I feel so guilty.... Molly is having her dental today. This morning she was so excited because she was going for a ride. I looked over at her on the drive to the vet and I swear she was smiling because she was so happy to be in the car going for a ride. We get to the vet's office and go inside and she is fine. I am holding her while I fill out her paperwork and she is fine. The vet tech takes her from me and puts a little tag on her harness with her name and why she is there and she is fine. The vet tech asked if she could put Molly behind the reception desk that is enclosed so she could watch people coming in instead of being put in a cage and I thought it sounded like a good idea. When she put Molly down, she ran to a corner and peed and curled up into a terrified ball. I thought she might do better if I left so I walked out. I was so mad at myself driving home.....how could I have left her like that knowing she was so scared that she peed?? If I call them to ask how she is, I know they will tell me she is fine.... but I feel terrible. I can't get her little curled up body out of my mind. Did I do the right thing by leaving? What would you do? |
It is so hard to leave them when they are like that. The Vet Tech's know she is scared and will take care of her. Just think of how happy she will be to see you when you pick her up and give her a nice treat! |
Awww, your precious little one will be okay, and she won't remember being scared...she'll just be happy when she sees you and she'll feel your love. You did the right thing, and I'm sure the employees soothed her and made her feel better in no time, they're animal lovers...so try not to worry. They affect us so very much, so I do know exactly what you mean / how you feel about being so deeply affected. Let us know how everything goes today! :) |
Molly I know how you feel. My boy loves going in the car and I hate it when the end result is the vet or groomers, whom he does not enjoy! He shakes and looks so pitiful, but usually perks up when someone there picks him up. Of course you should have left her there, she will be fine when a tech picks her up as my dog was. Soon she will be sedated and before she knows it, it will all be over and she will be back home:) Hoping all goes well and she is happy again soon. |
Thank you everyone for reassuring me I did the right thing. I am sitting her with tears in my eyes because I can't get her little curled up body out of my mind. She is really good when we go to the vet's office and doesn't even react when she gets a shot. She is always such a happy little girl. It just surprised me she acted the way she did. |
I know how you feel. Last week Dutch had a vet appointment and a groomer's appointment. Both times she was excited because she was going outside. That's all that matter. You should of seen the look on her face. "You tricked me, you didn't anything about going to no vet or groomers." |

Poor baby but dogs are just like children and sometimes they have to be turned over to the professionals to help them, even when they are scared. The vets and their clinic workers are all doglovers and will be sure to try to make her stay there as loving and easy as is possible. Many are experts at knowing how to settle a dog. And don't worry, she'll forget any nerves just as soon as she sees you are there to take her home again. Your dog having all her teeth and gums healthy, pain/infection free, for chewing and enjoying her food and chewtoys, tugowar, protection from predators, etc., will be your repayment for the guilt you feel. Still, we all leave the vets feeling a little guilty and scared when our baby is going to be anesthetized for any procedure and it never gets easier year after year. |
Guilt.... When my parents and I have to leave the house for few hours, my parents RUSH out the door so they don't have to see Magnu/Zoey's face. But during the car ride, my parents mention how guilty they feel leaving them alone... I feel the same guilt too whenever I have to leave them at the vet or even the daycare... But.. like Yorkietalkjilly says, it's got to be done sometimes and it's for their own good. |
10 years ago I took my little Schnauzer to the U of IL because she had a heart condition. They put a pacemaker in her and we went home. A year later she had to have the battery replaced so I took her the night before and still remember her at the end of the leash that the vet was holding. She was stretching and pulling trying to get to me and I turned and walked away. She passed away on the operating table the next day when they were replacing her battery. That is why I felt so bad seeing Molly acting the way she did. On a happier note, Molly is done and did great. I get to pick her up in an hour. |
I can just see you cuddling/kissing her for hours!!!! It'll be like you taking her as a love hostage. LOL I absolutely LOVE the picture on your avatar. :D |

Hope all goes well and is soon forgotten. I know it is stressful. I am dreading upcoming dentals too; Karlee and Kayla both on March 12 then Tiki on the 19th. It is first time for all 3 and I will be a wreck just like you. |
