Struggling here.... Monday is upon us already and its Izzys spay day. Called the vet again on Friday insisting I want to take her home at end of day and they will not let me. I don't want her to go into heat . She was 6 months on the 12 th.. If I change my mind I have nowhere to turn. They said they go home late and someone comes in middle of night to check up but I can't believe they think that's good enough. Does anyone know .....what they give them during night so they won't thrash and panic? Izzy is soooo flighty and such a scary cat ....I have so been on it socializing her but it hasn't helped much...it's really hard for her to come to me when I ask .and just runs if she wants to...can't see her being separated from me. Don't know what to do...do they sleep ?😱 There are so many things that could happen unless they sedate them...is there a protocol? I can see myself driving for 30 minutes to get there then saying forget it but then what.....she is 3 1/2 lbs ....don't know when they tend to go into heat if I have time to look around.... |
Mine go into heat around 9 1/2 months... Normally. Not saying it won't happen but in almost all of mine it's after 6 months. We also use the extra time for the adult teeth to come in since they usually retain baby teeth. Around 8-9 months, is when we spay/neuter and get puppy teeth pulled at the same time. |
There is only one vet in your town? |

Does the size matter? |
Not usually, but mine are bigger because I breed. |

I haven't had a dog before Zoey for 15 years cause of my experience with poor vets.....the last who put her down, did me in....now I have to start all over. And not doing very good ..... Maybe I expect too much to think I am entitled to information and compromise when it comes to my own pet...I just don't get it....especially since I brought Zoey home same day from spay from my previous vet.....those that have followed my journey with that know I felt the need to leave a good vet cause she wasn't available for emergency after hour calls. That is not acceptable I'm afraid.especially when I had a near death with Zoey... Now my great new vet who saved her life has such a strict no compromise policy on her practices it leaves me feeling like running again! |
The ones that I spay are small.....and they all came in around 8 months....seems the smaller they are, the later they come into season....now that is not written in stone anyplace, but just from experience, speaking..... |

I was talking to a breeder in Michigan . Do you think I was out of line to ask her who her vet is? I never heard back from her so I took it she was more interested in selling her pups than helping someone find a vet who has dealt with yorkies. I took the no reply as rude...😕 Thanks for your reply , I appreciate it....maybe now if my red flags kick in tomorrow I can say.....forget it....her health comes first and I don't want to jeopardize that..the tough times we just have to get thru. ....it doesn't help when you have family that Looooves this vet! |

Ya know I was really surprised when I called this vet for zoeys emergency that they took her not being a patient of theirs. They are not known to be Er vets they just have 24 hour on call , drop everything , I will be there service . And I like that but Ya know they have several vets and I have seen mine only once , and I don't like that....they gave 2 booster overload at the same time , and I didn't like that...she wouldn't even look at my probiotic and digestive enzymes when I asked if they were ok she said " I don't believe in giving them additives , their dog food should already have that"...😕.....mmmmm.....ohhh k They don't trim nails very well, even missed two thus last time.....😱 I really think I'm losing my mind , or I just get around much! Meaning I seriously thinking of going back😨 |
I just DONT get around much,I mean. |
It's hard to be accepted by this group too....full... I was turned down the first time....ohmy |

