How cold is too cold? I bundle Moxie up in a sweater, a light coat, and a heavy coat but it is freezing and windy and too dirty/ muddy for leg warmers so her back legs and some of her underside and face are exposed. It is freezing and windy in NYC. How cold is too cold? |
Well it's never too cold to go potty outside cuz well... he has to! lol. But for walks and outdoor playtime?? I don't do super cold winds, etc, I hate it and it's not worth it. But if it's sunny and in at least the 20's (F), it's doable for us. |
Callie goes outside potty in all weather hurricanes to snow and ice storms. She has learned to go quick. |

HI, I am formally from NY, the Bronx, I had 3 yorkies, all house broken, all types of weather & temps they had to be walked. If she's not house broken and uses pee pads I wouldn't venture outdoors for exercise under 30 degrees & high winds. You also have to be careful of salt on streets and sidewalks, if you do take her out bathe her paws with warm water when you return home to get any salt off that may be on her paws. You can play roll the ball, play hide a treat and let her search for it even in a tiny apartment for some exercise. They are calling for frigid weather for the next several days, it's ok if she misses long walks for a few days. You can try a short walk, see how she does, if you see she is to cold pick her up and carry her home. |
How cold is too cold, at 6:00 AM this morning it was 1 degree here in Stow, Ohio, no Yorkie or other tiny breeds should be out in this........unless they know how to go and run in fast.:D |
6AM here on the mountain temp was 2 degrees, Cody ran out did his business and came flying back in. Winds gusting 25 to 55MPH wind chill could be as low as -25, no outside play, only potty and back in. |

My three have always been trained to go outside to do their business through snow, sleet, rain...whatever. They do have a roof "overhang" on the den's south porch that protects them from the elements. I have NEVER used wee wee pads for any of my fur babies until recently. Prissy, our precious, soon-to-be 14 year toy poodle has been looking so sad here lately when she has to go outside "for business" when it is cold or raining that she just breaks my heart. So, off to the store I went a few weeks ago and bought 6 washable wee wee pads for the comfort of our precious senior girl, who became a huge part of our family at 8 weeks old. I placed a wee wee pad down in the den for her for the days when the weather wasn't up to her standards. I had no idea if Prissy would use this or not since she had always been trained to 'go outside'. Well, to my surprise.....not only does Prissy use the pads, but on cold and raining days they all three use them and not one of them were trained to do this. I was shocked and thrilled at the same time!!! It is so nice on those miserable days that they don't have to get wet or miserably cold. |
From the get go our lilah has used potty pads and I really couldn't be happier with them. You hear that Yorkshire terriers are very difficult to train and I know some folks are very successful devout outdoor potty training families but for us, I really feel like giving lilah a safe indoor space that is acceptable to potty has created a lot of the success that we have. We don't have the canadian chill where I am but car doors rip of their hinges regularly in our wind storms! and I seriously celebrate the potty pad. |
When it is "cold" here in Houston, (and that is NO WHERE NEAR 1*!!!!) and wet and windy, mine will run to the back door, and when I open the door for everyone to go outside, they get a faceful of that weather, tiny butts hit the ground, and everyone looks up at me like, "So do YOU go out there and squat in that weather to pee???? well, neither do we!!!!!" I LOVE pee pads!! |
Is there a certain brand of pee pads you use? I am having a hard time in the potty training area and right now am putting preemie diapers with the tail cut out for my Spicey at night and during the day take her out every 30 mi to an hour and she doesnt do anything , she just sits and looks at me as if to say " come on mom take me in". So we are doing alot of diapers at this time. I could sure use some advice . |
hi- I am in long island-brrrrr. are you crate training? how old is your pup? |
Well it depends on how old and how much your dog weights .i i live in NY. Galen is 3.5 lbs. and for him it is way too cold for him to go out in our weather. But that is just me |

I hear Boston is getting another blizzard.:thumbdown Those poor people. |
We use too paw- I think it's a petsmart brand? We have tried several and some were just a laugh in how poor the quality was! I also like the brand...I think try are literally called wee wee pads? They are distributed by central pet. Also I wanted to mention that thy make sorts to apply to the potty area that encourage dogs to go potty were the spray has been applied- those could be very useful. |
Again thank you , I will look up the spray and purchase it. |
There's a severe cold warning right now where we live..minus 35-40 Celsius. Pao and I just stay in and chill. We play ball, wrestle a little (gently) or have a play date with one of his friends. He's 9 years old btw. We did walk him every day when he is younger though but the sidewalks are slippery, his legs hurt from the salt-its just not worth it. He does still go to the backyard for his businesses. I just shovel a path and an area for him. I do put him in 2 layers of jacket each time he goes. |
We're having record breaking high temperatures in Sparks, but thought the below quote appropriate....! Amount of time it takes for a dog to "do its business" is directly proportional to outside temperature + suitability of owner's outerwear. ~Betsy Caņas Garmon |
Yeah, I think you're wise to be cautious. More than just the cold is the change from normal. Your pups likely seldom see temperatures that low and their bodies can't adjust to the shock that quickly. Mine have seen it all their lives and they gradually get used to it as the season changes each year. Still, we were a coat at 30, coat and booties at 20 and stop outdoor walks altogether at -5. |
Wind chill advisory here in Michigan with temps -20. When they keep flashing warnings across the bottom of the telly stating frostbite will occur in ten minutes, ZoE isnt going outside at all! It's just too darn cold! |
I took Moxie out earlier for a quick walk w/ her sweater, light coat, and park when it was 25 and sunny but it's now dark and 8 degrees, much lower w/ windchill. So I am thinking no night walk, unless it is literally to the end of the next block to the 24hr grocer (and she can run around in there, lol) or just a circle around the yard. I saw two yorkies being walked earlier today, one with NO coat or anything and another with only a light sweater. And a pug with nothing on, either. What is wrong with people? :( Prayers to all the animals with no one keeping them safe and warm. |
