hope lol. was brushing him again earlier today and since he was fussing about it, and trying to get out of my grasp.. he got all matted again within 5 min T_T;

@misssunni, im scared of cutting his nails too. lol.. i think i'll take kupo to groomers every other week or something... the groomer seemed to do pretty good job with his mats and cut :) as for coconut oil. do you know if that helps with hair matting at all? i used on myself before for deep conditioning my hair and it made my hair shiny.. i assume it'd do the same for that part but i wonder about matting. o.o;

but i was burhisng him earlier and noticed that his underbelly and inner leg is starting to show some grey and gold hair throughout. does that mean that his body is already starting to change? (but why just on his belly and his inside of legs..?) if he's changing hairs there.. does that mean that he'll be silky later.. or do you think i should just embrace the idea of him being cottony all his life? lol

@pstinard i'm starting to notice some of his belly and inner leg hair to change colors and texture.. but still nothing on his back where it gets matted the most.. and top of his arms... do you think i still have hope? and... red-legged yorkies? are there such ones? lol i just had to drag out kupo from his playpen to see what color it was.. seems light gold and black o.o

Yes, there is still hope :). Bella was cotton coated as a puppy, and as soon as the black hair grew out, all of the new silver hair was silky.

A red-legged Yorkie is one that doesn't change color much. Its coat stays shorter and dark, and the hair is coarser. Don't worry--since you can see lighter highlights beginning to come in, he will not be a red-legged Yorkie.
