Some People Need To Be Ashamed! A friend of mine called me this morning saying she saw an ad for yorkie puppies and asked me to stop by with her(safety in nunbers!). So she could check the breeder out. Since I'm a SAHM and wasn't busy today I didn't mind. Went to the woman's home. She was friendly and my friend looked at the pups(couldnt touch because they'd only had one shot). One pup caught my eye so I grilled the woman. She let's them leave at 12 weeks (whew!) Are AKC registered (a plus but registration is only as good as the breeeder imo) Had both parents(saw them) Has a guarantee(I'll get to that) She was selling the below "gold dust" male for $800 (a bargain!). With ONLY A 24 HOUR HEALTH GUARANTEE!. When I asked why she stated because she's never had problems with her lines regarding LP and liver shunt. Plus since most of her customers are military they have fast and easy access to healthcare:rolleyes:. So I guess the woman thought she "had me" since he's a cutie. I asked to see the parents. The mama was beautiful but the dad looked ill bred (I'm picky, I want BOTH parents to be beautiful). The woman also mentioned that she had a girl that a soldier who was deploying surrendered to her and she bred her  and admitted the female was completely out of standard. None of her dogs had the yorkie spirit I've come to love! All of them were placid and tired looking! So needless to say while my friend was oohing and ahhing I sent her "the look" that says "let's get the hell outta here!". So she left without a deposit placed. I hope the puppy cuteness won't cloud her brain and cause her to get a cute but genetically screwed pet. I will try to resize the pic of the male puppy. I wanted to get him just to "save" him and place him with my mother but I'd hate to break my mother's heart if he had a congenital defect. |

All puppies are cute but I think you know that purebred dogs are a genetic creation that came about by very selective breeding. Only continued selective breeding will keep the purebred looking and acting like the breed was intended to look and act. When people like this woman get their hands on the species that is when big problems occur. She knows little about their pedigrees or about the line breeding that needs to be selectively done in order to avoid genetic deficiencies or defects. You might want to advise your friend to contact a local AKC sanctioned dog club to get advice about reputable breeders in your state or a near by state. https://www.apps.akc.org//apps/clubs...onf&display=on She can search for a conformation club or hopefully there may be a breed specialty club available to give guidance. There is so much that goes into producing good quality purebred pups that it is just not advisable to buy from "hobby" breeders trying to make some extra income on the backs of these poor animals. Most show/breeders have pet pups available and reasonably priced. If she has to get on a waiting list it will be well worth her while to do a little waiting and get a pup that actually looks and acts as a Yorkie should with an honest health guarantee. |

Your friend is not uncommon in her rush but often they end up here asking the familiar question "Is my puppy really a purebred Yorkie?" or they have a myriad of health or behavioral issues they are dealing with. The extra time and money of buying from a real professional could save a lot of money that will be spent on vet bills as well as the heartbreak that comes with buying from a disreputable breeder. |
This is the kennel I was referring to |
I can't attach the correct link but it's Exquisite Yorkshire Terrier Golddust |
That's why it is always better to buy the breeder then the pup and look at and ask the breeder questions before even looking at the pups because all pups are cute. |
One of the cutest dogs I ever saw on this earth, immediately fell in love with at first sight and bought and brought home that night was diagnosed the next day with such severe hydrocephalus that the vet gave her only hours to live. But cute - tiny little "Twinkie" sure filled the bill on that score. |
Cute pup, looks exactly like my Kayla and Karlee that have a Maltese mom and Yorkie dad. Obviously mine are a mix, but totally healthy at 6 yrs old. |
Unfortunately, there are many breeders who only see dollar signs. I am no expert in this field and I will be paying a couple grand for a surgery tomorrow because we bought Sasha from one of those breeders. Now, I would not give Sasha up for a million dollars, but it irks me that these people churn out the litters as fast as the females will allow with only one thing in mind - $$$. I have been told that the person we bought from sold the mom Yorkie and is now breeding another breed. How can you just up and sell a dog that you have had for 6 years??? That tells me what type of person she is. Listen to the people on this board who have the knowledge (I know I will). In the short time I have been with YT I can see that the people here really love their dogs and only want what is best for them. |
U want to find the best breeder you can. Because if you buy an unhealthy dog you can spend all your $$ trying to help them and it may still not help. You will be left with a broken heart an you are supporting a bad breeder jme |
