How much to you Feed Your 10 Pound Yorkie I took Sammie to the vet today and she thinks the peeing on the couch is most likely behavioral becasue when he wakes up he is not all wet. He does not smell like pee either so she thinks he is meaning to pee on the couch. So back to sleeping in the kitchen for him. Waiting for urine tests results to come back to rule out UTI. She thinks the little hack noise he makes daily is due to a sensative trachea. She also said he was over weight by a pound. How much dry do you feed your yorkie. I was giving him 1/4 dry in the morning and 1/4 in the afternoon and then 1/4 in the evening. Is that too much? I spread it out because he gets the yellow bile if I don't. Thanks |
2 Attachment(s) I feed my 18lb active Jackson 1/2 cup per day total. So 1/4 in AM, 1/4 in PM. But he also gets some wet food mixed in as well as some treats. He usually gets a Dentastix every night, or a few times a week some kind of chew (bully stick, purina chewz, etc) plus he gets treats. So I try to account for any extra calories. He's kept in pretty good shape but admittely, this winter we've been pretty lazy thus far and I think he's looking a tad heavier (to me), he could probably lose 1/2lb honestly. This is how I usually keep him, and that's eating ^ that amount up there. Every dog is different though and has a different metabolism. Personally I think 3/4 cup may be too much, if he's not all that active and vet says he could lose a few. |
I agree with Brittany that you have to take into account a dog's activity level and metabolism. Also depends on what foods you feed. Some kibble brands are more nutrient dense/more calories per cup. For instance, when Max ate Orijen, a very dense kibble, he got a lot less of it than the Fromm he eats now. There is over a 100 calorie per cup difference between the two. |
Well mine should be getting 1/2 a cup a day.... but he ends up getting that along with whatever falls from the highchair and since my daughter thinks you should only eat Goldfish heads he gets their tails if I am not watching... he was 16Lbs but I am sure to even know what he weight at the moment. |
Bentley gets about 1/4 cup in the morning and another at about 4pm. Noontime he gets a treat and at 7pm another treat. He weighs about 11 lbs. I'd like him to lose a pound or so. |
Bogey is 10.3 lbs and get just under 1/4 c twice a day. Doodlebug is a little larger and gets a full 1/4 cup and Pebbles is just a little too thin so I've been giving her a little fuller 1/4 of food. |
do you have to regulate the amount of food i have a 10 week old yorkie i have had rat terrier all my life i just kept food out for them all the time. |
Boy i think im feeding my boo to much. But hes 10 months weighs 8 lbs. but had a collar and sweater on. |

Teddy is right at 10 pounds and gets around 1/2 cup of most foods (depending on cals/cup) daily. We break this up over 3-4 feedings because our other pup gets an upset stomach if we go too long between feedings. Anymore food each day would make Ted a chunky pup, especially this time of year when we aren't outside as much. |

I think it depends on the dog. I can not leave food out for sammie he would eat the whole thing in one sitting. He is a piggy. You have to be careful they don't get overweight because it causes health problems with them my vet told me. |
Cody is 3 y/o @ 12.6 lbs. I feed him 1/3 cup dry food @ 7AM, at 12noon he gets 1/2 of a cooked carrot, 5PM 1/3 cup of dry food, 9PM 1/2 of a cooked carrot, between 7PM and 10PM he get one little treat for doing his "roll over" trick. I would like to see him at 12 lbs, vet says noooo, he's good at this weight. By end of winter I expect him to weigh a bit more as our activity is very low, no back yard runs due to ice. I agree with Brister & maximo very dogs metabolism is different, and exercise is very important. |
I think what I was doing was feeding him like I feed my shih tzu but I have to remember my shih tzu was 22 pounds. It is just when I see 1/3 of a cup it looks so small like it would'nt even fill him!! But the vet said they have small stomachs and it does fill them. She said a dog will eat till it throws up if you let him! |
And your vet is correct on that. Also remember the kibbles are small when dry, when it's mixed with liquid it expands, once it gets into their stomachs the dry mixes with stomach fluids and food expands. Always make sure there is always water for them. Did your vet suggest how much dry food Sammie should eat daily. |
