Dryer Sheets on Pets

In relation to a post about "Wipes", it looked like there were ppl using dryer sheets on their furbutts. Then I remembered MimiMomo sharing info on the dangers so I simply passed that info on.

With that said, I googled to see what info comes up regarding dryer sheets/pets and found quite a few articles/posts on the dangers. Here's one I particularly liked:

Warning About Dryer Sheets And Pets | ThriftyFun

There are plenty of other things that's "harmful" to us but doesn't mean we'll stop using them. So I'd like to say... "to each their own." :D

Great information, I've read people recommending wiping the pet down with one if there is static electricity in the air. I guess they assumed since humans can use it on clothing, it would be safe for pets, but as the article pointed out dogs lick themselves and could end up ingesting some pretty bad chemicals. This would be a good article for the library.

I have always heard it is not a good idea due to the chemicals on the dryer sheets

My understanding, even from many years ago, is that even breathing the dryer exhaust from fabric softeners and chemical softener sheets is harmful to pets....humans, too, actually. I blocked my dryer vent area so my kitties couldn't lie in the warm air from the vent, as they loved to do. I got snubbed for a little while but I still have one of those kitties...he will be 17 in a couple months. Worth it, IMHO. I have heard there are now some dryer sheets that are safer and can be used on dogs, but, personally, I am just not sure I am that trusting. For static in the hair, misting with water or a light touch of a safe, edible oil...like coconut or emu oil...seems a better, safer option.

After reading that article on chemicals in everything the general public uses, I CLEARLY should be DEAD!!! I have never heard of using dryer sheets on pets...WTF????....but if something goes into the dryer, it is followed by a dryer sheet! I use a damp dryer sheet to wipe the blades of my ceiling fans down after dusting them....dramatically reduces the frequency of dusting blades....I now only have to do it about every 6-8 months....6 months they are JUST beginning to collect duts, 8 months they MUST be cleaned! But it beats doing it like every 3-4 months! Everything I use from cleaning to washing to......everything!!!....is perfumed! I LOVE perfumed clothes, sheets, towels, etc.....

Agreed, should go in the Library!

I use those blue dryer balls w/little nubs instead of dryer sheets...or you can use tennis balls too.

Good Info

I'm thankful I know! I was going to tell my son who has 2 wonderful Beagles. They have oily coats and with that comes a smell. It just sounded like a great idea. I'm going to make my own solution for them to rub on. Thanks

Would someone clue me in? Why are people wiping their dogs down with dryer sheets? I'd not heard of it before. It's a thought that had never crossed my mind - to rub my dog down with a dryer sheet. What is the thinking behind it? To keep their fur softer or something?

I've read about people who do it to cut down on static electricity when the air is dry, you can get a shock.

yorkietalkjilly 04-03-2015 01:02 PM

Ah, thanks for the answer. Who'd have thought it? Tibbe does shock me sometimes when he come dashing across a throw or blanket in winter but I'd have never thought of that to try to stop it! Glad now that I didn't now that I know they are so foul.

But Tibbe does love to grab the used dryer sheets from the just-dried laundry when one drops on the floor and just takes off flying through the house with it. Wonder if that's bad for him? He then drops them somewhere in the house - and I find it later but it's never chewed or anything.

THe only thing I ever used dryer sheets for was to stuff them in my daughter's smelly karate bag. I put them into her smelly, smelly sparring mitts.
They worked. Anything strong enough to do that is probably bad for pets!

Yikes - sorry for the double post - didn't know it did that. My YT went down with a server error and when it came back up it said wait 25 seconds or something between submitting - but I hadn't yet submitted so I waited and submitted and now I see the one post wound up having gone through before I even clicked on Submit when my YT went down! How did that happen? :confuse2:

Wow, the stuff I read on here amazes me. I wouldn't use puppy wipes or dryer sheets on my animals. Even the "green" stuff is loaded with questionable ingredients.

Nothing I use is perfumed because I can't breathe most of stuff like that and don't want to be on the nebulizer. But I think using the sheets on the fan blades is a very interesting idea. I would never have thought on that! :D
