Please think about this

I read story after story about our sick yorkies. It is heart breaking to see them sick and the vet bills that can add up quickly. Then the owners faced with decisions due to money. Please please please think about getting insurance on your pups. I have three girls and all three have coverage. It's really not that expensive. You can pick the deductible and the percentage. If you don't have insurance please go look NOW. Once your baby is sick its just too late. I have Embrace and I have been pleased. There are lots of options available. But do it NOW!

You still have to have the money up front which can still be an issue.

True but at least there will be reimbursement. And if you have a regular vet, some will bill you. Or at least mine will. I still think having it is better than not having it.

IMO/IME if you research and find a good breeder insurance isn't needed. Maybe for some. But if something did happen I can pay.

great advice! My dogs are pretty healthy yet over the years I have had a number of expensive vet visits. I have insurance on the younger two.

Good breeders may have dogs that don't have some of the more significant breed issues (like liver shunt) but trust me lots of other breed problems show up in even good breeding and can occur later in life. Just because you have a 6 month or two year old seemingly healthy dog, does not mean that will always be the case.

Years ago, I didn't really believe in getting insurance, but I sure do now!! I totally agree with this post. I have Healthy Paws insurance on my kiddos.

I have an account that is set aside just for the dog's medical. It get's deposits monthly. I also have on hand Care Credit if needed.

ironmike86 03-07-2015 07:41 AM

What is the cost of the premiums and the percent they pay of the typical pet insurances?

ironmike86 03-07-2015 08:14 AM

So for me ime I've had little dogs or Yorkies for over20yrs. They all lived to an old age . Except one. My first Yorkie. I had ~$2k in Vet bills other then checkups/maintenance. Back then insurance was pretty expensive. So it would have cost more. Now unless its comes down in price I've seen it starting at `$20 month per Dog with a $200yr deductible. 5% off checkups .. So if I got Moki insurance when he was a pup. That would have been $720 outta my pocket so far. To me the value would only be if he was in an accident. But if i take all my other previous dogs I would have spent easily over $10k and not have used it. With the current rates. It maybe good if something happens and you would not be able to cover the cost. Or younger dogs. But as the dog gets older the value of insurance goes down versus premiums paid. Unless it can be had for cheaper? And insurance has gotten better. Wasn't so good when I was in the market. But I will just pay for the Vet. For me its the better option in my mind. JMO

I was the same way and was against insurance but with the newer pacjages, I decided it was worth it.. My dog winston is almost 4. His premium is $122/yr for $10,000 annual coverage with a $1,000 deductible. I also purchased a wellness package that gives me $100 extra for wellness spending. So when I take the $100 and offset the cost of the premium, I'm paying basically $22 a year. Even if they premium goes up the every year by 15%, I still will definitely cash out if he does get ill. And I disagree about the value of insurance going down with age - it goes down with pre-existing conditions not age. I just added my 14.5 year old to my policy, and one new issue will make it worthwhile. I asked for a medical underwriting to see what was excluded and there are still any number of possibilities that could occur to make it worthwhile. I've had weird things happen to my dogs. Hey if I lose out on the older one, it's basically not losing more than a night out at a moderately priced restaurant for dinner.

I hold the same view.

All Insurance companies are in business to make money. The way they do that is to take in more than they pay out. If i look at all my insurance premiums over the years, on every single policy i've ever had, (car, homeowners, medical, etc) I have paid out more than I have received back.

Personally, I would choose to put money aside each month into an account for my dog rather than insure. Fortunately, a few years ago i sold a much bigger, more expensive home and downsized to a tiny home, when both my kids went away to college. I took some cash from that sale and put it into an account for ZoE. It will not only cover her medical bills, but it will also cover her maintenance costs should anything happen to me, and my daughter gets ZoE. I didn't want my kids burdened with the cost of her care, and at that time didn't know how they'd be financially in the future. Fortunately, they both graduated college and have fantastic jobs and could easily afford to care for ZoE, but I still don't feel it's their responsibility to pay for the costs of a dog they didn't choose to have.

Even when dogs come from amazing breeders there can still be health issues that pop up and accidents happen. There is one that also covers routine care.

I keep an account too. I don't have Care Credit but so have a credit card if I need it. I decided to go ahead and add the insurance when I brought Lily into the family.

Cathy and I have the same company. When Rosie has tummy issues my vet bill is usually $100-200 alone. None of us can say it won't happen to my dog. Because we just don't know. I keep insurance on my home, car, tractor, etc as a precaution. How is it different keeping it on your pups? I not saying you have to have it. I'm saying its heart breaking to see someone considering putting a pup to sleep because they can't pay the vet bills. It's much easier paying $20 a month for 80-90% coverage then coming up with $5000-10,000 upfront. Just saying.
