Please think about this I read story after story about our sick yorkies. It is heart breaking to see them sick and the vet bills that can add up quickly. Then the owners faced with decisions due to money. Please please please think about getting insurance on your pups. I have three girls and all three have coverage. It's really not that expensive. You can pick the deductible and the percentage. If you don't have insurance please go look NOW. Once your baby is sick its just too late. I have Embrace and I have been pleased. There are lots of options available. But do it NOW! |

IMO/IME if you research and find a good breeder insurance isn't needed. Maybe for some. But if something did happen I can pay. |
great advice! My dogs are pretty healthy yet over the years I have had a number of expensive vet visits. I have insurance on the younger two. Good breeders may have dogs that don't have some of the more significant breed issues (like liver shunt) but trust me lots of other breed problems show up in even good breeding and can occur later in life. Just because you have a 6 month or two year old seemingly healthy dog, does not mean that will always be the case. |
Years ago, I didn't really believe in getting insurance, but I sure do now!! I totally agree with this post. I have Healthy Paws insurance on my kiddos. |
This chart has seven companies to help with seeing the differences between plans...... http://files.dvm360.com/alfresco_ima...etInsChart.pdf |
I have an account that is set aside just for the dog's medical. It get's deposits monthly. I also have on hand Care Credit if needed. |
What is the cost of the premiums and the percent they pay of the typical pet insurances? |
So for me ime I've had little dogs or Yorkies for over20yrs. They all lived to an old age . Except one. My first Yorkie. I had ~$2k in Vet bills other then checkups/maintenance. Back then insurance was pretty expensive. So it would have cost more. Now unless its comes down in price I've seen it starting at `$20 month per Dog with a $200yr deductible. 5% off checkups .. So if I got Moki insurance when he was a pup. That would have been $720 outta my pocket so far. To me the value would only be if he was in an accident. But if i take all my other previous dogs I would have spent easily over $10k and not have used it. With the current rates. It maybe good if something happens and you would not be able to cover the cost. Or younger dogs. But as the dog gets older the value of insurance goes down versus premiums paid. Unless it can be had for cheaper? And insurance has gotten better. Wasn't so good when I was in the market. But I will just pay for the Vet. For me its the better option in my mind. JMO |

All Insurance companies are in business to make money. The way they do that is to take in more than they pay out. If i look at all my insurance premiums over the years, on every single policy i've ever had, (car, homeowners, medical, etc) I have paid out more than I have received back. Personally, I would choose to put money aside each month into an account for my dog rather than insure. Fortunately, a few years ago i sold a much bigger, more expensive home and downsized to a tiny home, when both my kids went away to college. I took some cash from that sale and put it into an account for ZoE. It will not only cover her medical bills, but it will also cover her maintenance costs should anything happen to me, and my daughter gets ZoE. I didn't want my kids burdened with the cost of her care, and at that time didn't know how they'd be financially in the future. Fortunately, they both graduated college and have fantastic jobs and could easily afford to care for ZoE, but I still don't feel it's their responsibility to pay for the costs of a dog they didn't choose to have. |

Cathy and I have the same company. When Rosie has tummy issues my vet bill is usually $100-200 alone. None of us can say it won't happen to my dog. Because we just don't know. I keep insurance on my home, car, tractor, etc as a precaution. How is it different keeping it on your pups? I not saying you have to have it. I'm saying its heart breaking to see someone considering putting a pup to sleep because they can't pay the vet bills. It's much easier paying $20 a month for 80-90% coverage then coming up with $5000-10,000 upfront. Just saying. |

I was of the mindset I didn't need insurance because my vet will let me make payments if I had to. But my premium for both of mine is less than 50.00 for accidents and illness and I have the wellness policy also. One visit with jada for a tummy issue was 300.00. I have a 500.00 annual deductible so I may not file. I have embrace which has a vanishing deductible if you don't have to file a claim. It goes down 50.00 a year. I will never have a pet that isn't insured in the future |

Did you know that cancer is the leading cause of death amongst dogs across all breeds? Many cancers (just like in humans) don't show until the dog is over 6yr 8 yrs old. And cancer diagnosis and treatment is expensive. Pet insurance like most else is more expensive here in Canada but for 5-$600 a year a good insurance plan can help alleviate the ever increasing costs of medical treatment. One ACL repair might cost you $4000 or so dollars. And that might not happen until the dog is 5 or 6yrs old or more. So if you paid for 6 yrs $600 you would have expended $3600 that single health concern would see you in the black. And if one ACL goes it is more likely the next knee will do. I have changed my mind about insurance and now have it on my youngest dogs. |
$22 year is a good price. The$1000 for decutable. That would be required for major surgery or accident. Its good for a piece of mind. But for me still not worth the cost. I've always thought about it. But I've had many dogs and never had a problem. Only with one. And if something did happen I'm fortunate enough to have the money for care. Hopefully I will never find out. I'm 49yrs old always had dogs. Never need acl surgery, had one with bad knees nothing. One dog had problems like I said. Other then that. iI I had to spend $4k guess I won't go on vacation that yr. For others is it a piece of mind and money saving good. I will always pay to take care of my dogs. But never had to. This is my reasoning for me. |
The problem for me is who has actually used the insurance. I can find horror stories there also. |
I have insurance on Emma . I think it's worth it. |

For sure ... and like anything else the buyer of insurance needs to research their claims paid history, and consumer reports. I am so glad that you have had healthy dogs so far, but for those of us who have not, have had 4 or more major health issues crop up, which we self funded, you might just have a different viewpoint. Also to consider is your age to retirement, or if you are retired and on a fixed income.... I personally have easily spent over $20,000 on vet care for extraordinary health issues in my dogs. It can add up quickly when you want and do provide for the best of health care..... |
Insurance I sure have used it! Six months after I adopted a rescue at one year old.....I thought perfectly healthy.....he had to have juvenile cataract surgery. Most unexpected. Total cost of the surgery plus extensive aftercare was around $3,800. About a year ago , pancreatitis, again not cheap. I have zero deductible and 90% payout. Monthly premium depends on age, zip code etc, etc. but does not increase with age. He is six now and running into the senior years. Hope he will be ok from how on. I prefer to limit my liability rather than face unexpected vet bills. To each his/ her own though. :) |

If I would have spent alot of $$ for Vet bills then yeah maybe I would see it different. But the plans near me are expensive. Theres the Online insurance but I'm skeptical. How do the dogs get acl tears?? Bad knees I can see from jumping and accidents. I keep my dogs fit never over weight...by much ounces. I think the heavier dogs get the bad knees from jumping and Pancreatitis never experienced that either. But 49yrs old. I grew up with Hound dogs, dog pound dogs ,rescues they all lived a full life. Lost one small dog to a Coyote and one Yorkie from Genetic defect or injury they weren't sure. What are to good insurance co ? If there were inexpensive then I probably would have a different opinion. |

Super fit dog at the Agility center I go to get the tears. The Sumner Agility has National Champion dogs training there. They are a Big Vet facility also. They never did surgery on them. Probably wasn't severe enough.? But Yorkies aren't running like that. Just wondering I've never seen a toy dog get an ACL injury. Everyone is posting like its common? I see more overweight dogs with hip and knee problems. Dunno |
But just because I haven't seen it doesn't mean its not common. Maybe I need to get out more |