She did say something about going somewhere else in emergency , then I guess I just didn't understand why she didn't give me that number ....don't like being left in lurch....talked myself into changing vets. Maybe for the sake of my fur child I'll need to go back and swallow my pride get off my high horse , or beg....😱 rather than leave my baby whom I know best, overnight even "for their own good" when I know she is too flighty and scared to DO her any good. She is a hearty eater and drinker and very feisty to boot , I don't foresee any problems with dehydration etc. and I laid in bed with Zoey for 2 days and can contain , maintain , and moniter better than no one all night plus one who stops by once....do I hear an amen? |
I did not like having to leave Uni overnight for her spay either. But I already knew the vets at this hospital and I liked them. I didn't want to take a chance with another hospital that we never went to. So I did it. I asked them several times if I could come get her the same day. Nope. She's not crate trained and I can't imagine how she felt staying in a cage all night. I was there first thing in the morning to pick her up. I would also agree with Deb in spaying around 8 months so any baby teeth that don't come out on their own can be taken out during spay. I had a foster that was neutered at 4 months bc that particular vet liked to do it early. He ended up with double rows of teeth and really bad breath bc he didn't lose hardly any baby teeth. If he had waited, they could have taken out the baby teeth. |
Yeh , that's another thing....they said they were going to pull baby teeth too. she is still losing them. One came out today! Izzy still sleeps in Her play pen . She was curious about sleeping in my bed with Zoey and I , so we tried it , then on the floor beside me inher bed but she felt the need to jump out and run after poor Zoey when she gets upin the middle of the night to go and chase after her.....so that didn't work.back in playpen....she sleeps better and is willing so we'll try again when she gets older. I have to remember this last vet I really liked but they forgot to micro chip her when she got spayed and we had to put her under again to have her baby teeth pulled! Zoey was spayed at 5 months. .... I won't be able to pick Izzy till Tueday AFTERNOON! I don't think I can do this. |

But now know what I need to do. CANCEL. CANCEL CANCEL !!! First thing this morning.....then call my old vet to see if she will do the surgery. But first convincing my Husband!😱 all in 30 minutes...(suppose to leave) |
Hi, I'm not sure I have anything of value to add, except that I just had my 5 month old spayed for medical reasons. I would have preferred waiting, but my puppy wasn't able to. She had an extra long procedure, but even though they are a 24/7 animal hospital, they did allow me to bring her home after spending the day at the vet while she was sedated. She was very sleepy and I did have her in her playpen that first night, and I slept on the couch beside her, lol. Did the vet give any reason why they won't allow you to bring her home, since you will be able to watch her the whole night and they won't? Seems to me that in this case you are a better nurse then no one there at all. |
I have just been reading this thread, I am so glad to know the vet can tell which are baby teeth because Zoey is being spayed April 27 and I am sooooo worried about everything. First about them spaying her because she only weights 2 lbs and 3 ounces also because she has so many baby teeth left. She is 6 1/2 months old. Plus, they will not keep her over night and I'm not sure what I will do if she has a hard time the first night.....I am really bad with anything medical. I tend to panic when my little ones don't feel well. Anyway, thanks for all the info. PS...... I mean leave her overnight with someone on duty "all night", not a quick check in. |
Cancellation accomplished.....have an appointment for spay with vet who did zoey a year and a half ago.... When I asked if her policy has changed since then on taking them home same day....she said " no, providing she is having no complications I can take her home in the afternoon when she sees she is waking and responding" . Now THAT is what I want to hear......not absolutely not they have to stay till the afternoon the NEXT day! Not even being able to talk to the vet and THAT was 3 phone calls later.. I can keep her quiet , confined , comfortabe in her onesie( not a plastic scarey e collar) and feeling totally non stressed in her own environment to heal with her loving mama near...I'm retired and can spend every minute with her to make sure so....😉 . |

My zoey was up and at it before I wanted her to...try to keep them quiet.. Ask questions...should do blood tests first to see if they are compatible with the anesthesia...my zoey was a tiny too....izzy is as big as Zoey is now so she is not tiny for her age... Always have er number handy and know if your vet does after hours or not. But do ask questions ... and have boiled chicken and rice on hand for first day or two....canned pumkin wouldn't hurt either. Sometimes they are nauseated that first day....easy on the tummy.... I laid in bed with Zoey for two days probably will this one too...they just love being as close to you as they can....remember when you were a child how good it felt to snuggle in someone's arms?☺️ |

I think that is crazy! At our vet office you drop them off at 8 am and then you can pick them up between 3 and 5!!!! I think I would cry and be more upset than Cooper if he had to stay over night (he is a bit independent). It is your baby so you do what is best for her!!!! |
Never seen a vet (around here at least) that kept the pups after spay/neuter overnight unless there was some complication or the facility had 24 hr staff to look in on them like every hour. For M/Z, my vet kept them for few hours to make sure they woke up and responded properly. Then she called to let me know how they were doing and said I can pick them up in about an hour. (Wanted to keep them an extra hour just to make sure everythings okay) |
